I seem to recall very similar pictures of Somalia from more peaceful times

I'll get downvoted for saying it, but everything is better without Islam. It's just a matter of fact.

Yes but to fight the Russians who invaded

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The Russians were proping up a stable democratic government. We did it to spite them.

They looked fine and happy before Russia tried to change anything by invasion

Yep. Before the USSR invaded, and America supported the mujahideen (early taliban) to fight them, who later ruled and ruined the country.

In fairness there had been numerous coups between this and the Russian invasion, they didn't march in to this supposed utopia.

2/3 Ahmad Shah Massoud for example was mujahideen, kick massive Russian ass. Killed by taliban on 9/10/01

Way more complicated then that and the mujahideen and the Taliban are not the same thing. Yes people who fought did join the Taliban

Totally. 140 characters limits capacity for complexity. Pakistan and ISI also hold a great deal of responsibility for state of Afghanistan.
