It would be great if this was in motel rooms.

I have that same version! And the leather bound version of the hobbit made to look like Bilbo's notebook.

The Lord of the Rings is one story written as six books and a set of appendices. It is usually (but not always) published in three volumes.
notBobMarley
in norway that book is red
Mundunedain
I have the same book! I told my super catholic mom it was my bible and she freaked on me!
SwordsToTheSkyWeRideAtDawn

I'm super jealous. I've been drooling over that exact edition for the past 3 years, but I've never had the cash and I already own 2 lotr bks

Technically they were supposed to be there parts, to one book. So it's actually just "The Lord of the Rings".
scoobydoo965
Three*
LanceD85
True. His publishers forced him to break the story into three parts because of the high cost of paper back in the day.
scoobydoo965
I knew they forced him, but didn't know why. As a life long Tolkien fan, thank you for TIL
RaceMeIRL
He wanted 6 books. They made him jam it into 3 because of the scarcity of paper due to the ongoing war effort.
IAmASentientWaffle
One novel, three volumes, six books.
Vaars
Been telling people this for years. People always forget the 6 books part
strideo
But if they're six books why are they usually published as three books?
Vaars
If I recall, publishers didn't want to commit funds for 6 book publications, and didn't think people would buy/read 1 massive book.
IAmASentientWaffle
Three *volumes*. Historically, a book was (also) a major subdivision of a literary work, above chapters. LotR is always divided into 6 books
IAmASentientWaffle
It is then usually published as three volumes of two books each (also originally), or one large volume.
betyouwontpussy
Get out of here with your logic and making sense.
scoobydoo965
I am a huge lotr fan, read it once a year, several lotr tats and all lol. Superfan
betyouwontpussy
It's amazing. I wish there was a way to bring Tolkien back from the dead just so he can continue writing stories about middle earth.

That's your New Testament, pal. The complete works of JRR Tolkien would be the Bible
betyouwontpussy
Where can I find this magical piece of literature?!
strawberryblonder
All three books were originally supped to be one book, but I believe his editor(?) said to break it into three.
LanceD85
If you haven't read it, check out The Silmarillion. It's absolutely amazing.
crann
I love that the LotR is like 3 lines in that book, just showing the scale of the world he created.

Are they in chronological order?
CanadianFurr
Wait, what is this?
Sistermavage
That stack lacks The Children of Turin, which is my favorite.
VitruvianFilms
That's included in the book of lost tales part II, hence why it is my favorite :)
Sistermavage
Is it really? I actually don't have either of the books of lost tales. Gotta step up my Tolkien game
