a 20 is a 20,. make it go boom!

so maybe been a while since I read the rules and maybe I am forgetting stuff but... isn't a nat 20 like saying 'you did an extra specially epic good job at the task' Not 'suddenly your pen that u were trying to sign your name has turned into a mega-nuclear bomb and turned the entire country into atoms' - cuz if that IS the new way the dice rolls work, doing ANY task would be a massive fucking risk.. ANYTIME u had to roll a d20 u have 5% chance of destroying all life.

That's more a Nat 1 kind of result, catastrophic failure. A Nat 20 is a Crit Success, so I'd probably say Worf phasers a nice clean passageway through the rubble with minimal time and no risk of collapse.

As is often the case in gaming comics, Worf just announces what he's doing and rolls without specifying what's being rolled. If the phaser is being treated as an attack, a natural 20 would be a critical hit in D&D, though that's just double damage to the target. But if it's a skill check, true. D&D 5E has no special rules for a natural 20 on those.

wait? he fires first THEN rolls nat20?

i dont think thats the correct order....

Hitting the wall was probably a foregone conclusion. I think the roll was just to determine how well it worked. Not that this is exactly how a natural 20 in D&D works under normal rules regardless, but I'm rules-lawyering a joke at this point.

It's strong and bitter. Just like Worf.

And here i thought phasers worked exactly how the plot needed them to.

My favorite is even with the pistol grip ones the beam just comes out at any old angle to hit whoever it's supposed to.

Could have hit a gas pocket too - common threat for miners, actually.

Or with all the timeline and dimension crossing, a pocket of naquadria.

Neither does a Nat 20 roll. It's not a magnitude thing!

It the notification to the DM that’s flavor text must be added

or *do* they? well that and.... what if the dm says they do?

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

If I say I want to non-lethally slap someone, and I roll a 20 and the DM says I just slapped the dude's head off and it exploded like a melon... Well I won't be happy

If the DM and the players do not agree on a set of rules to play by you are not playing DnD, you are playing USA.

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

hmmm.... fair enough. i concede this point. it's definitely better for everybody to agree on how to play the game.
