We'll hide here until we can surrender.

Note to self: remember where the best castles are when the zombie apocalypse comes.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not bad. Throw in the woodlands for free and I'll take it.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

wonder what this would cost to build today.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

where did they get the water for the moat?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No water needed.

If a house is a 'machine for living in' (machine-a-habiter), a fortress is a machine for killing.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Une belle machine-a-tuer.

9 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Give me 10 good men and I’ll impregnate the bitch.

These are the types of things i wish i could do in Total War. I want to lay siege to historically perfect castles and fortresses.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This would be an excellent FPS map

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'll have two, please.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cool! I wonder if any battles happened there

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is the most castley castle I've ever seen.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Great photos. Thanks for sharing.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Giant Paintball battle, anyone?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Isnt this a warthunder map?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Zombies? Zombies.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Give me 25 ninjas and I'll take this shit by midnight

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fun Fact: The most common way Ninjas infiltrated enemy castles was to get hired on as servants.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

C'est vauban qui l'a faite?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

c'est moyenâgeux...vauban est bien plus recent

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes je suis allé voir. C'est bien avant vauban. Mais il a quand même fait qques modifs ^^

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

That looks like a nightmare to siege.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

seige is easy. It's a nightmare to storm.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Agreed. These are the types of things i wish i could do in Total War. I want historically perfect castles and fortresses.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

That was the general idea behind it's design

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

What Era is this from?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

16th century http://www.forteresse-salses.fr/en/

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Merci

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Problem is that while a indenture moat works well against mass troop movement. It's absolutely fucked for siege warfare. --->

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Well, it's still standing, as Elton John, while you are seated and commenting on imgur. (obviously I'm french, defneding my forteresse).

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

"Indenture moat"? What's that?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

With that set up an enemy's trebuchet/catapults etc would have an much easier time lobbing rocks and diseased carcasses over your walls

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Well so walls are also useless. As are fortresses by that logic.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This looks like 15th-16th century design.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

that's like saying ballistic vests are useless against claymore. What's the point?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This is designed to defeat gunpowder artillery. The glacis and ditch stop the inner wall from being battered down. 1

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

The inner wall is defended from the corner bastions. This is an early star fort, not a crappy medival castle.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

A great demonstration that there is a difference between a castle and a fortress.

9 years ago | Likes 219 Dislikes 1

I didn't even know they had an Oriental Sales department in France!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Castle and palace, right? I guess a fortress would just be a military building not intended to be kings quarters.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Yeah I think that's what they meant. Castles were definitely built with battle in mind. Palaces, not so much.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think the difference is that castles are some rich dude's private fortified home, while fortresses are public (like they belong to the /1

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

city, and the local fighting forces use them for the city's defense). So this could be either a castle or a fortress, depending on usage. /2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That was definitely a military fortress. Been there. Visited it. Genius architecture and defence against the baddies!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Weren't castles originally built as defensible fortresses?

9 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 0

Castles WERE originally built as defensible fortresses. Later on, after the cannon ball, palaces were then commonly referred to as castles

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

After the development of canon balls, gun powder and guns, castles and plate armor were of little protection.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They are only models. (Shh)

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

A castle is supposed to be the fortified residence of the local lord. A Fortress is a fortified location

9 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 0

All castles are fortresses, not all fortresses are castles

9 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 1

Squares and rectangles, got it.

9 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Pretty much

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Although there are some buildings that are named "___ Castle", but they're just castle-styled mansions.
