Skylar had to stomach what her husband had been doing, the grief of his life expectancy and the danger he had put everyone in. And she did it, she protected her kids and made it work to the best of her ability.

Several things can be true.

“It is absurd to divide people into good and bad. People are either charming or tedious.”

the sooner you accept this, the sooner the world starts to make sense.

4 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I disagree that it's an empathy test, they're not real people, you don't watch them because you think they're necessarily moral or upstanding, or all protagonists would be "lawful good" it's about entertainment, people want to be entertained. I disliked Skyler not because of what she did or why, but how she did it. Actress did a great job I'm sure, but if she was meant to be likeable she wasn't written well to be likeable.

The first episode is Flanders lighting a car on fire and picking fights with punks making fun of his kid. Yeah that kind of good will stuck around for good ol’ Walt!

So...if your spouse starts constantly lying and disappearing, leading a double life, you're not supposed to object?

4 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That was the whole point. The audience disliked Skylar as a way to like Walter more. It also underpins her theme of 'breaking bad' that her own arrogance leads to the mistakes she would make later. It's only more apparent after a second viewing that Skylar was out of her depth the entire time. This theme is also particularly relevant to Hank, but it resonates with most of the characters. It's the underlying thesis of the entire show.

She was a realistic character, boring to watch. And she fucked up his plans with no information, basically killing them all basically every time she did anything. She was an okay accountant? He should've encouraged her. He was a genius top 100 in the world chemist and she didn't ever notice that he wanted to reach his full potential or encourage him to do it? His family was the reason he never reached, which is why it was the reason he snapped. She didn't know him at all. He is the villain tho

4 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 4

He never reached because of his pride. He wanted a woman who didn’t want him back and left the industry over it

4 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Posts like this always bring out the “But she cheated” dumbasses who think it’s possible for someone who’s single to cheat, just because their former partner thinks they still own ‘em.

Skyler demanded a divorce, kicked Walt out, and when he forced his way back in, she fucked someone who, like her, was single.

4 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

Yeah, she made it clear she was done, he held her hostage. Someone not accepting the breakup doesnt mean the breakup didnt happen.

Its wild how many people side with the abuser if they find them entertaining.

I think people know she was mostly in the right. It's just that we're watching the show for entertainment and her perspective mostly just got in the way of more interesting things.

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

While I do understand that she went through a lot and for that I do admire her resilience, I also dislike how her contribution to the overall plot was giving Ted her husband's drug money to save the former's failing business, so that Walt had a reason to go and make more. That and being on the other end of Walt's best lines.

I think that if she was shown to have a more active role instead of just laundering his money people would like her more.

4 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

She didn't do it to save Ted's business she did it because the IRS would have looked into Teds business and then looked into Skylar because her name was all over Ted's books, and when they look into Skylar suddenly they see Walt.

4 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I felt there are several characters that needed more development in that series, skyler, the son, skyler's sister.

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I completely understand but also most of the hate Skylar gets is simply cause she wasn't entertaining. Walt was brilliant and you wanted to see what he'd do next, Jesse was funny and sympathetic, but she just wasn't entertaining. She was right and reasonable but you don't watch breaking bad to see people behave reasonably. So she was perfect and necessary for the show but also annoying and boring when she was actually on screen

4 months ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 7

Full agree. She was boring. In real life you don't care about boring as long as you're safe, and it's safe to stay at home and consider prudent financial options for medicine instead of engaging with murderers and dangerous chemicals.

4 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I have to hard disagree on the "Walt was brilliant" thing. I watched BB late, so based on discourse I was expecting him to be some kind of genius anti-hero but he's just... So very, very stupid. The only reason the show makes it past Season 1 is because everyone around him is just somehow *more* stupid. I found Walter insufferable because he makes the wrong decision at every single turn, but has anime protag levels of plot armor.

4 months ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

I think he meant brilliant as in entertaining. He was absolutely winging it and getting very lucky but that made us want to see what kind of ass pull he'd use to get out of the current mess.

4 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I didn't know people didn't like the character, she came off as justified given the situation. Plus she was pretty ride or die for walt even when she hated his guts

4 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I'll never forget her giving the world's most depressing hand job

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I like stones.

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hank wound up being the best person on the show.

