EDIT 4: out of the 6 kids, the 3 daughters split the funeral cost. I’m happy to have been helped, and happy to know my brothers don’t have to worry about paying.
I’ve lost my mother at a young age, and two brothers after that. Many of my extended family have passed including a favorite cousin who was murdered by her ex. I thought I’d be able to handle my father’s death since I had time to say goodbye, but it still hurts over a month later. I think I need to restart therapy.
EDIT 3: This has been rough. Thank you all for your comments and messages. The oldest daughter already started shit. She feels we need to sort out his house now. Thankfully the youngest brother told her to fuck off and that we will work on that after dad is buried.
To clarify, the 3 youngest are the ones I’m cool with. I think the 2 oldest act this way because they were adults when our mother died. They didn’t have to live less than paycheck to paycheck and watch our father struggle after such a loss. We also lost a brother a few years later and that hit us hard to stay in the house he died in.
Crazy family dynamics for certain! LOVE YOU IMGURIANS!!!!!
EDIT 2: Guys! (And gals/ghouls/gremlins) I said I wanted to vent to Usersub! But you assholes banded together to get me to Most Viral. Thank you. ?
My mother died of cancer when I was 3. Dad struggled to provide for all of us younger kids. He hated “assistance” and fought hard to not be on it. So he was unable to save. As of December, I was promoted and I now make more than my siblings. I have no spouse, no kids, and no mortgage. I owe him as much to give him a wonderful resting place when he couldn’t do so for mom.
I don’t want bragging rights over him. I just know if he could, he’d have sold anything to bury me. He’s the only parent I remembered.
EDIT: He just passed. I’m thankful he’s no longer in pain. Im going to go somewhere he’d love and toast my coffee to his memory.
I just need to vent into the Usersub void.
I’m the youngest of what was at one point nine kids. We are familiar with death and the funeral home is a familiar place, but I knew this would hit different. I’m planning on paying the $12k bill myself since my two oldest siblings are greedy and would hold it over everyone’s heads until they pass.
Plus I knew my oldest sister would claim the $10k burial fund we all agreed to set aside from the sale of our grandmother’s house was spent paying the taxes and repairs on dad’s shithole house. A house that honestly should have been condemned since 2005.
To be honest, I want to disappear from my family for a long while after dad passes. I know at least the two oldest will fight over his possessions. I’m washing my hands of them for a while.
His slow decline is breaking me and I’ve told him today he doesn’t have to fight anymore.
Mydogismybestman
Peace be with you.
Bugguts1957
Condolences for your Dad,do try to remember the better times and the rest of the family stuff will work itself out somehow
HaloandQ
RIP. Sorry for your loss ?
itsjustplaid
I'm sorry for your loss... and that some of your siblings suck. I hope you find some peace and comfort during this time.
paulhollywood9
Sorry to read this ..but please guys make a will while you're of sound body & mind. There is no guarantee any of us will wake up tmrw
orangeyougladididntsaypoop
Im sorry for your loss. My dad had stage 4 cancer for 10 years. It was a slow burn and hard to watch the decline.
uummma
lawyer up. protect yourself from future mental anguish
Cutthroatlemur
The fighting typically comes after the Funural, after my grandmother died i had never met 70% of that side of the family
WasWholeWheatAmNowToast
been there... we do it because it's the right thing to do for the person that won't even know about it and for the good karma points.
darkyamir
Take time to recover from it all OP - I've gone through a similar thing with my mom recently if you need to chat
bourbonandbaddecisions
Advanced healthcare directive for disposition. Is one of the best things you can do for your family.

I recently paid for my next-door neighbors funeral. His kids wanted nothing to do with him, never did, we gave him a decent burial.
WatcherNotCreeper
Never saw a penny from my grandmother's passing. It was worth it not to deal with my Uncle ever again (my mother passed previously)
boodow
My dad's in hospice now. He also lived in a shit hole house until he was forced to sell and move into my grandma's shit hole house 1/2
boodow
My sister and I get along well, but his brothers are going to fight bitterly over their mother's $. Guess who gets to be her executor! 2/2
Schmaron
Oh man. I’m sorry for your pain.
pinkhoneybee
@OP, allow yourself to a couple of your father’s things that remind you of him. Many times sentimental things cost the least to buy, but
pinkhoneybee
are worth more in memories alone. Chances are your siblings will be too busy fighting to even know it’s gone. You did your father proud.
dumberthanyouraveragebear
I respect how you handled this. Honestly, I think inheritance is the worst thing in the world. Not because I’m against money, but for what
dumberthanyouraveragebear
It does to families when a loved one dies.
