Giethoorn Village in Netherlands has no roads or any modern transportation at all, only canals. Well, and 176 bridges too. Tourists have to leave their cars outside of the village and travel here by foot or boat by.
NiggikamEnkiA
Nice dog face house

You'd be begging to leave when enough of the ice caps melt
kakivara
Nice, nothing but the lovely sounds and smells of 2-stroke outboard motors.
ManRammer
This comment was way waaay too far down. As someone who grew up with all sorts of small boats, I would not want to hear that 24/7.
hully1977
Now show the pictures of the canals with traffic jams of boats of all the tourists that are coming, driving the citizens crazy
Captainplanetmotherfucker
#10 Can anyone else see the happy dog?
Lordofthenopes
Looool that place is gonna be underwater in like 3 years
Zmokahontas
@FrozenFoodGuy is.. this where you live?!
FrozenFoodGuy
Nope, but i’ve been there! One of the most unique places in the Netherlands and beyond beautiful!
jesasterous
So what do they do in the transition time before the water freezes all of the way?
Mercurybird
Hmm, you’re right. Using the boats would keep it broken up. I guess it could freeze overnight... Dunno, guessing.
KawaiiTwat
How about ya'll just pull up google map and have a look... This have been reposted so many times and its NOT CORRECT INFORMATION.
fartsaladsandwich
So many sharks tho
PixieOnAPolarBear
Imagine trying to get home after a night of drinking... do they have water taxis?
BoogalooBadger
I bet thermal seawater expansion is a dirty phrase in those parts.
ThisIsSteel
Ok but where's the Walmart? I trust nothing anymore after seeing how close the pyramids are to civilization
Usnuss
My blood pressure just went down watching these pics.
dennisprager
imagine American graffiti but with small boats
knifeskills
Beautiful
Martinikene
A place where kids either learn how to swim or the parents have to have sex again
arumunus
Its gorgeous but my fat ass absolutely can not step out of a boat with any semblance of dignity. Even the ducks fucking laugh at me.
Sheirynn
we have a place near where I live where you walk, bike or use a horse to get around. No motorized vehicles either. it's on an island.
wolveten12
Sounds awesome, until you have to lug your groceries or furniture by canoe!
HotelB
I mean you could use a canoe. Or you could use the roads that all the properties have access to.
Hybris51129
Then you just get some mil-surp amphibious vehicle and charge your neighbors for your services and profit.
Euchre
I'm sure they have delivery boats/barges, with cranes or such. One little red wagon, and bank to house is trivial.
Hybris51129
Yeah but what can be better than showing up your neighbors in a old Soviet BMP-1?
Cheomesh
I spent many years hauling groceries/etc several miles on foot so I'm set there.
tomatoboy
Story time?
Cheomesh
Poverty. End of story.
FailedCrate
"No modern transportation" - they have boats. How's that not modern?!
heffalumpisbetterthannone
Oh come now, even Noah had an ark.
QuarterlyQuarterlyQuarterly
How recent do you think the invention of the canoe is?
nameisunavailable
Looks like a lot of the boats have engines strapped to them ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
NotACanadian
At least 3
svoka
Sorry, but I can imagine this getting old really fast.
Periodmoustache
Laaaaaaazy
cheesecake7
Great for AirBnB stays tho
scottad
You have to have a bit of a passion for it. Like living in Alaska, or eating licorice.
svoka
Haaaa! Hahaha
macthelost
Came to say this
wheredidwegonow
Damn. You get off early
ShiaIabeouf
Giethoorn one of the most overrated villages on the netherlands. One long canal, lots of Chinese and just one bar. photography heaven thoug
limenode
That... sounds like a nightmare.
chrisAppCat
Been there, has been ruined by tourism
RevolverFirelot
...I want to live there.
BoooBerry
The mosquitoes.
ArgonSpark
You think that until you have to paddle your ass to work every day.
woodchucks
Think of the mosquitoes though
roadhunter
I live in a dry area of Oklahoma, and we're plagued with them. I'd rather live somewhere pretty like this and get bitten.