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I had to ditch BB after 1 or 2 seasons cause I just didn't like or care about ANY of the characters. And while the plot was interesting, the writing/dialogue did little to naught for me. I think there's also a thing where people who have never been exposed to a world (whether it's drugs, gangs, violence, etc) are automatically drawn to it - and those who have are less so.

BCS however was remarkable for just how unique a series it was. I binged that one & Pluribus both end-to-end.

4 months ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 3

same. I struggled through most of 3, then stopped. It doesnt get better.

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It was a hard watch but I'm glad I got through it. One of the few TV experiences where things wrap up in a satisfying way (Sopranos OTOH)

4 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

There's been some shows like that where, after a while, I had no investment in any of the characters. I hate-watched "Bones" for years just for the supporting cast; I hated the two lead characters.

4 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

My desire to see Walter finally get caught was what drove me to finish the series. Absolutely worth it, especially if you liked BCS

4 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Me reacting to 90% of the BB made audience

4 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I hated Walt and stopped watching the show pretty early on because I couldn't stand what a dick he was. Someone said to keep watching it and I did but it's nothing compared to Better Call Saul. They took the most annoying character from BB and made an entire show where he's admired.

4 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

If you liked BCS, you owe it to yourself to push through BB, if only for all of Saul Goodman's moments in it. Hating Walt is the appropriate response though. I didn't hate-watch it because I liked many of the other characters, but I was watching specifically so I could see Walt finally get what he deserved.

4 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Haven't watched BB so I can't comment on this specific character, but as someone on Tumblr said of character preferences in general: "The war crimes are fictional but my annoyance is real."

4 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

From the perspective of the show, she drags more family drama into drug dealing empire drama. She's portrayed as an antagonist, people like old Malkie here just don't have too much media literacy.

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I saw one commercial for the Middle reboot and it looks like cocomelon for adults

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Walter's treatment of his family is the main reason I never made it through season 2. How can you treat your spouse and child like shit yet claim to love them at the same time?

4 months ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 3

people do this on the daily, specially when thinking they're the exception

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Let me get this straight… you’ve NEVER encountered a toxic family before? You had a functional healthy relationship with your parents growing up? Every one of your friends had a healthy relationship with their parents? No one was abusive or manipulative or had to deal with mental illness? My god, I’d pay a million dollars to have your upbringing.

4 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 12

They didn't say it's unrealistic.

4 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They said they don’t understand it.

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Indeed, I don't know if I could say I understand "how" people can be like that, either, which is truly comprehending how their thought processes work and how they feel about things, but that's different from not understanding "that" they can. At least, that's what I'd mean if I said "how can you". To truly learn what another person means when they say something can take a lot of questions. I'm just presuming they're using it how I would.

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or ... maybe they don't find that entertaining.

4 months ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

Dude it gets so much worse

4 months ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Fr, Walt is way nicer than Heisenberg

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You missed out on an epic show that deals with exactly this in its final season.

4 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I made it all the way through, but I switched to rooting for him to get caught.

4 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That's the point of the series, a good guy becoming evil.

4 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I've never been more sympathetic to a character having an affair.

4 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Downvote me if you want to. She demanded a divorce, then kicked Walt out (for cooking meth and endangering their family), then he threatened her. She was single, and had no obligation of any kind to avoid fucking whoever she wanted.

4 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Skyler is great. She takes everything in stride. When Walt's to crimes are thrust upon her, she adapts and does her best to keep him from getting caught. Then when everything unravels, she plays along perfectly to cut him loose while protecting the rest of the family. She was put into an impossible situation and navigated it masterfully.

Marie, on the other hand...

4 months ago | Likes 328 Dislikes 15

What fucking show were you watching lol

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

You know, honestly, I feel like Skylar's reaction is a result of the fact that she got thrown into the deep end without warning, while Walt slowly got to wade in and acclimate to the situation.

I feel like she would have been more down with all of it had Walt brought her into it a lot sooner.

Skylar is a lot like Walt. It's a very interesting dynamic.

4 months ago | Likes 53 Dislikes 0

I loved the tax man audit scene! She is hilarious and nails it!

4 months ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 0

my complaint is they didn't develop walt's family well. I know Skyler and their son a fraction of how well we knew the Soprano Family. There were very few story line's and plots of them living beyond Walt to develop well rounded characters

4 months ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

I've never hated her, I barely know her

4 months ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

On the other hand, the episodes when you do learn about their family life are arguably the most boring ones of them all.

