Join a local astronomy club. If you live somewhere light polluted or can't afford a scope, they will have loaner scopes and a place to use it. (An observatory or a field, depending on the size of the club.)

When I was in second grade I did a report on NASA for school. I wrote to NASA and they sent me three huge manila envelopes filled with glossy 8X11 color pictures of the Apollo missions, patches and stickers from every mission and a signed letter from the head of NASA. I was so geeked. The worst part? I lost all of that stuff. I'd give anything to have that stuff still. I'm sure NASA doesn't do stuff like that anymore.

When I was in first grade and we were making the usual rounds of asking everyone what they wanted to be when they grew up, I said I wanted to be an astronaut and go to the moon. What did this teacher, in charge building up ~30 young brains at a time say to me?
"Oh, Canadians can't be astronauts and they don't go to the moon anymore".

Canadians can’t be astronauts? Bitch, please! Canada was the third country in orbit, built the legs for the lunar lander legs (which means we touched down before anybody else!) AND built the god. I was eight or so which is what? second or third grade? When I had a similar experience so I switched to my second choice which was 'Bishop' because if I wasn't going to get to go to the moon I wanted a gig where my rent was paid for me and all I had to do was walk around and tell people what to do.
She's definitely dead, my mam called me to let me know when it happened because we both so thoroughly hated her.

No but potentially better in that I became a QA Architect so I get to tell a bunch of nerds how to do a job that makes sure a few million dorks have some convenience in their lives and never ever have to sully myself by speaking to a user. Even our parish bishops had to deliver communion, I just have to write case studies.

My Mam though.... I'm the result of a mixed marriage - my Dad was Catholic and my Mam a Protestant which was a bit politically charged at the time in Ireland and when I was born the local Catholic priest called her an evil woman and declared I was going ot hell because she was having me baptised Protestant so she spend the next four decades with her two middle fingers extended to all that bullshit.

But she was such a Godzilla tier force of nature, militant charity and aggressive decency that when she passed the Catholic priest informed us that my parents had expressed a desire to be buried together in his chapel across the road from their home and as such he had arranged for a plot in pride of place normally reserved for the clergy overlooking their house and also it was for free. She brute-force overrode a historic religious divide through sheer "Fuck it we ball" energy.

My son was obsessed with space when he was around 2yo. He knew all the planets, asteroid belts and whatever the fuck else is floating up there. He could barely fucking talk. And he learned to read at the time too and would read space books. It lasted few years and then suddenly space wasn't a thing for him anymore. He is so fucking smart it scares the shit out of me. Nowadays he is more of a geography person, knows every country at 11yo etc. Cool beans.

Well I can tell you that in 1968 I watched an Apollo launch in my second grade classroom (they wheeled out the black and white tv!) and I was upset because everyone in the control room at Houston was a boy (with a crew cut, white short sleeve button down shirt, thin dark tie, horn rim glasses). So 13 years later I graduated with a BS in aerospace engineering and went on to a career in wind tunnel and flight test back when I was the only damn girl in the room. Science inspires!!!

I took an astro class in undergrad—one of two ladies out of 100ish students. At the end of term, the prof actually apologized for being patronizing. Gender ratio where I work now is slightly better (7m:1f) and our engineering dept is lead by a woman.

My last physics prof even hosted a weekly "What Physicsts Actually Do" series to highlight potential varied career paths and the equally varied people pursuing them—from designing semiconductors, to an AMA with a NASA/SOFIA, to a writer for Dr. Who. Fun times.
