Shooting Old London Bridge...

May 2, 2018 2:05 AM

This is Old London Bridge. For centuries this the only way to cross the River Thames. Rather than go on about the history of the Bridge and who lived on it etc; how about we talk about something utterly fucked up and insane that people did for kicks?

Something that shows that human beings, no matter what age we live in, have never changed and tend to do dumb shit no matter what era they are to be found?

Alright, today I'm gonna talk about an absolutely sphincter-tightening terror inducing medieval/Elizabethan white knuckle thing called ‘Shooting the Bridge’ (or occasionally ‘Shooting the Moon’).
The deadly water ride of medieval/Tudor London.

OK so some fun facts about Old London Bridge and the river it's built over. The Thames was a serious river. The tides would see it rise or fall up to six feet on a normal day. But heavy rains or a strong tide would see water surge and make the river faster. Keep this in mind.

Now if you want to 'shoot the bridge' tradition dictates you fall into one of two categories. Category one would be brave (and dumb) river men who wished to show off their skills by daring to do this. But that takes years of training/experience to get that good and the experienced guys would not go full retard on this ride.

And to get it you have to go full retard.

The other category were drunks. See the bridge links London to Southwark and Southwark was famed as the 'party zone' of London. The red light district, the gambling dens, a place where folks went to let their hair down. So you would get a load of guys who would go to Southwark, get properly drunk and then get it into their heads to shoot the bridge.

And because they usually had been partying all day?
They often did this madness at night (where the 'shoot the moon' term came from I believe).

How drunk were they usually?

You know that level of drunk you get where someone suggests something really stupid (stuff you would never do when sober) and you all like, “Yeah man that’s a great idea”?

You need to be THAT drunk to get on this ride.

OK, so once that is sorted, you and your companions would get yourself a boat. A small one- preferably a rowing boat. You would row out into the middle of the river opposite St Paul’s, and then start rowing towards the bridge itself. Giggle lots. At least one should say “This is gonna be fuckin’ awesome” at this point.

Now you may have noticed that Old London Bridge was built upon a series of giant struts in the river. They were called 'starlings'. These made the river narrow and forces it through channels going at a fair speed. Added to that there were water wheels at both ends- these slow down the flow of water at the ends, speeding up the flow towards the centre.

What is rarely shown in pictures however is that the Thames contains quite a bit of shit in it. Branches from trees upstream, discarded furniture, general rubbish- the flotsam and jetsam of a major river running through a populated area. This rubbish is swept down towards the Bridge by the strong tides and quite a bit gets tangled in the struts below. This creates a debris field. In time this catches more junk. The crap stuck to the starlings of the bridge increases in size and as such?

It narrows the gap. The river flows even faster through the narrower gap. This draws more junk and…

You get the picture. Aside from a few channels kept specifically clear for the progress of boats up and down the river, most of the gaps were stupidly narrow. Filled will insanely fast white water, and strewn with debris that will tear the shit out of your boat. In some cases? It might as well be a weir. A weir with jagged bits.

Have I mentioned that the river Thames is an insanely powerful river and as well as the tides it's got some vicious undercurrents and hidden rip tides and if you fall in the chances of making it are virtually zero?

Oh. I should have. Because yes, this river is deadly. Falling in is fucking suicide. Especially near the bridge.

So by now you and your bros would have suddenly sobered up enough to realise that if you capsize, hit debris, get stuck in the gap or fall out for any reason? You’re gonna drown.

But hey- what’s life without a little risk eh?

So you would grab hold of the sides, scream for your mother and partake in the ritual of showing how fucking insane you are by shooting through one of the scary ass gaps in the Bridge supports. If it works? You will fly out the other side, having experienced a proper adrenaline high (and added a new piss stain to your leggings).
If you wipe out?

They’ll probably find your body in Deptford.

This was a thing. The sheer numbers registered as having 'drowned at the bridge' show it was a thing for a while. In 1700 Thomas Pennant said about London Bridge, that the people living in the houses built on it "soon grew deaf to the noise of the falling waters, the clamour of watermen, or the frequent shrieks of drowning wretches."

So when we sit there and lament young folks munching down in tide pods, or taking up BASE jumping, or bungee jumping or whatever weird hobby they do which could end in their deaths, do remember- we humans have always had the urge to shoot the moon. Whatever that moon may be. It's in our souls.

Hope you enjoyed.

This whole thing came from an previous post I did about Elizabethan London that was basically just too fricken long. So I decided to just extract fun parts.

(I have sources galore on this but every time I try and post this with the sources it marked it as spam- so will send sources for any who wish em)

Edit: FP and most viral award... it's a quiet day huh?
Sends boobs or pictures of couples blooooping. Be good to one another.

Fun Fact: King Charles I had an elder brother Henry who is believed to have died from typhoid after swimming across the Thames.

That would not surprise me.

TLDR: If you are a drunk Elizabethan man you might die if you take a boat underneath London Bridge, if you survive you are a true lad

Bantz!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I REALLY enjoyed this and it bothers me that it hasn't more upboats. TLDR is an illness. Thank you for sharing this!

