That's more the issue of having a 2 party system; old money dems don't have the same beliefs as the progressives yet, they have to work together to have even a chance of winning. The biggest dem party leaders would be considered 1980's republicans, yet everyone gets bundled together; hence why Joe Manchin was a "Democrat" yet kept on voting on the fringe.

All countries have left of center parties or wings within a party which form a coalition to get shit done. The difference is that the Ds do not, in fact, get much done. What little they have done is entirely social policy and then comes at the cost of other long standing social policies. The same week DOMA was struck down, civil rights restrictions were rolled back. We have more LGBT restrictions all while Roe v Wade was struck down. Lionized "RBG" while her grasping to power screwed us.

The Ds have completely failed on meaningful economic policy. The reality is people only really care about socially liberal policies (what the Rs call 'identity politics') when their wallets aren't empty. Ds have assumed that every brown and black voter is theirs for the taking, see Biden's comments to the same ("you're not black if"). The heads of the party are completely disconnected from reality.
