Actually.. everyone has no gender until about the 7th week of development when either the presence of SRY triggers male development, or 1/2
SuddenlySeymour
SRY = Sex Determining region of the Y chromosome, for any non-biologists that might happen to be on imgur :)
MajorAidan
You have a sex as soon as you are conceived, the gametes require a sex chromosome to function.
the absence of SRY triggers female development. Men have nipples because they are formed prior to the 7th week. Also.. biologically 2/3
Speaking.. men also have nipples due to the ability to lactate.. but that's a whole different conversation.

The law on suicide is still on the books. The punishment is possibly life imprisonment (consistent with hanging not being a punishment /1
/2 anymore) however no one has been charged with this in decades as we have become more understanding towards mental health.
JoJoSapiens
That isn't true, suicide was legalised in the UK in 1961. The same law made assisting someone else's suicide a crime, however.
keksitse
Okay so how many of these are full bogus?

The priest one is a lie. They'll call the cops. Sometimes they intervene if you're suicidal or threatening to hurt others too.

I find the fact about the museums hard to believe? I'm not sure if that's true anymore, maybe 20 years ago or something.
Mavgurian
If every stuffed "biggest cow/sheep/... of OK/TX/..." counts as a museum ...
Well, I looked it up and it seems it is true! At least in 2014.
WherePoetryComesToDie
For several fortuitous reasons, that fact is absolutely true. Even tiny towns have at least one museum, but they all don't have McDs/SBs.
Morgoroth37
My tiny town has no museums and two McDonalds....
AssistedLivingDracula
I've never been to a museum and looked outside and seen another museum.. I could just be uncultured though.
Out of curiosity, where do you live?
Seattle. My Starbucks radar is probably much stronger than most.
TheSadCafe
We have a Starbucks in one of our local grocery stores. In the parking lot of that grocery store: another Starbucks.
Yeah I wonder what they count as museums and if they count certain buildings in universities as museums. This would mean even small towns
would have to have 2-3 museums.
Many small towns have at least one museum (local history), but they don't all have even one McDs/SBs (not enough pop. density).
TheDarkNerd
It makes sense. There are plenty of museums in the US. There are not that many museums hosted inside Starbucks or McDonalds.
gopms
Just about every university has a handful of museums. No one ever goes to them but they are there.
Kalriostraz
It's true on a technicality, because it's based on what the government calls a museum for tax and other reasons, not the layman 1/2
definition. Roughly half of them are historical societies and historical sites, not Smithsonian-esque museums. 2/2
MoreDonutsPerDonut
There are a lot of really small, really obscure museums
StressedOut
I can certainly believe that, but most of them are surrounded by like 3 or 4 Starbucks.
BreadyStinellis
We have a stuffed squirrel museum in the basement of a funeral home near me.
A911owner
Yeah, near me there's a puppet museum and a museum of glass. I've never been to either.
Haha those sound interesting! This fact makes me want to go out and visit more museums since there's so many to see!
Go to both and report back
That's what I was thinking. Many small rural towns in the US have tiny museums regarding a local phenomenon or town history.
Utmost
tzxAzrael
anyone else thibk that museums one is bs?
TheGist
It's mostly true http://www.snopes.com/politics/business/usmuseums.asp It includes more than strictly "museums," like aquariums.
Xen300
It can't possibly be true. There are towns with no museums but at least 1 branch of McDonalds. Think of the resulting ratios in other towns.
128Gigabytes
Well look it up, from what I can tell it seems to be true by about 10,000
TheGist has the link above. It's true on a governmental technicality, because they count things not strictly "museums" in the tally.
lol, fuck. well yea, if you include "historical houses and sites" then sure. that would be like counting grocery stores as a McDonalds.

I remember doing Terry fox runs throughout elementary school and middle school here in Alberta

I remember always running that day because of the school's events we would hold. He's very important to us

In Saskatchewan we would celebrate him, raise money, and do a Terry Fox walk for the last hour or so of the school day. He was amazing.
So in other words, not a holiday.

Here in Canada Catholic Law cannot hide confessions from the law. If someone confesses the courts have full right to ask the priest what 1/2
the accused said, if they refuse they can be charged with obstruction of justice. 2/3

If this were to occur, they may very well fly the priest to the Vatican...

