I am the DM for my group who is exploring a run down mansion. There are broken stairs leading upstairs, and being the naive DM thought they would just not go upstairs because it would be difficult. Everyone manages to get to the second floor and they start exploring the other bedrooms. The sorcerer casts a spell behind the dwarven monk, who then believes he just made fire come from his body. Many rooms and hijinks later they make it back to the stairs and head back down. Sometimes the best stories can come from unplanned events. Edit: Unexpected front page is unexpected!!! One of the things I have as a DM is a wealth of arbitrary maps. You never know when a random bar will become a plot point or fight scene.

In my experience its best to have a backup plan, but just go with it. The energy that is created by a group will never equal your ideas.

For me it's physical for the DM, and I explain what they see and how big the room or area is, if they want to have a cartographer (1)
