I actually can not believe it.

I stopped counting, stopped keeping track, a while ago.
Because life got so hard. I struggled and struggled, and i thought i was gonna fall, slip up, so many times.
So it didnt feel right to celebrate the milestones. Because they didnt feel like that. They just felt like i was avoiding something, just for one more day or one more week, but that sooner or later i would cave in.

It has been extremely lonely, because talking about self harm, is hard. Telling people close to me, that i think about it, is hard. I dont want to worry them, ive done that enough in my lifetime. I want to be strong. I want to be able to figure shit out myself.

These past few months, or really, this whole year, has crushed me. For a zillion different reasons.
But i have, SOMEHOW, been able to not make a single cut. I actually can not, in any way, understand how i have stayed clean.
Today was another bad day. A really sad day. And just "for the hell of it", i decided to check with the calendar how many weeks it has been. And as i counted 40, a round number, a big number, there were actual tears. And i decided i will nok break that strike.

No mattee how hard life is, and how sad and hopeless i feel, a few cuts across the arm has never really solved anything.
Now i will pracrtice russian instead, when the urges hits. Because learning a new and superhard language is the perfect distraction.

Sorry for long text, but thank you if you read it.

Congrats!!!

I wait and wonder how you've been doing. And honestly your post brought me to tears. I'm so proud of you. So very proud. You walked up to that edge and said "No". I can be your friend, if/when you need one, dm me. I've been on that edge too

Hell yes. This is how it happens. I'm at 21 years.

At first every day can feel like a struggle. Then just the bad days. Then I started to distract myself or avoid it by doing other things. And then I jumped straight to those when the bad shit happens. Eventually I only got the urge when someone else brings it up. And now hearing about it doesn't even put me back there.

I don't even know when that change happened. I just realized one day that it was gone.

Thank you for sharing this. It helps.

Sounds awesome to learn a new language. I grew up in Mexican and English speaking households. Lost 98% of Spanish. And I’m pretty bad with English. Haha glad you are being productive. And following through is another plus. I hope you have a great day. Treat yourself.

As a 50 year old you, 25 years and still bearing them, you are defeating that part of yourself. That other part of you that says no, keeps growing stronger, until the very thought of it conjures audible laughter. The other part keeps trying, but.... yeah. It's like a school yard bully getting humiliated after a while. Keep at it!!

Insanely proud of you, and you remind me to be proud of myself too, as I see the fading scars, and to keep working towards our best selves

Self harm was my way of regaining a modicum of control over my chaotic life when I was in the hands of my parental abuser. It makes sense why we do it but when we finally have the freedom to do something else to regain control, it's almost like I had to remind myself that I wasn't stuck in my past. There was a new path forward and it didn't have to start with me destroying myself.
