When I was in Kenya I visited a place in the Great Rift Valley called Olorgesailie where the Leakies did some of their famous archaeology. Known as the "factory of stone tools" it used to be a lake front where pre-homo sapien hominems lived and made stone tools by knapping flint and such like. ...there's a theory the manufacturers believed the work to make a tool imbued it with it's cutting ability, and to get new sharp edges you had to do the work of making one from scratch thus no resharpened tools and many more made than necessary. That's where it starts - million of years ago.

At the hammer, anvil and fire. Every tool we've ever created started with a rock hitting something against another rock while it was made hot. That's the end of the chain. If you get the chance to do a blacksmithing workshop, you literally make every tool you will use. It's really cool.

Also, what do you make the machines out of? Have to advance metallurgy as well. John Moses Browning was a mechanical genius, created entire families of guns, but they couldn't have been invented too long before they were, because they needed the steel to handle the pressure, and the new smokeless powder, for that manner.

Have you heard of this guy called Clickspring? He did a video series building a (best guess at a) functional copy of The Antikythera Mechanism with period-appropriate tools.
Sure, he didn't go back to the very first tools, but the stuff he was using was simple enough that you could see where they might have originated, if you were set on going back a few more thousand years!

Similar thing with programming languages. Every program's source code needs to be compiled to machine code to run. Every compiler is itself a program. The first compiler had to be written in machine code, by hand.
