Shibori Curtains

We needed 100% cotton for the curtains and I was thinking of making my own, but then I found some from Ikea for £20 which is what the fabric would have probably cost me anyway so I bought them instead!

Folded each curtain into a concertina horizontally...

...and then did the same length ways.

Cut 4 plywood blocks, leaving about an inch of fabric around the edge, and placed these at the top and bottom of both curtain piles, leaving the tabs out.

Secured each block and curtain with string and elastic bands. For the tabs we thought it would be cool if they were funky and random so just did whatever we felt like with the elastic bands.

With the indigo solution that I'd bought off amazon, we dipped the curtains so that they were completely covered then left them to oxidize and turn blue for twenty minutes. We then repeated this step and after the next twenty minutes we rinsed them in cold water to get rid of any excess dye. Be careful with the dye by the way, it will definitely stain! We lined a box with bin bags so that they could oxidize safely!

We then cut off the string and elastic bands and hung them up to let any green patches that hadn't oxidized properly turn blue. This only took about 10 minutes.

After having oxidized properly we then popped them on a 20 degree wash with a mild non bio detergent and let them dry over night.

The next day we cut and hemmed them so they were the right length (just brushing the floor) and we hung them!

Voila! They look so pretty with the light shining through them :) so pleased with the result!
