1/2 I don't know how he normally moves, but some styles keep a light front foot, but it was his timing that caught him and he was good at
2/2 making the kick smooth, fast and direct so the other guy couldn't really react.

Kickboxing has an advantage over boxing because boxers tend to put all they weight into the lead foot when striking, plus you know options.
Thats not saying hand striking < Kicking.. Just if your expecting only to have hands thrown and you get kicked in the knee your going down.
