#18 as a frequent Thrifter, I will WITHOUT FAIL always see 2 copies of The Persuit of Happiness no matter what thrift store I'm in

#8 the thing is, it never said it fits well. Just that it FITS. But we take it as the meaning that it fits perfectly.

That actually sounds like a magnificent concept for a movie. Not even a horror film. A feel good movie (with horrifric elements).

1 day ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It is really good. I imagined the sequel as something with her being in school for the first time, and she brings a friend over, friend gets scared, girl gets bullied for being different. Then I imagined a third movie that’s pretty much just Carry.

Looked it up and holy crap Veery Thrush’s migrate from the Amazon rainforest to Canada to breed.

#12 I don’t care how many papers I co-authored with Jacques, I’ll always let him name his theories after himself. Unless my last lame was Zucker. Then I’ll accept an attribution.

#8 leather gloves were also unaffordable to the common people.

I don’t know where I thought this was going, but was surprised. Exhale- laughed through my nose +1

1 day ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

#8 #3 combo hit a nerve. You can buy leather work gloves out of the same goddamn box at Lows Depot that have the same size label and they be different. Varying from "clearly"-mislabed-too-too-small through too-too-big.

1 day ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thats what happens when you make fitted items out of a minimally-processed piece of natural material. Leather shrinks, and no 2 pieces shrink the same, so even if you cut all the pieces identically and stitch them together in the exact same way, theyre gonna have some variation to em, specially the cheaper ones where theres more variability in the manufacturing

#8 once upon a time I did find gloves that fit perfectly, and they were employee-only gloves so I bought like 15 pairs before I quit. Wore through all of them, tremendous quality and dexterity, never again

#8 yeah cause I want to spend $100 on a pair of fucking custom made gloves and $200 on pants

Guaranteed poor people didnt used to have well fitting gloves - probably couldn’t afford them at all or just made them themselves

#8 Mass-manufacturing does have its advantages and can be a bit of a class equalizer. Not many people could afford custom-made gloves in the Victorian era. Those were expensive luxury items (thanks to capitalism). The working poor were lucky if they had home-knitted mittens. Many wrapped rags around their hands or braved the winter cold bare-handed.

1 day ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

Fun fact: you can still get gloves that fit your hands perfectly! They're really expensive, but they were really expensive back then, too. The difference is that now cheap gloves exist.

#3 Someday soon you'll be able to 3d scan yourself with your phone and get a perfect fit. The tradeoff will be that Bezo and Zuck now have 3d scans of everybody's boobs. (the data leaks will be frequent).

As a cis man, scans of my hairy boobs have little value.

I thought this comment was about the glove one and was like... How do you think you measure for gloves?

1 day ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 0

Measure for glove by palming a boob, just like back in the olden days, where they treated depression with vibrators, and cocaine.

1 day ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

#1 Ha! Only a non-cat owner could possibly think that. Especially when the cat is a longhair.

1 day ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

When it's on your cat, it's fur. When it's on anything else, it's cat hair.

#7 After being super shyly asked a few times if I had any pads/tampons, I put together a little emergency period box in a semi hidden cabinet in the back of my classroom. Asked all the boys to leave class early one day and showed the girls saying they didn’t need to ask, just come grab one from here. One girl said “You’re such a Girl Mom!” and now I wear that badge with pride!

1 day ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I used to keep tampons in my bathroom in case a woman came over and needed it. A bunch of people were over once, a few of them women, and I guess they looked in the cabinet because they asked why the tampons were in there if I was single, and I said “in case someone is over and needs one,” and then all the women who came with boyfriends were like, “wtf, why don’t you have this amenity at your house?”to their boyfriends.

1 day ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I think I got the idea from a post I saw here, maybe Reddit. All I know is that every woman who came over and knew about that thought I was the nicest guy to have spent my money on tampons “just” so women would be comfortable if they failed to plan correctly one time.

Please also put up a sign telling them not to flush any feminine products EVEN IF THEY SAY FLUSHABLE. We had a guest flush one. Our pipes were bad enough, that turned into a week without showers or washing clothes, no washing dishes, .... Nothing but toilet paper is ACTUALLY safe to flush in every drain system.

1 day ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I was 40+ years old when I found out that included tampons. “LOL who tf is flushing pads?!” Meanwhile I was the problem for 30 years - whoops.

#9 As a dog person: all dogs smell.

1 day ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

As a cat person, that's why I don't have dogs.

20 hours ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is true, but they still smell considerably better than cats. People who have multiple cats in their house are seemingly unaware of the reek of litter, rancid fish, and piss that soaks into everything (carpets, walls, couches, clothing, bedding).

1 day ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

But some smell more and some smell less. Same with the oil. Your average retriever is made for spending half his day in some pond looking for dead ducks, of course he's oily, and the oil is smelly. My dog is a double-coated shepherd supermutt something-or-other and his fur is dry and nearly odorless. He sheds like crazy though.

1 day ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

All dogs are ‘nearly odorless’ to their owners, because they are around them all the time. I grew up around dogs, but don’t have time for one, so I don’t have one. Whenever I visited my parents, it struck me how noticeable the odor was.

1 day ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I would have agreed with you completely until I got this dog, whose uncanny lack of body odor has been noted by several friends, strangers and his vets. It's apparently his minor superpower. But don't worry, his halitosis makes up for it, I brush his teeth daily and it's still bad.

#8 But industry also allows *everyone* to have gloves that kinda sorta fit. With or without capitalism, tailored gloves are for the rich.

1 day ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 1

Wait... But you're kinda maybe saying capitalism has benefits, which it doesn't on imgur! People conveniently forget that TVs and ovens and vacuums running water to your home cost as much as cars back in the 1950's. Or that the average peasant spent 70% of their income on food, since nobody owned an oven so nobody cooked at home. Capitalism has made all those things so much cheaper and more convenient, not to mention you're reading this on a super computer we all carry in our pockets

10 hours ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, you can get tailored gloves today, not like it is impossible. But most people won't, since it will cost like 50-100x more than cheap gloves from Primark, and there won't be that much of a difference. Sure, the Primark one won't fit perfectly, and it likely will die in two to three winters, but the price difference will make most people ignore this happily.

1 day ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I'd like all my clothes to be tailored, but I feel like I would lose gloves too often for that to be worth it.

1 day ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nothing like making everything worse for everyone so half the people get access to something that costs them more (due to replacing them so much more often) than the nice thing they couldn't afford before. With capitalism, gloves are worse for everyone, more expensive for the poor, and marketed aggressively.

1 day ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Don't forget the predictably deteriorating quality over time!

1 day ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Everyone used to have tailored gloves, even the poor, because that's how gloves used to be made. The only people who wouldn't have tailored gloves would be people in extreme poverty who had second had gloves and didn't know anyone who could alter them.

1 day ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

Handy that you're so easily able to ignore people who couldn't afford to get gloves in the first place, second hand or otherwise. They wouldn't have tailored gloves either, kid.

1 day ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

Everyone who had gloves had tailored gloves, sure, but youre ignoring that that means that a lot fewer people had gloves

1 day ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

They actually used to be far more common than they are today, because they were an essential part of clothing in the winter. The fact is, there used to be a lot more people making clothes, because effectively all clothes were custom made.

1 day ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I feel like mittens were much more common than gloves before industrialization, and those both have much more leeway for sizing, and are easier to customize for just the longest finger.
If I had to guess, the mass switch from mittens to gloves probably came as late as the 1970s-1980s, with the mass adoption of synthetic fabrics.
