Have you heard of this guy called Clickspring? He did a video series building a (best guess at a) functional copy of The Antikythera Mechanism with period-appropriate tools. Sure, he didn't go back to the very first tools, but the stuff he was using was simple enough that you could see where they might have originated, if you were set on going back a few more thousand years!
Similar thing with programming languages. Every program's source code needs to be compiled to machine code to run. Every compiler is itself a program. The first compiler had to be written in machine code, by hand.
