Some touch screens don't register some (or most) cloth. Obviously, they made sure that Starfleet pants don't work on the touch-screens.
JLPDayton72
Lasers? That would be Phasers and Photon Torpedoes....you must nerd properly! LOL

Each console requires a user access code to accept any input, I only know that because I'm re watching it on Netflix

Data looks quite concerned that the buttpad could actually do some damage.

Whenever the ship lurches, you see people sprawl all over consoles. I'd think that would cause all sorts of problems.

It probably has active fingerprint monitoring all over so that only authorized users can press a button. an butt wouldn't be authorized
EricRussell
They cover this in an episode when a kid thinks he broke a ship.
ThatJerkYouKnow
That's what I'm saying. They have programs that know when you're entering commands or queries, and when you're relaxing/leaning.
I was thinking of something more like Total Surface Touch ID kind of tech. Linked to what you are allowed to do and such.

its explained in one of the books, all starfleet personal have finger implants to manipulate screens. Its also a security mesure.

For me the bigger problem is why in hell my superior officer would plant his ass on my workstation where I have to touch everything

I dunno. The way she's looking at him, I can imagine she might be looking forward to that indirect butt touch.

1st episode I thought of when I saw the post.
touchpad at the just before the explosion. Data says that there is always a specific sequence of inputs to have any action. Butt mashing 2/

Fun Fact: the actor who played Riker got back injury and can't sit down normally in any scene. Rewatch to see how he sits down!
SgtChowdown
And how he gets up out of chairs. The Riker Sit is a huge thing lol

lol I watched all of TNG several times and never noticed this.
I literally didn't notice til last year when my husband mentioned it, and I've watched TNG since before I could talk lol
PatricianVetinari
I always thought it was some alpha male shit he did to assert his dominance. Like presenting the junk so that everybody knew about it
I never really noticed that he sat weird, which is funny, because now I point it out EVERY time it happens on a rerun lol

Fun Fact #2: Fans have called this 'The Riker Manoeuvre'.
ArdentSlacker
... I don't think *that* is the bit we call the Riker Maneuver. It's "the reason he gets the ladies". :D
Nuh, The Riker Manoeuvre is definitely the way he steps over the chair before sitting.
Man. Tough crowd when a dick joke doesn't fly.
Oh. I don't get it. Don't feel bad though, I don't get most forms of humour unless it's really obvious.
