Use big yarn and big hooks. Take your time. It takes practice to be able to keep the stitches the same tension.

Make sure you know how to finish before you start a scarf. My friend ended up with a 9' scarf waiting for her gramma to show her how.

Crochet you use one hook, slide a loop on and off for each stitch. Knitting you use two needles, keep an entire row of loops on them.
