Here’s where it started. I bought a 1986 chevette with a couple friends with the goal of building a car for the 24 hours of lemons. (Like Le Mans, but for shitty cars). It was gloriously terrible and had a stellar 0-60 time of 24 seconds. The brakes hardly worked, and the seatbelts didn’t actually lock up. Super safe!

Naturally, step one was making it faster. I made a custom exhaust manifold to allow the mounting of a Subaru turbo.

I had a $20 4 barrel carburetor that I had sitting around so I decided to use that upstream of the turbo rather than modifying a smaller carburetor to run downstream of the turbo. The first iteration of this setup took about a day to make and increased power significantly. It brought the 0-60 time into the 7 second range. There was some tweaking and modifying done to increase power, and durability, but it’s not worth diving into.

Showing off at a local cars and coffee meet. The roof rack came off of my brother’s montero. We thought It looked funny so we threw it on.

It happened to win an award for “most unique car” at the show. Here it is posing with the trophy

It turns out that when you more than double the power of a car things like to break. “No worries, I’ll just throw a stronger clutch in.”

See that pile of black stuff in the corner? That’s clutch.

Shortly after fixing that issue the engine decided that it wasn’t happy either. I rebuilt the engine, and then it decided to melt a piston shortly after. I repeated this process 2 more times. Settling for less power was no option

I eventually got sick of rebuilding chevette engines, so I pulled it out in search for something better.

I searched Craigslist and Facebook for a while until I came across this piece of art. It’s the engine and transmission from a 1979 Volvo 240. Highly sought after as the epitome of racing performance... (heavy sarcasm)
I got it for free, so I can’t really complain.

The 1979 Volvo engine had a terrible k-jet fuel injection system that I didn’t want to mess with, so I bought a newer Volvo engine. This one was from a 1991 Volvo (still bolts right up to the 1979 transmission)

I don’t have any pictures of the instillation process, but it basically involved making engine mounts, a trans brace, and bashing the firewall and transmission tunnel unit everything fit. Simple

Next step: turbocharging! Everything is better with boost.

The complete manifold bolted to the engine

With turbo bolted on.

Started the intake plumbing and installed a slight larger turbo. The intercooler is from Subaru wed and the turbo is from a 2015 STI.

Finished the intake plumbing.

Don’t really have a good place to put it, so here will work. The engine management is done with a customs Megasquirt ecu. It’s fully tunable and customizable. I had a lot of headache setting it up, but now that it’s working I love it.

Next was making a template for a driveshaft that connects a Volvo transmission to a chevette rear axle. I used driveshafts from both and some exhaust tubing to make something the right size.

I took that template to a driveshaft shop and they made me this shiny new one that’s exactly what I needed.

The next step was to start bracing the chassis and preparing it for a roll cage. I started by bracing the length of the car with 2”x4” steel tubing.

Cont. you can also see the holes in the floor from where it rusted through

New floor pans going in.

Instant roll cage! Didn’t take any pictures of the process. Sorry

Fancy new racing seat. It cost more than the car itself (not saying much tbh)

Finally time to upgrade the brakes. Custom hubs and brackets were made to use bmw brakes.

Almost driving!

Finally ready for a drive.

This was its first time moving under its own power in many months.

Made it to work even!

Took it to a friend that has a car scale. It only weighs 2171 lbs. that means that it only need 310 hp to have the same power to weight ratio as a corvette. (Easy to do with this engine btw)

Got a new hood from the junkyard because I was tired of the huge hole in the old one. The brown paint goes nicely with the rust!

Had to cut a small hole for the turbo to peek out of.

This is going to be the next step. Volvo transmissions are known to be incredibly weak while their engines can hold up to a remarkable amount of abuse. This is a 5 speed transmission from a foxbody mustang, they’re much stronger and you can get an adapter kit to bolt it to a Volvo transmission.

I’m also going to replace the rear axle with the independent rear suspension from a Miata with a limited slip differential. I hope to swap the front suspension over too.

First drive when we originally turbocharged it: https://youtu.be/4gAJIjO_7E4

Having fun with the exhaust and the Volvo engine: https://youtu.be/1Ss7gVAAQ4c

Here’s the website for the greatest racing series in the world if you’re interested. https://24hoursoflemons.com/

I’ve owned the car for just under 2 years and have been putting actual effort into it for about 1 year. It’s been a great project and it should be ready to race this summer.