4 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

still. it's just odd that they largely glossed over his son's reaction to dad being let go from school. So little conflict took place between them when it came to the changing family dynamic or new found wealth later on. They barely gave him agency or identity for a kid who seemed to have friends and be out of the house doing things.

Who gives a shit? It’s not like she cheated.

4 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

Walt poisoned a child.

4 months ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 2

Not quite. She thinks she takes everything in stride, but her arrogance makes her blind to what's happening. Then when she starts realizing the scope of Walt's antics, her arrogance makes her think she can control the situation. The same theme applies to Hank, Marie, Tuco, Gus, Mike (and Saul to a degree). That's the beauty of the show: most characters are victims of their hubris. They are all "breaking bad" in context to how Jessie uses the phrase in S1 when Walt give shim the cash for the RV.

4 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

The series starts out portraying Walter in as sympathetic a light as possible on purpose to make the audience like him. The show creator was kinda taken aback at how many people still hated Skyler after it should have been super obvious that Walter had been gaslighting her.

4 months ago | Likes 243 Dislikes 7

They set the show up so that while yes Walter is a bad person he's still the protagonist of the show, the character we spend most time with/

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

so it's natural to want his efforts to succeed. Yes he's a bad person but this is a piece of fiction and we're here for the ride.

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

On 1st watch I hated her, but mostly because I was impatient to see the plot move forward. On 2nd watch, I realized she was 100% right.

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

then that show runner should have developed Walt's family more. We know very little about them that isn't directly linked to Walt. His son is an incredibly minor character. Later seasons only ran conflict plots so it isn't surprising people saw the relationship as 100% friction. You didn't give us much with any of them.

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah I never understood this. I had this same exact conversation.

4 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think it was completely because of her acting. She was hard to like. Like logically reading a script I think most people would at the very least agree she was right. But her performance caused everyone to just hate her

4 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I will day that watching the show the second time I sided much more heavily with Skyler. On the first watch she was the main character keeping Walter from "breaking bad" and thus slowling down the fall which made her feel annoying. On second watch she was a victim of Walter's constant gaslighting and just trying her best to adapt and survive.

4 months ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

They are kinda all bad people, thats what i took away from the show. Sure some were made to be more likable or sympathetic but in general, no one in that show was really a good person

4 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Walter Jr was. I contend that Skyler was too. The stuff she ends up doing later is largely due to the psychological damage Walter inflicted on her.

4 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I only watched the first 2 or 3 episodes. I hated the son more than the wife which is saying something...

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I didn't watch this show mid hype because i wanted a more honest opinion of it and to not be influenced by the masses. I watched it summer last year 2025 front to back....the first season is a fucking SLOG to get through and i gave up twice and had to finish it late summer after forcing myself to get through it. Walt is very much a gaslighting douche that chooses drugs over his family because ...its a lot of easy money for him. Can't say i wouldn't do the same?? But his wife as a character....

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

She's in the right of it like 75% of the time, but she does some REALLY stupid, REALLY dumb things constantly and is a very boring character all around. If she had a more proactive role in the story of events and was doing more things i think she could have turned out great, but the show did a really good job of having the viewers empathize and sympathize with walt. Shit most americans WISH they could have his money to afford health care. He's living their dream.

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Overall i'd rate the show like a 7/10. It's good, but its predictable as all hell and it falls in a rut in the second to last season that it struggles to get out of.

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Incorrect, everyone is shit. All the characters are bad people. Walter kills multiple people for money. Jesse just goes along with everything. Skyler shows zero empathy to her husband dying of cancer. All the side characters are bad. They never break bad

4 months ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 10

Hank, yea he was overbearing and demeaning, but he never loses his morality. You hate him on the show...but that's part of the brillance of the writing. Why do i as anaudience want the guys making meth to win?

4 months ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Because fuck the cops, that's why.

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Because the first few episodes set up Walter as a sympathetic character. Anyone who even knows what the American healthcare system is like sees him and thinks “There but for the grace of god go I”.

It’s not until quite a bit later we realise he’s a ruthless bastard who destroys everything he comes into contact with.

4 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I agree. Hank was a good man. That’s why Walter cried the way he did when Hank died. Walter never had a single bit of empathy for anyone he got killed but he broke down over Hank.

