some additional context.... most of these marriages are between 17 and 18 year olds expecting children and the 18 year old is usually either part of the army or navy... so marriage does add some protection to the girl/woman here.... BUT ....and that's a BIG BUT... while that is the norm... there are exceptions to this norm... and yes they are just exploiting what you expect the GOP members to exploit...

The age of consent varies by state - it ranges from 16 to 18 with 16 being the most common. And some (but not all) states have a "close in age" exemption (sometimes called a Romeo and Juliet clause) which says that if the older party is no more than [X] years older (think 5 is he most common) it's okay - the intent is not to screw over the 16 year old guy with a 15 year old girlfriend. And all states say that anyone under the age of 12 can't give consent.

Part 2 - it's worth noting that some of those laws set the age of consent for same sex relationships at a higher level. And if the older party is in a position of power (teacher, police officer, etc) the age of consent is higher as well.

In Missouri during the 1990s, the legislature rewrite the criminal statutes and inadvertently left out beasteality.

Animal husbandry is full of very gross fluids and actions, and 'there has to be a better way!' sounds legit but it really isn't. If the animals would breed themselves we wouldn't be helping.

The relative normalcy is a requirement for it to stay legal because most people are vehemently opposed to child molestation. Thus, Republicans have to dress it up a bit in tradition or w/e to keep ordinary people who don't pay much attention from thinking too hard about it.

Bible(the very book they thump everyone with) CLEARLY STATES multiple examples where abortion is both accepted AND the preferred outcome, AND states, again, MULTIPLE Times, that the 'fetus' is NOT A CHILD until it takes it's FIRST BREATH OUTSIDE THE MOTHERS WOMB. And unlike SO MANY OTHER FUCKING THINGS in the bible, these are 2 examples where it does NOT contradict itself multiple fucking times.

Conflating these is so frustrating. Church and state marriages serve completely different purposes .. they just usually happen at the same time.
They have completely separate requirements (baptism + confirmation vs. certificate), legitimacy (per religion vs. per state). Different benefits (holy procreation! vs. tax/property).
States have very objective requirements (e.g. not already married, age, etc).
Churches have religious ones (married by a priest/in a Catholic Church, etc.). (Cont…)

You can get married in a church (hey Mormons!) without asking the state, but that marriage won’t count for privilege in a court of law (or criminals would just marry everyone and nobody could testify against them).
You can get married in a courthouse (hi tons of people!) without any religion giving two hollers (it’s not like you plan on walking up and asking to take communion, it’s not museum ticket reciprocity).