OhNoDontTouch
I'm against it because it makes people want to hoard wealth to give to their offspring. Give it to them while you're alive or not at all.→
OhNoDontTouch
→It'd not only be better for the economy, but maybe well-off folks would care more about having a good social safety net in place if there→
OhNoDontTouch
→was even a slight chance that their own kids might have to rely on it, themselves, one day.
dumberthanyouraveragebear
Totally agree

Knew a family of five siblings that fought over the $4000 their parents had in the bank when they died in a car wreck. Pretty sad.
JeffGodofBiscuits
I don't know what to say... save your receipts?
wellembalmed
If there is an estate, chance you can be reimbursed
Schmaron
Sadly, he had next to nothing.
wellembalmed
My condolences, by the way. Good of you to stand and handle what needs to be done.
Peachcappuccino
Is it common for Americans not to have life insurance? Even poorer Aussies usually have it, that pays for funeral expenses.
Schmaron
I have it, but I think he never did since he was of the WWII generation
Peachcappuccino
That's such a shame. It's very unfair how older people are treated.
MyBallsAreAsSmoothAsEggs
Damn, man. Money is a motherfucker. Some people just don’t get it. Not much I can say except I respect you doing the right thing. Much love.
LANAAAAAAAAAA
I'll make sure to let everyone know to cremate me, cardboard coffin, shit put me in a coffee can like Donnie for all I care. I'm dead.
madeejit
Family and money. Oil and water.
ligmabolz
I did the same for my ex wife. Her family is poor and I didn't want her to worry about the financial part. You're a good person
ilhares
I have a feeling, even semi-estranged, if my father goes before I do that I shall be utterly destroyed. Mother's dead, not so much.
tcdriver
They will still find a way to be angry..hurt.. pissed off or just plain assholes about it...good luck my friend
Oxymuncher
Yeah I’m sure somehow he’s an asshole for not letting them chip in
tillie350
I'm the youngest of 4. I didn't pay for it but I planned my mums funeral when I was 18. She wanted it simple, woodland cemetery with a
tillie350
Wicker coffin (serece pink lining as requested) and a removable plaque so one day the place will just seem to be an eclectic mix of trees
tillie350
It is a beautiful thing to visit and see the tree grow, and have the grandchildren she never knew play with branches or leaves etc.
elliottsdragon
When people die and there is money involved you see peoples true colors—normally greed. Your true colors, sir, show you’re a caring person.
lucindamarie18
Due to $ grabbing bitch sisters. I spent $1,000.00 to get small items I wanted when mom died.
SGD85
Greedy brother was the same way when my dad passed. Cut him out of my life and have been alot happier.
lucindamarie18
Got to the point I had to go thru sister handling the estate affairs attorney if I had ??'s about the estate. Couldn't ask her anything ..
SGD85
Family can be shitty sometimes. Brother tried to lie to me when I was 17 about my inheritance. 10 years later all comes out. Pathetic move.
allibaster12
My dad is the oldest of 5. When my grandma passed my dad decided to take care of it all. When it was said and done he split the remaining
allibaster12
Funds up between him and his siblings. They all took the money and ran and stopped talking to one another for a long time. He decided
allibaster12
He didn't want my brother and I to worry about any of that, so he's already planned and paid for both his and my mothers funerals.
MarcUK
There are funeral plans where you can pay everything now. So even if you live another 20 years and the cost doubles, there's no extra to pay
SevenSsssss
Good on him. Holy shit that's foresight I would pay to have in my immediate family. I'm just now setting an actual will
ElviraQueenOfDarkness
In my country. Its the norm to have burial insurance. You ccan even task the insurance with your burial. So they handle everything.