It's alright. My style doesn't work for everyone. And besides- you should have the post it came from...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was not aweir of that. Thanks OP!

Interesting post, anyone interested in London who likes a good CSI Elizabeth an London story should try CJ Sansoms's Shardlake books

I think you need to make this a series!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've got another one planned to go up soon.

I'd love some of the (if possible) more entertaining to read sources. PM or replied, w/e shoots your moon.

PM'ed sir.

This made me think "London bridges falling down, falling down"

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'd be really interested in finding out how Americans would pronounce Southwark.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I use to give walking tours to Americans through the region. They get it spot on after a bit I find.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not Deptford... anywhere but Deptford...

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I know right.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I love pageantry and exposition but k.i.s.s. method should always be followed

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I hear ya.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If the Elizabethan London post was too long this must be the abridged edition. I'll let myself out.

8 years ago | Likes 303 Dislikes 3

I think you went A Bridge Too Far with this one.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I came back from three posts to give you this up vote v

(Groans) That... that was awful. Well done

8 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 2

You posted more things OP. I've already read this thing, technically, but this makes me happy because you're getting the credit you deserve.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you. I think I made that last one too long. But ya live and learn. Original content on its way...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah. I'm a historian, so I enjoyed it, but the average person isn't gonna read that. Good luck though!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's true. Thanks for the support. Means quite a bit. Cheers

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

so are you on vacation or do you stay up all night? cuz you posted this like 5am

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Insomnia. But for the record it should have done out at 8pm. It kept refusing to post. Took about 7 tries.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

London Bridge is falling down, falling down, falling down. London Bridge is falling down, my fair Lady.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oddly enough this was supposedly a Viking battle song...

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Afaik that's a sketchy theory at best at this point. IIRC the translator used the nursery rhyme as a base rather than the other way round.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes indeed. Hence the 'supposedly'. We know there were some great battles along the Thames but the song originating then? (Shrugs) probs not

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The bridge burned up quite often. All those houses where a tinder box. There was a channel dedicated to the history of the various bridges >

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

With the name in Lake Havasu City AZ where the 1831 bridge was moved to.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It’s still standing and was shipped to Arizona —Lake Havasu

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Yep. Glad the old gal is still going.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not the 'old' bridge in the pictures, McCulloch bought the 'new' 1830s bridge.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yeah. But the old bridge in the paintings was actually a rebuild of a rebuild.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I would love sources, this is my shit.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Will PM them to you as it won't let me post em...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm going to write a feature length film about this

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And one of the lines will be, "shoot the moon? You fuckin wot m8?"

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I... I would watch that. :)

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah. But more like those places where you can build a settlement on the bridge yanno?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That’s crazy that there were houses in the bridge that people lived on.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Yep. Quite a few. And this is after the fire in the bridge burned them down and killed hundreds.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

They had to clear it after the great fire as it allowed it to spread.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Love this type of history so more please...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thought all that was concept art for the original Dishonored.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You can see where they got the aesthetic from huh?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

oh yea, definately

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Long story short, you would be surprised that people are worshiping the moon instead of shooting at it, but that's another story, ;)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What happened when they "flushed" their toilets?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You mean threw the buckets with their shit in out of the window? The bridge houses were blessed with the fact they could hit water.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I live in Southwark. I like those facts on its history.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I use to live just behind Borough station. To be blunt I miss the place; The George; coffee at the market early doors; it's character.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Southwark is the best damn borough in London in my opinion. And I’ve lived in a fair few over the years.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Agreed. I liked London, but I loved Southwark. Shit- when I got mates move into Greenwich I see it as an excuse to take river bus down :)

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The river bus is so fun.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What's life without a little hyperbole?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Mostly dull I find...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Verily, a merry post! Prithee good poster give us more of thy knowledge

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

S'wounds! I shall sir, and we shall pluck a coxcomb with our style of speaking.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

hyuck hyuck hyuck!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Started off good but you waffled. Can still be funny and whimsical without blabbing.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

(Sorry if it sounded rude, wasn't my intention)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh no. I waffled. It's fine. Criticism valid.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

why was there only 1 bridge?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Kinda what is said below.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Because the Thames is very wide (even wider back then than now) and London was much smaller than it is now.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

so.... money? or just not that much demand for crossing?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

There was no need for two bridges. London was small, and concentrated on the North side, where there was also a port and plenty of boats.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

thx

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It was incredibly expensive to build and maintain. The rent from the buildings on it were to maintain it, but were never enough.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

was there a toll for crossing on them?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No tolls. Commerce would probably take a big hit if they tried that.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Good story but write with a little less "I'm full of my self and look at me smirk throughout the whole thing" for more reading pleasure

8 years ago | Likes 49 Dislikes 40

Thank you. Enjoyed the info but that was difficult.to read.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

It's a fair point. But considering I usually have to do this stuff in a serious manner for a living? I reject that on Imgur. Here? (1/2)

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

(2/2) I'm a dick. Mostly. Sorry.

True. But I am getting better. Verbosity is my default setting.

Exactly
