Yeah that's another insanity that became standard: everyone excepts absolutely maximum effort, efficiency, results, ... for a minimum wage, and so many jobs are just permanently minimum wage.
Look, I was junior enlisted. I know both that I can work at a wildly unsustainable pace, and I also know that the only reward for burning myself out is more work. Fuck that noise. I'm going to "validate the process" and "verify systems prior to implementation" for at least 60% of the week.
I worked at a Wendy's as a teen. First real job. I was getting burned out, b/c high school full time and working 35+ hrs in addition. I was sluggish one day. Manager says, "pick up the pace". I told them I was tired. I got called in b/c someone else called in, and I previously closed last night. She said "I don't want to hear excuses. You're one of our best workers. Now get to it." That was the moment I realized good workers got whipped harder. Bad workers got to call in and take a day off.
They also didn't show his reward: no pay raise, a speech about how times are hard and how he needs to be a team player. The boss had to cut his own raise to just 15% this year (not including his bonus) and we're all making sacrifices.
