Food is a good suggestion. Also try talking to him a lot. He won't understand but he'll know it's a friendly tone and get used to your voice

Animals are smart but you are smarter. Sit in a chair where he can escape, offer food then relax and just talk. Leave him alone & replete.

Absolutley canned smelly cat food, open a can of tuna in water & you'll be his best friend. Leave water & dry food out. Is he a stray?

Patience and proximity. Don't approach him unnecessarily... just be around and let him come to you. Read a book or something.