Orcus424
In Florida the local counties spray for them.
aparticularlybadassusername
Ha-hey! Whaddup Oklahomie!
Orcus424
You spray for them. In Florida there is Mosquito Control which is an elected position for the county.
trishsweetpeach1971
Isn’t mosquito spray banned bc it’s toxic
Orcus424
Certain kinds are but not all of them.
TheLatePhilipJFry
Wouldn't it be too cold for them?
Xoulish
There's a few in the summer but not really a thing here do much.
roadhunter
Absolutley not. Mosquitoes thrive in northern latitudes. Canada and Alaska are full of them.
etcnotect
Not only that, but they get bigger the further north you go
2fligh2high
Get ready for hordes of predominantly Chinese tourists to come and visit and sometimes buy the property next to you...
whereamigoing
2tru.
VIIVIIIIX
So, every major American city?
diepvries
Grocery shopping by boat too
Loren25
Ha that's funny. They're building a spa-hotel thing mainly just for chinese ppl in my town in the netherlands
2graves
You don't want that lol
Cadoden
they bought the house above us and its a living hell, those fuckers throw bear cans and siggaret buts on our fake gras garden
Cadoden
i fill the bear cans with water and throw them back up
limenode
I'm not Dutch, but the stuff they do here in the US is often borderline insane.
ilovecake
IMO they’re dirty. Spitting everywhere and littering. It’s absolutely nuts how little they give a shit.
QueenofQueensVillains
The spitting makes me crazy. They cough up loudly from their throat and spit and i have seen men and women do this, young and old
pareidoliaperson
Anyone else see that?
REDS1X
the force is strong with that house
NotACanadian
I just see Darth Vader.
pareidoliaperson
Really? I see a dog as if he heard a dirty joke.
ImRelevantToo
I want to be where the people are...
Tinkabugs
I want to see, want to see them rowing...
R2D2ismyhomeboy
I want you to live there so you can invite me to visit. This place looks straight magical
Edcellent
Well, they say Venice is nice too; they call it the Giethoorn of the south.
trishsweetpeach1971
Too many tourists and no one from Italy lives in Venice
Kyllan82
No you don't. The tourists treat the entire town, including your house and garden, like an open air museum.
xanius
Fucking dibs on binnenpaden 44. 7 room 2.5 bath on 3.5km sq for 739k euro. That's a square mile of land.
TheCircleLurker
Wonder why it comes with all that land, looks like plenty of lots for other homes
xanius
It was built in 1947. Probably used to be a farm and the plot hasn't been split by any of the owners.
Bmxtucker
Think of all the bugs tho
aleszisme
i live in the netherlands and i want to live there

CreepyPhlox
Did you not see the frozen canals?
butIdontownasuitJudith
Me too. Can I take my jet-ski?
roadhunter
You can't afford to.
GothamPrincess
Me too. How
frankthetank24
And leave the greatest state there is?
usersubbordercontrol
I've always wanted to live in a city that had aqueducts, just for boats, and like water transport. Would be really useful
SpecialAgentPinkfinger
You said my thoughts before I made it to the comments.
DVRKPVSSENGER
I want to go to there
REDS1X
In the darth vader house?
BeeWoman
Fun fact: My friend is living in Giethoorn, and he is always complaining about tourists that assume his backyard is some kind of place to 1/
NotACanadian
This is why the Americans have guns.
thatguyfromny
Two words: Lawn sprinklers
SmileAndTheWorldSmilesWithYou
Curious if it is predominantly Chinese tourists. Just put up a Taiwanese flag and a sign saying we recognize Taiwan. Problem Solved.
sporkazm
Lol I considered putting up a Palestine flag when my bitchy neighbor flew the Israeli flag.
IAmWAYTooOldForThisShite
Just spotted the Yasser Arafat in the crowd.