4 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Skyler showed a lot of empathy to her husband dying of cancer. She only started showing less when he started lying to her and gaslighting her about what he was really doing.

4 months ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

"Oh no! We directed people down an emotional path and they followed it! Why?!"

4 months ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 12

No, it was more that they continued hating her even after the show made it clear Wlater was the asshole and she was acting like any normal person would have in her situation. The hate got so bad people would transfer their hatred of the character to the actress. OP is right that she's a test for the audience, and many Breaking Bad fans still fail it.

Skyler showed a bunch of empathy to Walter. You might need to rewatch the first season.

4 months ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

I don't remember the show extremely well as it has been a long time, but I remember feeling that walt didn't really do anything wrong up until he randomly decided to murder jesse's girlfriend for no reason which felt like a very bizarre and stupid way to turn your main character into a bad guy

4 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

That was certainly a point of no return, but he was a certifiable bad guy long before that. He mentally abused the hell out of Skylar with all the gaslighting he was doing to her. The way the show is set up makes it hard to see at first, because so much of what we see is from his perspective and he resented her even before she started trying to figure out what he was actually up to, so it made her seem like a prying bitch rather than a genuinely concerned wife.

4 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Other than, you know, all the meth.

4 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

what's wrong with meth

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

...other than, you know, having very little or no choice due to the American healthcare system

4 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

the drugs were not the problem, its the power tripping and killing people that did Walter in as evil. its was the murders, drugs don't make someone bad using or selling.

Honestly speaking in terms of the meth/drugs Walter was one of the good guys, he made a PURE product, he made a product that wasn't cut with things that would make the risk for the user even higher than expected.

ridding a roller coaster is dangerous, but shouldn't be more dangerous than you expect it to be.

Why does the Internet get so weird about this

Do you have baby brains

Do you know the difference between right and wrong

ICE puts the Punisher skull on their speshul sekret coins. Orange cats have more braincells.

4 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I have not watched the show. I'm commenting on the nature of the expectations and interaction between writers and watchers.

4 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 7

Aight well definitely don't argue for something you're not even familiar with lmao

4 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

You managed to make an even dumber statement than simply being wrong. Well done.

4 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

The problem is they expected that once they showed the audience he was a piece of shit, that they'd stop liking him. That's pretty normal human behaviour, and a reasonable expectation. But they didn't, they just doubled down on hating her. Same happened in Mad Men with Don and Betty. I know she eventually cheated, but he was cheating all along and everyone hated her for not being happy in the relationship.

4 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Never underestimate the depth of American misogyny.

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, but it's pretty normal for fans to lock in on classification of characters. Especially when the show/book deliberately sets up the perspective. Reveals will change opinions when characters were left unresolved, open-ended, ambiguous.

4 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Indeed... in other words, most people are a lot shittier than we believe, even than the well-educated and creative folks among us, like authors, believe. Of course, the show started in 2008, well before 2016. I expect the writers know better by now.

4 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes, because when I am watching a show about a drug king pin I want the wife's input on her being dragged into said drug empire. That's like watching Pablo Escobar documentary then complaining about how bad Pablo is and Marie, his wife, was right and Pablo was in the wrong. That's not why we are watching the documentary on Pablo. Some body geesh

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Shows are set up to make you empathize, bond with and feel compassion for the protagonist, whether they are good and evil. Shows that can't accomplish that don't last for long and when that character we've bonded with are threatened (mild or major) by other characters, we typically dislike the antagonists doing it to them. This is writing 101. It's no surprise people dislike Skyler, she was PURPOSELY set up to be disliked.

4 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well, yeah. That's 101. I would expect any experienced media consumer -- and even mature and educated people in general -- to understand that those initial perceptions can be misleading and that writing with _depth_ to it, beyond 101, may try to subvert your expectations, once in a while.

Not everyone has that kind of media literacy, but let's not pretend it's exactly a high bar. The Ace Attorney games would eat these people alive.

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The problem with this argument is you make it seem like a season started and Walt was suddenly evil and Skyler was suddenly good. They tried to change Skyler without ever addressing the protag/antag relationship between her and Walt, and Walt never stopped being the main protagonist so even when Skyler becomes a victim of his, they hadn't done enough to change perception of the relationship for people to like her. It's not a matter of media literacy in this case, >C

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's literally that the writers screwed the pooch in trying to actually redeem her without actually doing anything to redeem or alter perception in her favor and make her into a sympathetic character instead of the "nagging house wife who gave her husband an unenthusiastic handjo on his birthday". The writers feign surprise because they fucked up and also it's free virtue points.