Waitihavesomething4this
In America itd probably be considered a pre existing condition to be dead
Waitihavesomething4this
I watched my dad struggle to pay for my moms funeral. Lots of gofundme’s later and she 4 years in the ground and still no headstone. My hubs
Waitihavesomething4this
And I decided no funeral. No expense. Burn and turn baby. I am gonna have my ashes made into diamonds for each of my daughters tho
MizKriss
My mom and stepdad did that for themselves when grandpa died in 2020. Wasn’t expecting to actually use it 7 months later when stepdad died.
hiiamluciole
i am sorry for your loss and hope your Mom and you are slowly doing okay. /internethug
ZOMGNO
Fuck, thats rough, dude. I'm sorry. I hope your Mom is doing okay
saeheria
I wish it was legal to throw a body in a dumpster with raccoons, because that’s why I want done to me when I die
curolina
That's not far from illegal. What do you think they do with unclaimed bodies?
saeheria
Yeah, when they do it, when I do it it’s a crime
mrsdowneyjr
My siblings and I decided my dad wouldn't want us to go into debt for his funeral so we held a close family memorial at a park and snuck his
mrsdowneyjr
Ashes to his 3 favorite places.
friendsofsandwiches
Grab anything important, get the fuck out. You can choose your friends, you can kinda choose your enemies, but you can't choose your family.
wadenelson1
Grab one keepsake that reminds you of him. I kept my father's NASA badge.
Ismelledwhattherockwascooking
I also choose this guys fathers NASA badge
thefriendlybeer
Maybe grab a coffee cup/mug that was his or one he liked? And a shirt. I wish I’d been able to take one of grandpa’s.
ptothedubs
My mom had my grandpa’s shirts made into teddy bears. She gave it to me for my birthday and I sobbed.
DoomKitty01
That's why i call my siblings friends. So they know i actually want them. Good luck for OP to not have that many stress. Also sorry :/
Haemaelaeinen
You can choose your family. Just get the fuck out and never come back. Easy as that.
Cuckoldcameraman
Easy* defined here as really hard but necessary
MaxieMooo
My friends are my family. Fortunately my immediate family are all very kind people and I'm proud to call them family too..
MaxieMooo
But until she changes her opinions and educates herself, my antivax aunt is no longer my family.
justaguuyyfromgermany
I can't stress enough how true the first part is. Greedy and shitty family aren't worth it. They will keep disrespecting and being shit :(
SacrificialClam
And you chose be make friends with a bunch of sandwiches?
mikeatike
Mashed potatoes can be your friend.
friendsofsandwiches
At least they don't betray you.
wellembalmed
That is a good way to get in legal estate related trouble, assuming things you grab may be in a will or you are not the legal executor
BriefausdemGeist
A lot of people die intestate: source, am lawyer.
wellembalmed
Valid point
Rayplays
When my grandfather passed, things disappeared without a trace and no consequences were ever levied.
DonnaNobleInTheLibrary
Yeah, but @op's siblings sound like they'd sue over it. My mum spent over a year in court with her 2nd husband's kids.
DonnaNobleInTheLibrary
The will had long been known and agreed upon, after he died they suddenly claimed he hadn't been of sound mind.
Schmaron
My siblings are too poor to sue. And it’s mainly the two oldest. The oldest sister is the executor, so I’m walking away from hearing her.
Dumpsterbreathdog
Yup. My aunt emptied my grandmas house before anyone had a chance to even plan a funeral and she was certainly not held accountable.
RedRatchet765
My granddad's second wife stole his coin collection from his time in the navy during ww2, amongst so many other heirlooms. No consequences.
ChupaChena
There is a special pace in hell for people who steal from the dead
Brookimus741
When my grandma was dying my Aunt Angel (she was a sunshine baby and significantly younger than her siblings) went a little nuts.
Brookimus741
My mom and some of her sister were at Grandmas house visiting and she called the cops on. Them saying they threatened to kill her with a gun
Brookimus741
Then claimed she lived at that address. The neighbor corrected her to the cops so she was asked to leave, and my grandmas husband asked them
Brookimus741
to leave and so they had to pay for a hotel unexpectedly. My other Aunt got so mad that she actually started threatening her for a second.
Nalianna
Grab something sentimental. I still have a pair of ceramic statues from my grandmothers house.
Nalianna
Not valuable, but i saw them every day while growing up. They're more valuable to me, than money.
friendsofsandwiches
This is the type of shit I'm thinking of. Things they would otherwise toss or garage sale at best for a buck.