FP edit: send race cars!

Woot*2!

I love the 24 hours of LeMons and the GRM, grassrootsmotorsports, challenges and they are some of my favourite content to read online. A+

This time on Roadkill: We put too much power into a 1986 Chevette and end up with a Mazda Miata!

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Username is relevant, my friend had an NA Miata that my friends and I all loved, until he totaled it. Take care of your friend my friend.

My brother and I have wanted to do a 24 hours of lemons car so bad! Tempted

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

And thanks for the inspiration @OP

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That was a fun read! Thanks guy!

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So you press the gas and it goes vroom? (I have no idea how cars work...)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Yes, that’s the gist of it.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Everybody wants a vette

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You gotta put the roof rack back on and add a crude looking external rollcage

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Needs an old school POWER BULGE over the turbo.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

This looks fun. I'm not a car person but I would go along for the ride

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's Roadkill levels of butchery! I love it! Moar !

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So, how much over $500 did you go?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Having grown up with Volvo 240's, I can tell you that engine is probably going to outlast you... and the car! ;) Good work!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Pleasantly surprised to see a Redblock on FP. My 240 - and the volvo M40 and AW70 are strong transmissions.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm still mad I didn't get a chance to buy a super clean beige 240 for $500 a few months back

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

$500 240 I bought a few months back (plus $200 for aluminum wheels)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So.... more info on the red rex?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I immediately scrolled down in search a post about it too

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It’s broken. That’s all there really is to say about it.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I thought the idea of Lemons is that you build the car for about $500. Guessing that went out of the window here.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Safety equipment doesn’t count towards that limit. If you account for that it’s actually really close.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I *think* it's in the rules that if you sell off seats and other bits from your car, those sales count towards lowering the price.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

@op THIS was a great post. I subscribed to you so I better see updates!

8 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 0

Thank you! I’ll definitely post updates as I make progress.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Seconded @OP !

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fucking awesome. Even more awesome is sneaky sneak FD in background. More on that please! :D

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Spoiler alert. It’s broken

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh no!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm made an upvote!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Too lat to Chang she title. This took way too long to make

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fucking typos. Should have used a computer

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So do you need a like, apprentice? This is awesome.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Dude, I’m 18. Just get a welder and start watching how-to videos on YouTube.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'd would have more issues with finding how to hook different gearboxes to different cars.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

For the least headache you just use the gearbox that goes with the engine. Making mounts is easy, you just need a welder and a drill.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Over here in England most of the fun is fitting engines into places they barely fit not just fucking cutting up the thing

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I prefer making a car that’s cheap and fun to drive, but that’s just me

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The idea is that it's not supposed to be obvious you've done anything to it until you either see the cover up or get thrashed by it

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm surprised, I thought there was a $500 limit for total investment.

8 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 2

Just gotta bribe the inspection guys :)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You bribe the judges to allow more expensive mods haha

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

*cough* roadkill lol

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Lots of ways to get around it. But safety equipment like a cage, seats, brakes, none of that counts towards the total.

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Yeah the engine, transmission, BMW brakes. Those are all used things, but what about that custom driveshaft?

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Looks like you can go over $500 but you lose laps every $10 over budget

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Driveshaft was only $200. You’re allowed to sell parts from the car to add to the $500 limit. They also don’t care what you do to a chevette

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I've always wondered how people managed a $500 budget. I didn't know you could sell parts to get part of that $500 back

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yup. I managed to sell the original engine and trans for $200, so that pretty much covered my cost

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is the absolute worst monstrosity I’ve ever seen on wheels... and you started with a Chevette? Please post more of this glorious beast.

8 years ago | Likes 90 Dislikes 0

First car was a used ‘85 Chevette. It lasted 20 years, drove me cross-country more than once, and only quit when some jackass hit it. RIP :(

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It didn’t rust out from underneath you? All the ones up here with the exception of the GM museum, are rust dust.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's rear wheel drive :)

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You’d be surprised, making a front wheel rear wheel is harder than it looks. Especially in an older economy car. @op correct w/ custom shaft

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Chevettes are rwd from the factory. Custom driveshaft was to mate a Volvo trans to a chevette axle

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Very cool! I didn’t know they were RWD stock..

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yup! That's pretty much why I bought it. I wanted something light, rwd, manual, and cheap.