Shame that, by and large, we don't recycle our wasted food in America.

We don't in France either. This chart is wrong.

Shame also that someone can eat food from our trash and sue us for getting sick so why take the chance and donate it?

I would assume that if there was a legal impetuous to donate, there would also be legal protections to donate-rs.
I'm sure there is but vegas throws out tons of food a day though I'm sure it's not considered safe after being in a buffet for x/time.
BigJB
Especially considering most food thrown out barely hits the 'best before' date and is nowhere near going bad.
TheFrenchGirl
Most of the time it's sold 50% of the price on the last day or the day before. I buy it everytime I can and freeze it. It save lot of €.
Here in US that's if it makes it to shelves. Lots of times farmers just trash it because its not appeasing visual quality, easier to trash.
Which is just sad that at the point fiscally instead of even selling for feed it's just thrown away
OSCgal
Doesn't a lot of "ugly" produce end up processed or canned instead? Because then looks don't matter.
iwantthepoints
False, if you ever volunteer at a food shelter youll see the tons and tons of food donated by markets that's up to a year past it's sell by.
Notice the qualifier "by and large"... obviously not all food is wasted. But the statement is still not false
Yes in some cases. But i know for a fact that large companies, like CVS, pull food off the shelves up to a month BEFORE expiration, and
Require it to be destroyed before being thrown away. E.g. - douse it in bleach. I used to work there and had to do it many times.

Moving to Chicago from Seattle this was hard to deal with. No one in Chicago recycles.
I think bottled water needs to stop and our store doesn't recycle our plastic bottles from our pharmacy.
GerhardRammelhausen
Tell that to the people of Flint
Bottled water has its uses in that case but how much of the trash from that makes up the total landfill & ocean waste from plastic bottles?
I see your point. The problem is with all the disposable bottles. Like, at my job, we have bottle fillers, 2 on each floor, so we can 1/2
fill reusable bottles whenever we want. And you can buy filtered water in big (reusable) jugs. 2/2
Yeah, a lot of college campuses are going to on site filters in all buildings so that everyone can bring reusable bottles.
StNickCage
Oh my God I know I got so pissed when I read that
inkdrocket
When I first heard that you dont recycle bottles and cans of soda I was shocked. Over here, you get automated machines that recycle them 1/2
2/2 at supermarkets. You get .40€ from huge bottles and 0.15€ from cans. Even if its added to the price, its still better than trash.
3/2 Plus it would give poor or homeless actual reason to clean bottles. Main reason why we have people collecting bottles at festivals.
humptyblargh
It's not every state, but we have those. We also do have recycling centers that buy aluminum and glass containers, almost everywhere.
PPontiac
actually the imge is neither wrong nor correct, they can't throw away edible food but they keep it on the shelves until expiration date -->
--> at wich point they throw it out , open the packages and pour bleach on it so the people in need can't come and salvage it despite -->
--> the fact that food is oft times still edible after it expires.
brobinson2001
We DO have the Harvester's program in some places. Restaurants put cancelled orders into their cooler, and homeless shelters freeze them 1/2
And when a shelter person gets an apt, they stock them up on stuff that just needs nuked/put in the microwave for a few minutes.
NotTheMamaNotTheMama
That is very nice!
HanFuckingSolo
In Germany you have small bins that you have to separate food, trash, and recyclables. If it doesn't fit you compost it at your home
Tommy62222
I used to work in a grocery store in Oklahoma. We have our slightly bruised produce and day old donuts and the like to a local shelter. 1/2
Then the health department made us stop. So into the trash it went. Dumb.
Feanor19
I read that like 60% of our food is waste. That does sound about right sadly. From the peeps I know and working food service for 12 years
My work says it donates their excess every night. I'm a different department but work alongside them and that's bullshit. Goes in the trash
chila765
Actually the one about confessing murder to a priest is no longer true, it used to be, but now, by law, they have to go to law enforcement.
danstr
I swear I was about to do this just for fun, ugh.
flyingmonsters
that's not even funny as a joke
CatsIsTheAnswer
Depends on the country. Here in Italy a confessional secret qualifies as professional secret (the one doctors and lawyers get)
pancrazio
BS. They may jail priests if they don't collaborate with police, but if they reveal what they have been told they get excommunication
GoodGameYoungLad
I don't think it's that easy I believe the confession is considered privileged information
Non sequitur. They can consider confession as they wish, priest are still required to keep the secret if they wish to remain priests.
Amen
AMigratingCoconut
No they don't. Google "Canon Law 983.1" and it should bring you to the relevant (Code of Canon Law) section of Vatican City's official site.
I think they can still insist the penitent turn themselves in or tell the police "investigate this man" But they can't directly say anything
No they cant say investigate anyone, thats a breach of the seal
ThatGuySev
If it is a Catholic priest, they are expected by the church to go to prison, rather telling anyone what you have confessed
kollette88
Yeah, there's the whole "sacramental seal of secrecy". The priests can't talk about sins outside of confession without severe penalty.
*"Seal of Confession"
They've been referring to it as a "sacramental seal" in my theology class and in the textbook. I've heard both.
HeroOfCanton1
Catholic priest are instructed to go to jail and not give up any info on penalty of exominiction and mortal sin, ie hell
*excommunication (sorry)
That's correct
Falos
Ah, this sounds like the exact nature of it. I hope most courts aren't dicks about it. The booth only exists because of absolute confidence.
Gadvance
Law>Religion
one could argue other way around. Man writes laws, God reveals truth and divine law. It is why so many are willing to die for faith.
They can request it, probably compel it with several laws, but if priests are known(?) to be uncooperative, to always "contempt", why bother
porrages
From the side of law enforcement? Sure. Catechism 2490 and 2491 have different rules about breaking the seal of confession, however.
achillesrage
Absolutely false. Murder laws are state by state, and at least in New York & Colorado, clergy cannot be forced to disclose a confession.
bigger66
a priest is not allowed to reveal any confession to anyone. THis also applies to lay people that accidentally overhear a confession.
SmolTenk
Depends. In germany its still true. Even if they learn about someone planning to commit a crime.
Christx30
If it can save a life, it'd be worth it.