BeeWoman
chill out and have lunch, so they just step out of their boat, onto his or his neighbour's yard, and they relax(of course, unwelcomely...)2/
Sheirynn
blame advertising. they make it look like a park. kind of like those old time parks of the horse and buggy days where you walk in the past
barkiGemCat
Like Venezia, Italia and some towns in Japan, some near Lake Biwa. Venezia has problems, though: environmental & social. Popular!!
LennyNero
God, it must absolutely suck if you have to replace a bed or appliances; or have to do large repairs; or anything not immediately "canoable"
SickSith77
Lots of these lots have a road at the back end actually
whatarenamesanyway
Don't agree, +1 for canoable though
DawnCosmos24
Bridges everywhere
barkiGemCat
I never had my own bed. A few futon. Now, and from now on, only stack of Colourful Quilts from India. Repairs? Only a leaking roof.
dereklarsen
It's called a barge.
RunsNakedThroughSwamps
Because it barges into your house
YourMomSaysYouNeedToGoToBed
That’s called the Koolaid Man.
RunsNakedThroughSwamps
Do I really have to go to bed right now?
drfarren
After this run
sololander
Bru almost everywhere you order or buy has free shipping nowadays...
bunchfumbling
The 'no modern transportation' is exaggerated. I'm pretty sure all houses can be reached by car (i've been there when I was a kid) (1/2)
bunchfumbling
from the back of the house. The front of the houses are at the waterside so it only seems as if that's the only way to reach them.
bunchfumbling
OK maybe not all buildings (just checked google maps) but there definitely ARE roads in the town :P
Trentski
They’re just float you a loaner from the local rental shop: Can-Doable
AbusedPickle
not all boats are single seaters. the most efficient way to move heavy things is still to put them on water,
scarfoot
The easiest way to move things is with powered machinery.
AbusedPickle
i didn't say easy, I said efficient. in a town like this, though, a cargoship probably wouldn't be very practical.
AbusedPickle
not too mention offloading and onloading is probably the most akward part
Periodmoustache
Many large items are transported across water.
FatBastardVegetarian
This is how words are created.
AtomicOldMan
Biggest concern for me would be emergency services.
kubi
Helicopters?
fireballz3
Speed boat
hotroddadbod
Have you not ever played with a lego police boat
AtomicOldMan
We were a Duplo house, thank you very much.
frickandfrack
I'll bet have an entire system of "utility" boats, probably even easier to use bc its level to the ground, not up on a truck.
MelcToxic
Venice has this all figured out. Freight boats, garbage boats, ambulance boats etc
Tikityler
176 Bridges + utility boats + anything tall and wide != easy.
BertramWilberforceWooster
No different to the Muskoka's in Canada I guess. A boat based economy.
SnoweyTurtle
Are you from Muskoka?
BertramWilberforceWooster
Close by and a regular visitor
bicuriositykilledthiscat
What? I lived in Muskoka. I don’t remember anything like this??
SnoweyTurtle
Speaking from experience carrying anything heavy out of a boat is so hard. Getting a fridge out of a boat and onto the dock took 5 people.
LarvaLamp
I would not want to lift an appliance out of a small wooden boat.
Obsidianpick9999
You could probably fit a narrow boat or something similar through the canals. They are really stable and can carry quite a bit.
Euchre
You can put a crane on a boat, you know. That's how a lot of smaller freigthers did, and still do get crates onboard in primitive ports.
Tikityler
176 bridges.
Euchre
Those are walk bridges, and not going to be big or strong enough to carry a vehicle with a load 8 feet wide, like a load of lumber.
AdmJota
Then don't use a small wooden one.
houtaku
Good call.
JonSnowy
I’ve found my dream home.
REDS1X
the darth vader house?
JonSnowy
#10 the doggo house
Sergio1d
Is there mosquitoes there? Because that would probably be my biggest complaint
Undrave
Mosquitoes require perfectly still water, not moving water. Though I bet it stinks...
n0n53n53
*are there
DisgruntledFerret
Mosquitoes don't deserve proper grammar.