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I can follow along with most of what you said, but this part has me concerned: "They tried to change Skyler without ever addressing the protag/antag relationship between her and Walt, and Walt never stopped being the main protagonist". My point was that a story being written from someone's perspective doesn't make them "good" and shouldn't automatically have you agreeing with them on everything. That would surrender your entire sense of morality and identity to a stranger's piece of fiction.

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The surprise was that it lasted long past when the show made it clear that she'd be a victim from the start, also that people transferred their hatred of the character to the actress that played her.

4 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Agreed, at least with the hatred of the actress. If you can't separate even that basic bit you really shouldn't be indulging in ANY media. This is the kind of stuff that ruined the lives of several star wars actors. However, in regards to the character, yeah she does become a victim but the showrunners never really did enough to alter the protagonist/antagonist relationship between her and Walter. After all, Walt NEVER stopped being the protagonist, so yeah, people gonna side with the protag.

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just want some of the chicken , I mean the way they portrayed it .

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Mans was just out there tryna support his family!!!

4 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

I mean you can hate both of them. Keying in on Walt being the real POS doesnt suddenly make Skler more likeable as a character. I dislike her because shes boring and Walt being a giant piece of shit does nothing to make her NOT boring.

4 months ago | Likes 69 Dislikes 9

Most annoying about her is the not communicating part. Sure, all walt does is tell lies. But then she storms out, avoiding the bullshit instead of calling him out on it. She actually did that once (about the second cellphone) and it was weak asf.

I just hate the scenes with skyler because it means walt is being a horrible lying jackass in those scenes

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah I didn't hate her. I just found the conflict between her and Walter boring and grating so I always skipped it

4 months ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 2

Yeah but if you liked Breaking Bad, what character did you empathize with? If you didn’t empathize with anyone, what made you watch it? Those are interesting questions.

4 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

Who did I empathize with? Mostly Hank, to be honest, then Jessie.

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

First character that comes to mind that I empathized with was Jane's dad. But you don't need to empathize with characters in a story. Succession is a great example of that, too.

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Probably the dude who owned the car wash. Honestly though the show didnt really jive with me. Like I can tell its a well made show and I can see WHY it is considered so great but me personally I just couldn't get into it. I only watched it because a friend of mine agreed to watch a series I really liked that he had never seen if I agreed to do the same.

4 months ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

I have similar thoughts. It was good but it was also work, for lack of a better term. It never struck me as something to sit down and relax to so it fell out of favor for me to shows that were less technically masterful but more enjoyable.

Avatar the Last Air Bender. He had written it off as a kids show but I knew if he gave it a shot he'd love it which he did in the end.

Lots of popular stories have no one to empathize with. Everyone's an asshole isn't my taste, but it's not rare.

4 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

I’ve watched a season and felt empathy for Jesse but he didn’t get out when he had the chance at the end

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"*Nearly* everyone's an asshole and everyone gets what they deserve" is very nice to watch. It's basically the polar opposite of mosr horror movies, where "This person doesn't deserve this but it's happening anyways".

4 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

A tradition as old as Greek mythology to Macbeth.

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I started out interested in seeing how far Walter could go, but I did eventually switch to feeling like Skyler's stuck in a horror movie. She wasn't perfect, and was a bit boring, but she didn't deserve any of what Walter put her through.

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's interesting how many of the most popular shows have insinuated the wife of the main character is a burden because she doesn't want to be treated like shit and lied to.

If Walt was such a good chemist, he could create all kinds of drugs that are far less dangerous than freaking meth. Create an entirely safe mild hallucinogen and follow the rave circuits and weekend festivals, my guy. You'd be rich and certainly have a better time.

4 months ago | Likes 74 Dislikes 5

He's not an cartoon inventor, he's just a highly intelligent chemist. Serious medical research is outside his wheelhouse.

4 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Walt's smart, but he's MacGyver smart, not Tony Stark smart; most of his cleverness is in solving practical, material problems, not in the ability to make a radical leaps in scientific discovery. Arguably the biggest breakthrough he makes in the show (making the first batch of Blue Sky methamphetamine) was just applying professional technique to pre-existing criminal tradecraft.