this is not true. a priest cannot reveal any confession.
jval
There is a Priest-Penitent privilege, but there are different exceptions in different states.
no priest is going to do this becuase it is still means for excommunication.
greenmenfrommars
I imagine it depends upon the country. In the U.K. at least, priest-penitent privilege is not protected by law.
RedIronCrown
As far as I know confessions to a priest are still privileged and they can't be compelled to testify.
yep
that's not true at all. any sin confessed cannot be told to any one even the police. it's an unchanged law
AvidLebon
There was an episode of Forensic Files where the priest anonymously told the police, they traced it to the priest, and he had to tell who.
So in a court of law, priests have been forced to tell what they know about a murder if the police know they have information.
The US the court system cannot force the priest to say anything if he did not disclose it to the police first.
He had disclosed it in the anon letter, and then was court ordered to tell everything else.
also i looked up that episode. it was the bishop himself who had committed the murders. it didn't say that he confessed them and that
priest told the police,
That must be a different ep. This one a man told the priest in the confessional, and the priest wrote an anon letter about that man. not him
Canadoug
Shit. Are you sure? I think I've made a huge mistake....
they are lying. anything you say will not be told to anyone
bambulina
Yeah I was gonna say, I don't think the gov't gives a frick about "Catholic Law"
yeah they do. it has been respected, but in more recent years some countries are trying to force the priest to give up the info.
Relicanth
If they don't know that you know, they can't compel testimony. It isn't a crime to know somebody committed a murder without being involved.
No they don't, the seal of confession is unbreakable.
kiruwa
It's true in most of the first world.

