Venus’ orbit around the Sun takes 224.7 Earth days. At first it just seems like a random number, but when scaled in time, we see that both planets interlock their orbits in a 13:8 ratio (Venus: Earth, respectively)—so for every eight years on Earth, Venus cycles around the Sun roughly 13 times. When we trace the two orbits for that time and draw a line between them each week, we see they draw a beautiful 5-fold symmetrical pattern. If we map each point when the two planets align with the Sun and run imaginary lines, we see a near-perfect 5-pointed star. - See more at: http://m.mentalfloss.com/article.php?id=67131#sthash.h7SundnZ.dpuf

Every 12 years an awesome flower-like shape is formed from earth and venus orbit

I mean you could pick any two random planets and get some sort of spirograph pattern from comparing their orbital periods.

@Sagan pls

Then the Catholic Church implied that the symbol is satanic, to keep women "in their place", so to speak.

Anyone else see the rebel alliance insignia on the first pass?

Was expecting to be hit with cera

A five pointed star, you say? Hail Satan, and have a good day.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

what does it mean, is there something actually drawing that pattern out? the changing view from the earth of venus?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

TIL earth and Venus make a pretty legit OG Mandala pattern.

My god, it's full of lines

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Did someone call for me?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Have the line gradually change colours. That'd be a sick background.

crazy how physics do that

Ph.D. astronomer here - this is news to me! Thanks!

Damn, crazy how an explosion made that.

But what does it all MEAN, Basil?

That's beautiful

Thank you for letting that finish.

"Can't catch me, see ya, look at you, I circled twice and you're still here, loser! Come on loser, hurry up" -Jerk Venus to slow earth

"Jerk Venus"

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Meanwhile Earth just calls back "Oh yeah? Well your oceans evaporated because you're literally hell! I have life, dammit!"

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Venus and earth don't share the same orbital plane. Otherwise, this could kind of be neat.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Venus' inclination relative to the Earth ecliptic is only a measly 3.4 degrees. Only 3 times that of the Moon's inclination.

Why I suck at kerbal space program

Also coincidentally 8 and 13 just so happen to be adjacent in the Fibonacci Sequence.

As below, so above and beyond, I imagine drawn beyond the lines of reason. Push the envelope. Watch it bend.

One of the best songs ever <3

Dear God this is relaxing.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Did you ever own a spirograph? very similar :D

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a matter of fact I did. This was more fun to just watch. :)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Let's just call it what it is. Spirograph.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

i could say the same about your mom's vagoo

Hey-o!!!

it's what happens when she throws that ass in a circle. thanks for playing.

Doesn't Orbital resonance cause enormous problems?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Earth and Venus aren't really in orbital resonance, we're 0.032% off from an 8:13 resonance. Tiny deviation, but enough to break the effect.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Only when the orbiting objects are relatively large mass compared to the parent body. Jupiter's inner three major moons are in 1:2:4.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you had Earth-size moons orbiting Saturn, resonance would be a huge problem.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Such as? This is new to me

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There's evidence of Jupiter and Saturn I think getting into a 1:3 resonance which sent the solar system crazy

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Show us this evidence.

What would it look like with, let's say, an elliptical orbit?

10 years ago | Likes 214 Dislikes 2

Illuminati.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

People aren't that intelligent.

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 5

The orbits of he inner planets are elliptical, but only slightly so. They are fairly close to round.

10 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 2

Earth and Venus have much lower orbital eccentricities than Mars and Mercury's. Mercury has the highest eccentricity of the regular planets.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Depends a lot on the ellipticities and phases of the orbits but it would probably break down into a mess really quickly.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Similar but bent.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

what kind of crazy god would create elliptical orbits?

10 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 2

The god that created Mars, Mercury, the Pluto-Charon system, Ceres, Haumea, Sedna, Planet Nine, 67P, Haley's comet, I could go on.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

uh, I know this is a old comment, but all orbits are inherently always elliptical.l

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Some orbits are pretty darn near circular. Especially those of some moons. Strictly speaking you'll never find a *perfectly* circular orbit.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yes that is why I said that.