I think they absolutely did too! But I remember when it came out, people hated his wife because she was... I don't know... Tired of being his housekeeper while he stuck his dick in everyone else?

She treats him like shit from Ep1 though. IF the had set it up with Skylar having some energy for Walt before things went to shit then the audience would have been on her side from day 1. But instead we see her giving half-efforts in more ways than one, then fucking her boss when her cancer husband seems to be in the midst of a personal crisis she doesn't understand.

She doesn't treat him like shit though. She literally makes him a meal to help him live longer because she loves him and cares about him and it's treated like she's a villain for doing so. She is clearly a woman who is exhausteddd because she has to take care of her disabled son and deal with a wishy-washy pathetic man who doesn't have BASIC communication skills. He literally lies about her getting cancer. Fuck off with all of this.

Rewatch the show and turn down your internal misogyny setting. Their relationship was already not great at the start because of all the resentment and self-pity Walter was holding inside. All of her bad choices only came after months and months of mental abuse from Walter gaslighting her about what he was really up to.

Exactly this. Walter is the kind of dude who hates his life but doesn't understand basic healthy communication. He can only be a passive little baby or a nightmare ego bully. Because he's pathetic and manipulative. It's wild how many people see him as a good guy or side with him... The whole point of the show, even from the perspective of Walt, is that he is a fucking villain and a bad dude to the core.

Or as Saul said, they could have sued the people that stole Gray Matter from Walt and made lots of money.

there are plenty of women who have conflict with their husbands who were more well rounded and better written. The show barely acknowledged Walt having a family, especially his son. They were after thoughts for conflict. Sopranos developed the family dynamic far more to where each character had story lines outside of Tony.

I just finished The Sopranos for the first time this year! Edie Falco was brilliantttt.

100%. Jersey Mommy and I love her. She was flawed, hypocritical, divorcing, in conflict with Tony... and I loved her across all of it. This is a fair comparison because both were TV powerhouses of roughly the same era. 1 show developed the family, the other didn't

I don't want to be mean, but the only thing I can think of when it comes to Walt's son is "disabled". I can't remember anything noteworthy of his navigating high school/the firing of his dad from school. They glossed over his experience. In contrast, AJ sucked but we had a lot of reasons as to why. He was the environment the parents created.

Yeah, he was absolutely used as a "greater than normal burden and risk" character with no backstory, the same way Harlan was in season 2 of Umbrella Academy.

I'm disabled, so it really pisses me off when people use a disabled person that could essentially be replaced with a dog and it would be the same story.

you're right because the thought i omitted was "he could have been the family dog" but didn't want to take shots at anyone. was just kind of there.

Spoken like somebody that has never taken a semester in organic chem. Do you even know what Chirality means?

Yes, I'm absolutely sure there is some valid scientific reason that would not be realistic. Buuuut I might argue..

I'm not debating reality. It's a TV show on HBO where a chemistry teacher makes blue meth with his student. I think a show where a chemistry teacher made hallucinogens with his student might also be quite fun to watch. 🤷🍄

But he lived in Albuquerque. He knew his market.

You're ..not wrong.

Thing is his ambition was not to only make money. If this was all he wanted he could simply accept to go back to work with his past associate. He wanted power and recognition.

Yeah, considering how good he is at optimizing the process of cooking meth, he probably could get high paying consulting jobs in chemical and pharmaceutical industry if he wanted (and if he wasn't such abrasive personality to work with). It would be funny if in that other timeline he was hired by Madrigal to consult on a certain underground lab project.

I don't know, being the dude who brings the awesome hallucinogens to a bunch of people partying would be an ungodly amount of power and recognition.

from who

He was also on a clock, cancer-wise. Not a lot of time to build up your rave-circuit buisness.

Hundreds of chill party people in one location wanting to buy drugs is wayyyy easier than having meetups with dangerous gang members in remote locations... They literally sell themselves. He also doesn't encroach on the business of anyone who would murder him in said remote location.

I hate to burst your bubble, but Molly, special k and a bunch of other rave drugs are usually produced in mass from organized crime that has zero qualms about eliminating their competition.

Sounds like a good basis of screenplay. Write it. Breaking Beats or something.