It's still true. You can even confess a crime to a lawyer and they can't tell the police. it changes if you say you intend to commit a crime
ThatShiftyMonkey
Depends on the country's laws. I believe the US doesn't require it for past murders, but does for imminent ones.
No one in the US is required to turn someone in for murder.
*in most states.
no priest is going to give information on what is confessed though
I think the catholic church tells the priests that they're supposed to report it if someone says they're going to kill someone.
it would have to be an anonymous tip for a future event, but if the act is already done he cannot say anything.
ipostwhatyouseeabove
"Going to kill someone" is not a confession. You don't say what you're going to do at a confession, it's what you did that you tell.
Akarlath
he can report it, free will being what it is. however he is automatically excommunicated.
WithPride
Hahaha, not for everybody.
llortamai
Pedophilia is still A-OK though. Heck, they'll even help you find a new job in another town! Rinse and repeat.
Bravacado
Omg! A Catholic pedophilia joke! Tell another. Please.
PeterPanLives
I'm not sure it was a joke. Isn't this a real problem? Honest question.
JonathanSwiftProbablyInventedBabybackRibs
One study has been done, showing that sexual crime rates in the Catholic church are the same as rates in Protestant churches (US.) 1/2
Unfortunately, that study was sponsored by the US Council of Bishops (Catholic.) I don't know of any other similar studies.
Pedophilia is a problem ANYWHERE. People assume every priest is a pedophile and all other priests are okay with it, which they clearly arent
They're just as horrified by it. Celibacy doesn't make you automatically gun for children. You can also quit the priesthood if it's too much.
Sorry, had a friend who was molested. Didn't mean to hurt your feelings.
And yes, the molester is working with kids in another town, thanks to the church. But hey, sorry for the "joke"
You didn't hurt my feelings. Truly sorry that happened to your friend. But it's a person who committed the crime, not the church. 1/2
Yes, and the church helped him move to another church. The protected a pedo rather than the victim. He'll do it again, and they'll move him.
2/2 The church has done amazing things. It's not just that priest that went free. Justice is not always served outside the church.
xkr73
Besides, if you're confessing, you have to do penance to be absolved of your sins - most priests make the penance"confess to police"
Oh man, I have to ask my dad about this. He works for the local diocese & is best friends with one of the priests. (We're not Catholic.)
Smitsu
Can't I just retake the holy land instead?
DarthFutuza
What will you do with it after you retake it?
no, that is not true at all. they can try to give you council to turn yourself in, but they cannot force you to turn yourself in.
Thank you for disagreeing - the resultant debate has given me quite a bit to think on.
like what?
LooseyGooseyBrett
Priests can't force you to do anything you don't want; that is, unless you are a young boy.
not sure how that is relevant to what i posted
Bullkholtz

because it is irrelevant to this conversation. it is a joke in poor taste
nightrideFM
They're not forcing you to.. if you want to be forgiven, you'll have to do what they think is best.
lostsemicolon
Incorrect. You are absolved of your sins when the words of absolution are spoken. Completing penance isn't part of that.
You used to have to do penance first and then come back to get absolution. Now it's flipped, but penance is still a necessary part of the
waitwasthatreal
Their cannot withhold penance on the requirement of telling someone else your sins. So no, they can't do that
no all that is required is to have sorrow for sins, and you can be absolved. it is not penance first than absolution is given.
It used to be, but now absolution is first and penance is to be completed later.
flyingdutchfrenchman
I'd guess that "catholic laws" don't mean jack shit in reality. If the priest is required by law to snitch, he has to, otherwise he doesn't.
any catholic priest is not going to give up sins confessed
Yeah but I'm just saying, its irrelevant to the country's law wether catholic law told him to or not. At least here in laic countries.
That's not true at all. In civil law there is "priest-penitent privilege" protecting them
I guess we have to define which country we're actually talking about then.

The law on suicide is still on the books. The punishment is possibly life imprisonment (consistent with hanging not being a punishment /1

Mavgurian
If every stuffed "biggest cow/sheep/... of OK/TX/..." counts as a museum ...
theabbster
Well, I looked it up and it seems it is true! At least in 2014.
WherePoetryComesToDie
For several fortuitous reasons, that fact is absolutely true. Even tiny towns have at least one museum, but they all don't have McDs/SBs.
Morgoroth37
My tiny town has no museums and two McDonalds....
AssistedLivingDracula
I've never been to a museum and looked outside and seen another museum.. I could just be uncultured though.

