I add "-ai" to almost every search I make on any search engine. I forget occasionally, but remember most of the time. I'd like to think I'm helping in some way...but I don't know if it actually disables ai for the search, or just disables me seeing the results that were generated anyway.

I genuinely hate AI. However, it is exceptionally good at advanced mathematics. Take a snip of the problem, and paste into image search. Google provides a step by step on how to solve. My calc 3 professor has been utterly useless all semester. If I didn't have that tool I'd be failing.

I mean its been incredible in giving me recipes for dinner using ingredients I have on hand and then keeps a log for next time. Its been the best cook book ive ever had. It also finds me the lowest price on an item im shopping for in seconds. Saving me a crap ton of time researching that. It even found an item I was looking for in a local yeard sale.
Most people dont know how to use it to yield the best answers. Ask it broad, non specific questions and thats the kind of answer you're gonna get

I have. I admit, it was fun for a bit but I am, alas, cursed with critical thinking skills and it began to feel really really off. Have you ever seen a film called The Stuff? In a weird way it reminded me of that. I stopped using it because it felt too friendly. I couldn’t do anything wrong and although I thought I was learning, something was missing. I wasn’t being corrected. I’ve gone back to other means to search and learn. It’s worrying it’s so popular.

I have found that the answers are only as good as the question being asked of it. You have to tell it where you want it to source the information from, and give it specific parameters. Its amazingly useful for mundane things. Found me the best interest rate to open a hysa in seconds. When I shopping for something I can source the store with the lowest price in seconds. I ask it for dinner recipes using ingredients I have-and then it remembers them for next time. I've saved lots of time and $

I once had to use Google AI to figure out why Google was ignoring my search parameters. At one point, Google was removing uncommon or specific answers because the were not common or generic enough. This issue has mostly been fixed, but it was pissing me off when it was still an issue.

But that's just the thing, you cannot be a 100% certain that it's accurate about even basic shit like actors' names and such. If you trust yourself more than the LLM, why even pay attention to its output in the first place? Are you just looking for a "yes man" at that point? Like, if you think it's wrong, you'll ignore it, but if you think it's right, you go "Yup! That tracks!"? What if you're both wrong?

Depends on the browser, but in essence you add a custom search engine, have it use the address "https://www.google.com/search?udm=web&q=%s" and make it default. It will do the search with that when you type it in the address bar.
Chrome: Settings -> Search engine -> Manage search engines and site search -> Site search -> Add. Once it's added, click the ... button and select "Make default"
Firefox: Settings -> Search -> Search Shortcuts -> Add. Then select it from the pulldown menu at the top.

It adds &udm=14 to the Google search string, which (for now anyway) turns off their AI summary thing. Or use DuckDuckGo. :)

don't need an add-on, don't need to touch about:config. Just add an entry in the settings->search, then once you have it added at the top of that page you can make it the default. Also, firefox has a built-in AI kill switch, make sure to toggle that.

Good. Something must have changed, the last time I tried doing custom search engine stuff in Firefox, which was to add &udm=14 of course, it had been locked down, and only an about:config setting changed unlocked the ability to add/change search engines. 🤷♂️

There are however several issues.
The first is that the level of LLM you can run locally in a home right now is no where near powerful enough to do the kinds of things the commercially run LLMs are capable of.
The second is that they still require very expensive systems.
The third is that the commercially run LLMs require too much power and too much cooling. What LLMs are basically doing at the moment is using brute force to run 2080's tech in the 2020s

The fourth, is that at current, LLM tech is being used in alarming ways that violate common sense. Like there was a doll that used an online LLM and ended up resulting in a log of everything the child said being stored on a company's servers, as if remote surveillance were ok. Hence my earlier focus on LOCALLY run LLMs which don't violate the user's privacy.

The fifth final, and (to me at least) most important caveat is that not only are LLMs insufficient to adequately replace most of the human labor companies are trying to use it to replace, but our economic system is not where it needs to be to handle the displaced workers.
Really LLMs are best for automation tasks that we didn't already use humans for.

I tried it once to get some prompts for some writing I wanted to do. I was amazed at how well it worked. AI always gets negatively attacked and I can see why but it has really good uses too, once it develops a reliable oversight system I suppose.

Its only as good as the user. When people tell me it gave obvious wrong or stupid answers then I assume you asked it a stupid question. Its a big time and money saver for me. Its also been awesome at finding things in seconds (with links) that would take me an hour. Another thing its been super helpful with is organization. I tell it to format information, make charts, check lists etc.

YES! I use it to cook and bake and oh my lord has it been awesome. Its also how I shopping for things, it finds me the best prices instantly-no spending an hour shopping 50 different store websites or trying to wade through google results. My favorite thing it has done was I gave it my kids school lunch calendar and what he liked. I asked for a calendar with pack vs. Buy days and make a menu for pack days. It has an inventory of my pantry. Spit out a beautiful calendar in seconds.

Only if you are a moron when asking it to do something. Its only as good as the user. For example, I dont ask it "give me recipes for dinner with the following ingredients.." i ask it "I have the following ingredients. Find me highly rated dinner recipes sourcing only dining/food websites and authored by real chefs. Include the source for each recipe suggestion". I get instant and reputable results. Weve had some great dinners lately.