Sergio1d
They deserve hell!
RedbullWithoutACause
Even their grammar sucks
Letsel
It’s Holland. There are only mosquitos in the summer months, rest of the year is too cold :).
Ezzybells
That doesn't make it ok. lol
KingOfCitrus
A little like Alberta. In the summer you only really run into 5, maybe 10 mosquitoes if you're unlucky.
Cherrygin
Where do you live in Alberta? Cause every summer I get eaten alive.
KingOfCitrus
The prairie parts, nowhere near a lake.
tiredviking
I just imagine a few kids dying every year from falling through thin ice..
themostirreleventnameintheworld
Darwin shows no mercy
AntaNce
How long has it been since it froze like that?
anxiouschef
Lol
scuba7jb
OMGNoWayy
Still gotta be less than the kids that die in car accidents
wander01
and school shootings... -.-
IAmWAYTooOldForThisShite
*fewer
OMGNoWayy
I also probably should have started it with "It". Oh, and "gotta" probably should be "has to". Oh, and don't forget the period at the end.
IAmWAYTooOldForThisShite
No, those are all fine. Just the less/fewer thing hits a nerve, is all. +1 for owning it (unless that response was pure sarcasm).
suckerforcutedoggoimg
It's the Netherlands. Ice only gets thin for 3 months then is back to 3 ft thick.
Dikhoofd
What?
suckerforcutedoggoimg
It's a bad joke about how cold it gets in the Netherlands.
mentalpiggie
Doesn't get that cold tbh
moshthun
Ik vat 'm ook niet. Mooi hoofd, trouwens.
BunniesMummy
A moose once bit my sister...
bicuriositykilledthiscat
Google translate says this is “I do not understand either. Nice head, by the way.” How off is this???
moshthun
It's perfect!
maisoncdn
bolobass
None.
Snodave
Darwinism is a thing.
whoisyourdaddy
They are likely smarter than you are.
GhostOfSidHartman
Maybe not that deep?
helloimjenni
I have a fear of water and would imagine my kid drowning so I wouldn’t not live here ever
NordicusMaximus
Those canals aren’t very deep, so they freeze pretty solid within a few days.
EwGrooss
But what do you do when the river is frozen, but not enough to hold the weight of a person?
estcstbi10
In rural Canada, our parents taught us about our environment. I at least had some understanding of waterways, wildlife, roads, real early
Euchre
You mean like anywhere water ices over every winter? Minnesota anyone?
MrPhuckett
Or just young kids accidentally falling in ?
amareis
Doesn't apply outside America.
aCartographer
Can't decide which to sue, the ice or the water
rijstewafels
We all know how to skate and how to swim
HappySweet
What about snakes? Seems like to would have a lot of snakes.
Chloesaurus
Swimming doesn't do you much good when you fall through thin ice. Getting out of the water fast and preventing hypothermia is the problem.
IAmWAYTooOldForThisShite
Getting out of the water fast and preventing hypothermia is the SOLUTION.
Chloesaurus
That's probably worded better lol
TheCeilingIsLava
Those skills won't save you if the water is flowing under the ice.
MaximusTerror
In the netherlands? HA!
AliBarber
Does it look much like the water is flowing there?
ManufacturedMannequin
It’s cascading
huntingsamsquantches
There is literally 0% cascading or, for that matter, anything close to the looks of current. The only churning we see is from a motor or oar
dparsons4205772
That's the first thing I thought. As a new father, fuuuuuck that
DanielRadcliffesDeliciousAsshole1
What’s it like being a new father I got one on the way?
dparsons4205772
Well Mr. DeliciousAss, not to be all mushy with ya but it's the greatest love you will ever feel. He's crying his ass off right but worth it
DanielRadcliffesDeliciousAsshole1
I’m tucking terrified
DanielRadcliffesDeliciousAsshole1
*fucking
dparsons4205772
Good! That means you care. You got this!!