Seattle. My Starbucks radar is probably much stronger than most.
TheSadCafe
We have a Starbucks in one of our local grocery stores. In the parking lot of that grocery store: another Starbucks.
Totallynotfakingit
Yeah I wonder what they count as museums and if they count certain buildings in universities as museums. This would mean even small towns
Totallynotfakingit
would have to have 2-3 museums.
WherePoetryComesToDie
Many small towns have at least one museum (local history), but they don't all have even one McDs/SBs (not enough pop. density).
TheDarkNerd
It makes sense. There are plenty of museums in the US. There are not that many museums hosted inside Starbucks or McDonalds.
gopms
Just about every university has a handful of museums. No one ever goes to them but they are there.
Kalriostraz
It's true on a technicality, because it's based on what the government calls a museum for tax and other reasons, not the layman 1/2
Kalriostraz
definition. Roughly half of them are historical societies and historical sites, not Smithsonian-esque museums. 2/2

TheGist
It's mostly true http://www.snopes.com/politics/business/usmuseums.asp It includes more than strictly "museums," like aquariums.

It can't possibly be true. There are towns with no museums but at least 1 branch of McDonalds. Think of the resulting ratios in other towns.
128Gigabytes
Well look it up, from what I can tell it seems to be true by about 10,000
Kalriostraz
TheGist has the link above. It's true on a governmental technicality, because they count things not strictly "museums" in the tally.
tzxAzrael
lol, fuck. well yea, if you include "historical houses and sites" then sure. that would be like counting grocery stores as a McDonalds.

Quebec here. The annual 42 minute run at my high school is what got me into running. One year I was like screw it, not gonna walk any of it.
TheUninspiredHetalian
Can confirm. One year, we threw pies at teachers after the Terry Fox run. I nailed my math teacher in the face.

Where are you from?! I've done something similar...

At Rollins College in Orlando, FL they have a day called Fox day. They announce it by surprising them with a fox sculpture on the lawn 1/2

Then they provide buses out to the beach for the day where everyone gets shit faced.

Yep...school age kids get pledges and do the Terry Fox Run and all the $ goes to cancer research.

I grew up in a Canadian community in the middle east, and every year we'd hold a Terry Fox Day Marathon. I had assumed he was world famous.
thecucumber
Haha for a second I thought you said the Canadian Middle East, and I thought that's a strange way to describe Quebec
myxomatos1s
Where is this community?
StrayItalianGreyhound
Qatar - grew up as an expat kid. My dad worked for a Canadian university there, and they hired mostly Canadians.

A former student of mine helps organize a Terry Fox run in Matsusaka, Japan every year. It's big in other parts of the country as well.
HalfPintKatie
That's awesome to hear!! I was barely a teenager when he did his run but I still remember it vividly.
StaringAtSidewalks
Isn't it due to Canada and Japan having numerous sister/friendship cities.
TempestWest
I'm not exactly sure but that would seem a good enough reason.

Oh wow I didn't know other places had them, thought it was a mainly Canadian thing. Thats really cool!

Terry Fox wanted to keep going too, but his cancer spread to his lungs and forced him to quit. We have a huge holiday for him in Canada.

Growing up, my sister misunderstood and thought he was Terry The Fox, a 3-legged fox, running The Marathon of Hope
NoLongerFoamingWolffo
The really shouldn't word that to make it sound like he died because of the running...

If anyone hasn't heard the story, his distance was an equivalent to a full marathon every day on a prosthetic leg to raise money for cancer.

tufkab
No, you have Terry Fox day. Not the same thing. The original comment was referencing a HOLIDAY. A Terry Fox holiday is a thing in Manitoba.
BujuArena
I have observed Terry Fox Day all my life in Ontario and BC. The only difference is that businesses didn't close. My schools ran though.
sometimesiknowthings
In Saskatchewan we would celebrate him, raise money, and do a Terry Fox walk for the last hour or so of the school day. He was amazing.

So in other words, not a holiday.

They certainly had a better temperament than the other chickens we had growing up.

well that's something i didn't want to hear :(

I would assume one looking, specifically, for a docile breed of chicken to keep as a pet wouldn't also be keeping other pet chickens.
Oddfish
I believe I've read it's actually considered cruel to keep only one chicken, regardless of breed. As they're such a social species.

