Oki C5750 color laser , bought it used. Has worked for 9 years while i had it. Replaced toner kit once. No problems at all. It is a buisness printer. One should buy buisness printers. And if you don't specifically need to print close-to-photo quality pics at home, you don't really need ink printers.

Last week, I had to fill out a form, sign it, and scan it to return via email i.e the only reason I even own a printer. My PC listed it as offline even though it was on and seemingly working. Turns out those motherfuckers at HP pushed an update that requires sign in with their app to even attempt basic functions like scanning. HP absolutely should burn in hell.

It is a deal with the devil. The printers themselves are unsustainably cheap to purchase. The business model for HP is to make the profits selling the Ink. The cheaper the printer, the more this applies. You have to do the research on total cost of ownership based on how much you plan to use your printer.

I worked for hp printers once as a telemarketer...and well it was the worst job I've ever had but one thing I learn is they make all their money from ink. So much so that they sell the printers for a lost then make it all back up over the years of selling ink they make for $10 max and selling from$100 and up.

Last printer I bought was a Brother Laser with Duplex mode and wifi. Knockoff cartridges work fine (though it complains). Can recommend.

My monochrome Brother laser printer does its job. Only needs paper and an occasional replacement of the toner cartridge. No subscriptions, no cloud services, no "cleaning cycles" pissing away ink before I can use it.

I had an Epson. They finally admitted that it wouldn't print black and white without color cartridges. I told them to tell whomever that I would be replacing their printer and never buying another Epson product. Went with a Canon Pixma 492.

I have a several decade old HP Laserjet, still works great, doesn't require an internet connection or anything fancy, runs on 3rd party ink just fine. I plan to keep fixing it and using it until I'm dead.

They are with ease the best printers here in germany. Canon, Epson or, god forgive, Brother are producing non-working crap, but *every* HP printer we had in the last 14 years in our company was always the best printer we had and as lasting for years.

This is a function of HP Instant Ink. You subscribe to an online service that monitors the number of pages you print and charges you a monthly sub to send you ink in the mail. If your subscription expires, the printer will not print until you remove it from your HP Account (or cancel the plan). Your printer also won't print if it's enrolled but your wifi goes down (since it can't talk to the pagecount server). You also can't put regular cartridges in while enrolled.

I had an HP printer until recently. Limited USB ports on the computer I was using, so only plugged in the printer when I actually had to print something. Got an email from HP saying that my printer is required to be always online and either I connect it within x days or it gets disabled. So I don't use HP anymore. I'm sure I probably had a free trial of Instant Ink or something but I hadn't even gone through the first ink cartridges I got for the thing.

You don't have to use the Instant Ink. It's an optional feature. You can skip enrolling at initial setup or remove it from being enrolled at any point. It just works that way while you're signed up.

The ink cartridges they ship you as part of your subscription have chips on them, to check ink levels, so they can ship you out ink before it runs out. They can also effectively soft brick your printer as well. Especially if you use third party ink cartridges.
