I’m not sure it’s that deep. I’ll ask my little nephews tomorrow if they know who Popeye is. They love the Cuphead show so hopefully they got interested in the old animations that inspired it.

Might not be the same thing. Mine was 2 sticks and 1 piece of string being wound around and around. But they can get way more complex I was just doing the kids version.
