If you're unfamiliar with chess, the Bongcloud is an internet joke opening. Nakamura plays it in online blitz games just for the fun and has actually beaten grandmasters with it. It's a bad opening, but Carlsen and Nakamura had already qualified for the next stage of this tournament so this game didn't matter.

Amazing joke guys ?

I love that you love chess like me. I’m bad. But I love it! Wish you the best @op

I believe they forced a draw by repetition in the following moves too

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

hahahaha, what a card. that guy. I totally understand this.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Source?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I love how they are both serious until Hikaru starts laughing upon seeing the second move and then Magnus starts laughing at the response.

5 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

What? Why is this funny. I don't get it.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You can't just add a drug reference to a pre-existing word and make it a thing.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 6

Aren't there rules against stalemate, too, if they move back and forth too many times?

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's a draw

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

FRENCHMAN'S CUMSOCK

5 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

I can't even remember the reference but this made me burst out laughing.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It's Tumblr post about trying to learn chess but there's all this like history, "Ahh I see you've opened with the Frenchmans cumsock"

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Cumsock autocorrected from a wrong spelling to the correct spelling by itself, that's probably not a good thing

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

He should have played the famous Severus Snape Knight humping Queen opening

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 34

In all seriousness, I really love that there are jokes in everything humans do. Even in chess you can mess around and make each other laugh.

5 years ago | Likes 148 Dislikes 0

And I totally don't get *why* this in particular is so funny, but I love that they think it is.

5 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

Because by moving the king, you're giving up the ability to castle, and blocking the queen and bishop. It's hard to find a worse move.

5 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

A little more context, this is Hikarus favorite joke opening so it was a shoutout from Magnus.

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Was it so much to ask for me to be born a chess and/or piano prodigy? Fucking hell.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Three repetition of moves make a draw.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

ahahaha, oh did you see that. such tomfoolery. what a display. no clue

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Little ball headed guy goes two steps at first move and then it gets tired and goes only one step at the time :)

5 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 1

Just like me in bed

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But if he tries to pass buy another ball headed guy he can get tripped.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If the castle and the king save up their energy, they can both move at the same time. But only once.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They don't have to move two spaces on their first move

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They did get some flak for this, as they basically refused to play with that draw by repetition.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fuck you @Lassannn! That felt good, you're awesome bud.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

If it can be used to beat grandmasters, how is it a bad opening?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

chess players be like : ah, i see you've gone for the "fourteen year old discovering the political compass" gambit, yes.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I take it I get to uphold the tradition; Fuck you @Lassannn

I told my coworker I beat a former coworker in four moves. He was paying online and I told him what to move. He won in four moves.

Cleaning that has to be a nightmare.

When Naka retreated his king he underpromoted it to a knight and lost

5 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 6

I don't think you're explaining that very well. A king can not be promoted (thus can't be underpromoted). Retreating doesn't "downgrade" a >

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

King either. There is not way to exchange a king for another piece or vice versa.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is that a thing?

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

No.

5 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

Ya I... don't understand.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I can’t find a great explanation that isn’t paywalled, but Naka often underpromotes and it’s cost him. You obviously wouldn’t promote king

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

what

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You don’t know how much further I can dissect the joke without obliterating it. Imagine of, since Carlson made such a silly selection in >

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Magnus Carlsen is fucking wild man. I just don't understand being that good at something.

5 years ago | Likes 337 Dislikes 1

You should see me at being terrible. I'm fucking great at it. Lol

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Hella practice, hella stufying, and just being born the right way all play a part

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

He fucking kills it at FPL too - a fantasy online league for the English Premier League Football.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well he was a chess prodigy as a child so that's already on another level. Beyond that it's practice, playing, practice, playing, etc.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Are we talking chess master wild man, or actual wild man?

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Rita Rudner funny. No wait, wrong reference. John Belushi wild man.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

?noredirect

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well he is norwegian so what do you expect, i actually met him once he is a chill dude

5 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 3

That. That is what I expected

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wait, are Norwegians stereotyped to be great chess players?

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nah it’s an internal joke that doesn’t translate very well, our PM once stated «it’s typicall of norwegians to be great»

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As a (presumably fellow) Norwegian, I can confirm that we are not all that good at something :P

5 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Truth, I am terrible to average at all things.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Dude's a fucking beast. Best endgame player since Capablanca.

5 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 3

Best endgame player ever. He is another level of player. Dude is just a machine at playing best moves. His rating and records are astounding

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

His pawns are somehow always worth pieces, it’s crazy. I love Firouzja and Dubov’s chess, but there’s no denying who the king is.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Its truly insane how he can be so much better than even the other best players in the world.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't think he'll lose a world championship match untli well into his 40s.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I suspect he’ll lose to Firouzja before then barring a catastrophe.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Firouzja is only 18 and top 16 in the world. Give him a little more time and he will surpass Magnus

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Age has somewhat to do with it but Magnus is a whole other level of player. He wont necessarily break Magnus's 2750+ into the 2800s he rides

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I mean. Its wild people in the top 20 will just admit if Magnus is white. Theyre praying for a draw because hes so good at winning white.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He had a run before the pandemic shut down over the board classical where his rating WITH BLACK was 2850.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think he'll surpass Kasparov's what? 15 years of number 1? Magnus might go for 20. He's just so impressive every year

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

After Kasparov, the record is Lasker's 27 years.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Pretending to know what's going on.

5 years ago | Likes 75 Dislikes 0

Okay, so in chess, a really important move you can do is castling, where your king and king's rook sorta switch places (not quite). But if

5 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

you move your king, you can't castle for the rest of the game, even if you put it back. The Bongcloud opening basically has you waste your

5 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

first two turns to have your king get in the way of the queen and king's bishop, and not be able to castle for the rest of the game.

5 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0
