Hope he learned how to be thoughtful at home and the AF reinforced it. Well done on both your parts.

Is that a bottle opener on that combat coin?

My brother is a USAF airman, and he sent my mother a flag that was flown over Afganistan on her birthday in her honor.
unimaginativeuser2
well that coin is pretty tasteless
Ladysauce27
My husband did this for his grandmothers in honor of his now deceased grandfathers (both military) in Afghanistan. It was sweet.
idpassr
That's awesome sauce!
sclark1138
This is not something the do in mass. My brother-in-law does these only for family, or close friends.
kustomkirk
The humbling simple gesture is your giving away your seat. The fucktard 'I did something good' is self serving bullshit.
dlm999
I did that when I was in the deid. I was a crew chief and flew a flag for many flights. During those flights it flew over syria, Iraq and
Afghanistan many times. Dropped 500 munitions and had 300+flying hours. I gave it to my mom along with the coin and certificate
Trumpolicious
This is cool. Not all service members will do shit like this. Some are real asshats.
BiiiigJilm
Sortie duration: 12.9 hours, damn I hope they weren't flying that whole time that's crazy
Ryykur
That coin is sweet!
AdriftDreamer
I've worked on this aircraft! The B-1 is my baby.

I remember this when it was posted a few weeks ago "op"
BobColeJr
When my dad served in Afghanistan, he did this for every family member. That's some special shit right there. I had mine framed.
duckducknogoose
Those b-1s were flown out of the Deid. People pay for a flag, it gets put into a bag and gets loaded on the jet.

I find it a bit odd that they've in the business of making souvenirs while killing people.
Fuck we're out of party favours, best go bomb another couple of villages
TinySupreme
You got jipped. There's only half of that weird blue sandwich. I'd call corporate if I were you.

When I look at the coin I can't help but think 'Are we the bad guys ?'.

So wait. Seeing the flag being folded in a triangle, and the certificate saying, "flown in honor of", I'm assuming he is dead..?
colreee
Not necessarily. My husband is in the air force (he's a crew chief) and did this for my mother, two of my uncles and his father... (1/2)
Ah, I see. Thank you!
(2/2) all of which are still living. It's just a cool gesture for sure. He also did one for our household as well
sorrynotsorryimnotcanadian
This is the type of story that you shouldn't tell - leave it to your kids to figure out where you got this once you're dead.

Gunsling3r
I heard from a friend in the army that when they are at the bar the person with the fewest coins has to buy the rest beers hence the opener?
steviedrawsdinos
My RAF friend said that if you walk into a bar and rap the coin on the bar, any serviceman caught without his bought drinks.

It's enduring freedom bc it was the next operation after Iraqi freedom, coming from a recent veteran.

Operation Enduring Freedom b/c we are ensuring that freedom will endure. Also itis quite fitting b/c itis the longest campaign in US history
AlwaysSiloeTen
Looks like it came from a fellow USAF Airmen not Soldier. As a fellow Airman I will tell you jesters like giving up a seat means a lot.

soldier is generic for service member for most, allow the sentiment without your precious qualifier, chairforce
[deleted]
so for the hypersensitive squids, jarheads and chairforce, the term "soldier" has been used generically for so long it belies your ignorance
RaisinZetaJones
My God you are an utter cock. And not even a nice cock, just a shriveled old man cock peeking impotently out of a half-closed zipper. Cock.

Correct, I politely correct them because I feel that we earned out titles, Soldier, Sailor, Marine and Airmen.
ScottNapalm
Personally my position doesn't require real combat training, and I'm not in a place to do the kind of work they do or claim that I can (2/2)
Plus, it's kinda like each title has its own merit. As a sailor, I've earned my title, but it feels wrong saying I'm a soldier because (1/2)

A lot of military coins (or at least Navy in my experience) are designed to be bottle openers too.
If not, they know about a dozen techniques to use it as such.

It's not disrespectful. You're right. I have 2 Marine Corps Ball coins that double as bottle openers.

There is a game where you throw your coin on the table whoever doesn't have one or does it last(?) buys the next round ...so my husband says
Depends on the rules, you can also play where the lowest ranking coin buys the beers (based on rank of the person who gives the coins)