Here in Canada Catholic Law cannot hide confessions from the law. If someone confesses the courts have full right to ask the priest what 1/2
ThatMicrosoftPaintGuy
the accused said, if they refuse they can be charged with obstruction of justice. 2/3
LandSquid12345
If this were to occur, they may very well fly the priest to the Vatican...
SecretlyThreeDucksInAManSuit
...and have him compete in a dance off with the pope to prove his innocence.
ThatMicrosoftPaintGuy
The only Canadian Provinces that respect this Privileged communications is Newfoundland and Quebec. All others follow Common Law.
nanonator
Wait, Canada has NO version of priest-penitent privilege in their CL? Most of the US states have at least a penitent-held privilege in CL.
ThatMicrosoftPaintGuy
Yeah. Only Labrador and Quebec respect the church. Everyone else follows common law (Britain-ish Laws)

Ryebread91
Shame also that someone can eat food from our trash and sue us for getting sick so why take the chance and donate it?
BluePaladin42
I would assume that if there was a legal impetuous to donate, there would also be legal protections to donate-rs.
Ryebread91
I'm sure there is but vegas throws out tons of food a day though I'm sure it's not considered safe after being in a buffet for x/time.
BigJB
Especially considering most food thrown out barely hits the 'best before' date and is nowhere near going bad.
TheFrenchGirl
Most of the time it's sold 50% of the price on the last day or the day before. I buy it everytime I can and freeze it. It save lot of €.
Lezbedevious
Here in US that's if it makes it to shelves. Lots of times farmers just trash it because its not appeasing visual quality, easier to trash.
Lezbedevious
Which is just sad that at the point fiscally instead of even selling for feed it's just thrown away
OSCgal
Doesn't a lot of "ugly" produce end up processed or canned instead? Because then looks don't matter.
iwantthepoints
False, if you ever volunteer at a food shelter youll see the tons and tons of food donated by markets that's up to a year past it's sell by.
robviously
Notice the qualifier "by and large"... obviously not all food is wasted. But the statement is still not false
robviously
Yes in some cases. But i know for a fact that large companies, like CVS, pull food off the shelves up to a month BEFORE expiration, and
robviously
Require it to be destroyed before being thrown away. E.g. - douse it in bleach. I used to work there and had to do it many times.
Tyrano73
I'm French and that's bullshit. They still throw away food
robviously
That sucks
MrPeebles
We don't recycle enough in general. Think about all the plastic, glass, and paper that fails to go for recycling via fast food daily...
thtguyjosh
Where I live I'm told that it's sorted at the dump but I've no idea
handparty
We got new bins where I'm at and it just doesn't make sense not to use the recycling one given how convenient it is now.
YouThinkThatsBad
Moving to Chicago from Seattle this was hard to deal with. No one in Chicago recycles.
Ryebread91
I think bottled water needs to stop and our store doesn't recycle our plastic bottles from our pharmacy.
GerhardRammelhausen
Tell that to the people of Flint
Ryebread91
Bottled water has its uses in that case but how much of the trash from that makes up the total landfill & ocean waste from plastic bottles?
OSCgal
I see your point. The problem is with all the disposable bottles. Like, at my job, we have bottle fillers, 2 on each floor, so we can 1/2
OSCgal
fill reusable bottles whenever we want. And you can buy filtered water in big (reusable) jugs. 2/2
MrPeebles
Yeah, a lot of college campuses are going to on site filters in all buildings so that everyone can bring reusable bottles.
StNickCage
Oh my God I know I got so pissed when I read that
inkdrocket
When I first heard that you dont recycle bottles and cans of soda I was shocked. Over here, you get automated machines that recycle them 1/2
inkdrocket
2/2 at supermarkets. You get .40€ from huge bottles and 0.15€ from cans. Even if its added to the price, its still better than trash.
inkdrocket
3/2 Plus it would give poor or homeless actual reason to clean bottles. Main reason why we have people collecting bottles at festivals.
humptyblargh
It's not every state, but we have those. We also do have recycling centers that buy aluminum and glass containers, almost everywhere.
PPontiac
actually the imge is neither wrong nor correct, they can't throw away edible food but they keep it on the shelves until expiration date -->
PPontiac
--> at wich point they throw it out , open the packages and pour bleach on it so the people in need can't come and salvage it despite -->
PPontiac
--> the fact that food is oft times still edible after it expires.
brobinson2001
We DO have the Harvester's program in some places. Restaurants put cancelled orders into their cooler, and homeless shelters freeze them 1/2
brobinson2001
And when a shelter person gets an apt, they stock them up on stuff that just needs nuked/put in the microwave for a few minutes.
NotTheMamaNotTheMama
That is very nice!
HanFuckingSolo
In Germany you have small bins that you have to separate food, trash, and recyclables. If it doesn't fit you compost it at your home
Tommy62222
I used to work in a grocery store in Oklahoma. We have our slightly bruised produce and day old donuts and the like to a local shelter. 1/2
Tommy62222
Then the health department made us stop. So into the trash it went. Dumb.
Feanor19
I read that like 60% of our food is waste. That does sound about right sadly. From the peeps I know and working food service for 12 years
Feanor19
I don't think it's that easy I believe the confession is considered privileged information
pancrazio
Non sequitur. They can consider confession as they wish, priest are still required to keep the secret if they wish to remain priests.
yuyufan43
Amen
AMigratingCoconut
No they don't. Google "Canon Law 983.1" and it should bring you to the relevant (Code of Canon Law) section of Vatican City's official site.
AMigratingCoconut
I think they can still insist the penitent turn themselves in or tell the police "investigate this man" But they can't directly say anything
flyingmonsters
No they cant say investigate anyone, thats a breach of the seal
ThatGuySev
If it is a Catholic priest, they are expected by the church to go to prison, rather telling anyone what you have confessed
kollette88
Yeah, there's the whole "sacramental seal of secrecy". The priests can't talk about sins outside of confession without severe penalty.
flyingmonsters
*"Seal of Confession"
kollette88
They've been referring to it as a "sacramental seal" in my theology class and in the textbook. I've heard both.
HeroOfCanton1
Catholic priest are instructed to go to jail and not give up any info on penalty of exominiction and mortal sin, ie hell
OSCgal
*excommunication (sorry)
ThatGuySev
That's correct
Falos
Ah, this sounds like the exact nature of it. I hope most courts aren't dicks about it. The booth only exists because of absolute confidence.
Gadvance
Law>Religion
HeroOfCanton1
one could argue other way around. Man writes laws, God reveals truth and divine law. It is why so many are willing to die for faith.
Falos
Even if they learn about someone planning to commit a crime.

