A New Adventure

Hello, imgur! My name is Nick Robinson, creator of the brand new "Pilgrims of Rao" tabletop roleplaying game. If you've got a minute I'd love to share my game with you.

The game:
"Pilgrims of Rao" is a pencil and paper tabletop RPG that combines the freedom of a roleplaying game with the structure of a board game and a video game. The game is made for 2-9 players and can be played in short 30-90 minute sessions or long term campaigns spanning weeks, at player discretion. Players create their world, create and customize their characters, and set off on their adventure. Players progress toward their goals by completing one of three encounter types: Combat Encounters, Communication Encounters, or Exploration Encounters. The game is over when the ultimate goal of the session is complete, or at player discretion. All you need to play is a pencil, paper, dice, and a guidebook.

- Three unique encounter types, like 3 games inside a meta game
- Legacy system for generations of heroes to continue on the name
- Scenario/campaign objectives adjust for players of all levels

Kickstarter Campaign

The book is not yet available, but it will be soon. The projected release date is December 2015, three months after funding concludes. The book will then be available on Amazon (also possibly DriveThruRPG in digital format).

The goal:
Our goal is to launch an 8.5x11 softcover book with over 100 pages of fully illustrated content. We hit 25% funding on the first day and now we are 105% funded with two backer goals down.
Now we are looking for any more interested parties who want to get in on the campaign (and rewards) before it comes to an end. We are very close to hitting our next backer goal and stretch goal for bonus free content.

Why Bring the Game to imgur?

Over the last few months it has been my joy to see posts about roleplaying games reach the front page on a weekly basis. People came out of the woodwork with wacky tales of "Dungeons & Dragons" and uncomfortable Orcs, adventures in forgotten lands that helped students deal with the stress of college life, and creative shenanigans that make memories out of weekends. What tabletop gaming is really about, more than the monsters or the dice, is having fun with your friends.

I brought Rao to imgur to share my passion for tabletop games with you all. If even one person here plays the game and enjoys it, then all the work will be worth it. :)
(We had an event about a week back where all longtime attendees came from imgur)

For anyone who has seen my posts here before, yes, I have been posting to imgur frequently. I want to make sure all people who might be interested have a chance to check out the project. However, I do not wish to appear too frequently and come off as a spammer, thus there will only be one more post after this one during the last 48 hours of the campaign.
Other posts include a game introduction, event information, introduction to two of the major races, and a full combat tutorial.

Thank you all for granting me the opportunity for me to share my game with you. The last 30 days have been wild. :)

Lore

Humans and elves served the Primarchs for all of prehistory. The Primarchs were as gods to us, pure embodiments of natural forces like life, death, fire, time, and chaos. Then the true gods awoke from their slumber. Gods and angels, children of the first creator, warred with the Primarchs and wiped them out.
-
The gods recognized humanity's divine origins and so gave us the Echo Stones. These stones let us surpass our mortal limitations and become like gods. Then the gods gave us the city of Rao as our capital so that we might rule over all the mortal world.
-
Humans enjoyed a golden age unsurpassed by any empire in history. At its height we discovered Arcane energy. We built robots, hover bikes, and teleportation gates capable of tearing holes in the fabric of reality. Soon the people began to cry out for more. We who ruled over the mortal realm, we the children of the first creator, deserved to rule it all.
-
One thousand years ago, humans invaded heaven. Gods, elves, angels, dragons, nothing could stop us. Until THEY came... When we punched a hole through the planes of existence we left the door open behind us. Primordial darkness from the dawn of time surged across heaven and earth. The Hel were awoken and with their coming we lost everything. Our powers, our civilization, and even Rao itself.
-
Today peasants and heroes alike watch the setting sun like a rattlesnake waiting to strike. They'll flee to their cities when the light begins to wane. Torches line city walls, windows are shuttered, and the night watch musters the courage to take their posts. The shadows slink about. Someone is crying again. Another night begins.
-
But not all humans are afraid. With the power of the Echo Stones we can reclaim our godly heritage. Heroes strap on lanterns and draw their blades. We will march into the darkness and take back our world. We are the Pilgrims of Rao.

Full of Art and Robust Mechanics

The Pilgrims of Rao Core Guidebook is chock full of wonderful art created by people from all over the world. The book is a massive collaborative project developed with months of hard work to bring the best possible product to our players.
I would appreciate any support you can give. Thank you for your time.

Reiterating here that WE HIT FUNDING! :D
We are well on our way to our next stretch goal and backer goal. That means more bonus content for everyone!

A full 100 page beta (prior to final balancing) can be found on our facebook page as a free download (named as Guidebook Preview). Primers on final rules and other game information are also free to download.

I am curious as to the strange tower on the cover. I am intrigued.

Thank you. Our artists do a wonderful job. :)

One layout nitpick: Someone needs to fix the kerning on the cover's "RAO." The R and A are too far apart. They probably need to touch.

Thanks for bringing that up. The sharp terminations forcing the letters apart come from the "Megadeth" font. We can look at that again. :)

Pretty much anything following that R. Same thing with Pilgrims.

Good point. Sometimes it takes another pair of eyes to spot something you are accustomed to. :)