this is not true. a priest cannot reveal any confession.
jval
There is a Priest-Penitent privilege, but there are different exceptions in different states.
flyingmonsters
no priest is going to do this becuase it is still means for excommunication.
greenmenfrommars
I imagine it depends upon the country. In the U.K. at least, priest-penitent privilege is not protected by law.
RedIronCrown
As far as I know confessions to a priest are still privileged and they can't be compelled to testify.
flyingmonsters
yep
flyingmonsters
that's not true at all. any sin confessed cannot be told to any one even the police. it's an unchanged law
AvidLebon
There was an episode of Forensic Files where the priest anonymously told the police, they traced it to the priest, and he had to tell who.
AvidLebon
So in a court of law, priests have been forced to tell what they know about a murder if the police know they have information.
flyingmonsters
The US the court system cannot force the priest to say anything if he did not disclose it to the police first.
AvidLebon
He had disclosed it in the anon letter, and then was court ordered to tell everything else.
flyingmonsters
also i looked up that episode. it was the bishop himself who had committed the murders. it didn't say that he confessed them and that
flyingmonsters
priest told the police,
AvidLebon
That must be a different ep. This one a man told the priest in the confessional, and the priest wrote an anon letter about that man. not him
Canadoug
Shit. Are you sure? I think I've made a huge mistake....
flyingmonsters
they are lying. anything you say will not be told to anyone
bambulina
Yeah I was gonna say, I don't think the gov't gives a frick about "Catholic Law"
flyingmonsters
yeah they do. it has been respected, but in more recent years some countries are trying to force the priest to give up the info.
Relicanth
If they don't know that you know, they can't compel testimony. It isn't a crime to know somebody committed a murder without being involved.
LandSquid12345
No they don't, the seal of confession is unbreakable.
kiruwa
It's true in most of the first world.

It's still true. You can even confess a crime to a lawyer and they can't tell the police. it changes if you say you intend to commit a crime
ThatShiftyMonkey
Depends on the country's laws. I believe the US doesn't require it for past murders, but does for imminent ones.
HighFunctioningAlcoholic
No one in the US is required to turn someone in for murder.
HighFunctioningAlcoholic
*in most states.
flyingmonsters
no priest is going to give information on what is confessed though
ThatShiftyMonkey
I think the catholic church tells the priests that they're supposed to report it if someone says they're going to kill someone.
flyingmonsters
it would have to be an anonymous tip for a future event, but if the act is already done he cannot say anything.
ipostwhatyouseeabove
One study has been done, showing that sexual crime rates in the Catholic church are the same as rates in Protestant churches (US.) 1/2
JonathanSwiftProbablyInventedBabybackRibs
Unfortunately, that study was sponsored by the US Council of Bishops (Catholic.) I don't know of any other similar studies.
Bravacado
Pedophilia is a problem ANYWHERE. People assume every priest is a pedophile and all other priests are okay with it, which they clearly arent
Bravacado
They're just as horrified by it. Celibacy doesn't make you automatically gun for children. You can also quit the priesthood if it's too much.
llortamai
Sorry, had a friend who was molested. Didn't mean to hurt your feelings.
llortamai
And yes, the molester is working with kids in another town, thanks to the church. But hey, sorry for the "joke"
Bravacado
You didn't hurt my feelings. Truly sorry that happened to your friend. But it's a person who committed the crime, not the church. 1/2
llortamai
Yes, and the church helped him move to another church. The protected a pedo rather than the victim. He'll do it again, and they'll move him.
Bravacado
2/2 The church has done amazing things. It's not just that priest that went free. Justice is not always served outside the church.
xkr73
Besides, if you're confessing, you have to do penance to be absolved of your sins - most priests make the penance"confess to police"
OSCgal
Oh man, I have to ask my dad about this. He works for the local diocese & is best friends with one of the priests. (We're not Catholic.)
Smitsu
Can't I just retake the holy land instead?
DarthFutuza
What will you do with it after you retake it?
flyingmonsters
no, that is not true at all. they can try to give you council to turn yourself in, but they cannot force you to turn yourself in.
xkr73
Thank you for disagreeing - the resultant debate has given me quite a bit to think on.
flyingmonsters
like what?
LooseyGooseyBrett
Priests can't force you to do anything you don't want; that is, unless you are a young boy.
flyingmonsters
not sure how that is relevant to what i posted
Bullkholtz
Why are people downvoting? I am Catholic, that shit happened. Every group of humans has some fucked up skeletons in their closet.
flyingmonsters
because it is irrelevant to this conversation. it is a joke in poor taste
nightrideFM
They're not forcing you to.. if you want to be forgiven, you'll have to do what they think is best.
lostsemicolon
Incorrect. You are absolved of your sins when the words of absolution are spoken. Completing penance isn't part of that.
kollette88
You used to have to do penance first and then come back to get absolution. Now it's flipped, but penance is still a necessary part of the
waitwasthatreal
Their cannot withhold penance on the requirement of telling someone else your sins. So no, they can't do that
flyingmonsters
no all that is required is to have sorrow for sins, and you can be absolved. it is not penance first than absolution is given.
kollette88
It used to be, but now absolution is first and penance is to be completed later.
flyingdutchfrenchman
I'd guess that "catholic laws" don't mean jack shit in reality. If the priest is required by law to snitch, he has to, otherwise he doesn't.
flyingmonsters
any catholic priest is not going to give up sins confessed
flyingdutchfrenchman
Yeah but I'm just saying, its irrelevant to the country's law wether catholic law told him to or not. At least here in laic countries.
flyingmonsters
That's not true at all. In civil law there is "priest-penitent privilege" protecting them
flyingdutchfrenchman
I guess we have to define which country we're actually talking about then.
