I don't understand. Destiny 2 devolved into absolute pay-for-play slop. I loved it at first. 110%.
But once they offered new players the ability to "catch up" once they purchased the new DLC was such a slap in the face to me and my team that grinded raids for HOURS.

That's where you're quite wrong.
Unless the game has "INTERNET REQUIRED" on the front, next to the ESRB, then the full game is on the disc. Nintendo's Cartridges are almost always fully on disc, except the Game-Key Carts which have a prominent warning.

They still need to be installed due to technical limitations of optical drives and performance, not to mention it’s far more expensive to ask for 200gb plus discs. It’s time to move on to the real issue which is licensing vs ownership. Again, physical media is a distraction which has many drawbacks while giving you an illusion of ownership in current state.

What are you talking about? Current Bluray discs can store 128GB of data, or 200GB if they're double-sided. Also nothing stopping developers from using multiple discs like they did before Bluray. And I highly doubt anyone would give a shit if Sony announced they were moving to a new format of physical media that uses flash storage, like an SD card does.

The difference is that people know Sony is going to take away their games and shut everything down, especially once they release the next console. Steam does not have that issue and Valve has a proven track record of doing the right thing when it comes to making sure people have access to what they paid for or are refunded. Sony has a track record of doing the exact opposite, which is why the story that they just removed access to movies people bought without refund made the disc issue blow up.

The reality is PS5 is too expensive to buy, so their hardware sales are in the toilet. Then they stupidly are promoting they are stopping to make disks. They could have shut up about it and just sold very few disks. But now their stock is lower. Just to show executives are absolutely morons.

That is because all the parts on it are more expensive. As it is they aren't selling enough of them to make much profit from the hardware. The discless version is predicted to cost $660 to make. They need the software sales, but they keep putting their foot in their mouth.

It had lots of paying players and tons of cyclically returning players and it did make pretty good money, but it doesn't matter when somehow the upkeep and continuous development costs were ~$6M per month, and when it did make bank around expansion releases that money went to executive bonuses and other crap, not to the studio.

I legitimately dealt with people who basically drank, sweat, and showered Destiny/Bungie, and those people legitimately thought that Bungie could do no wrong, and those same people are one of the biggest reasons WHY I quit D2 entirely.
I just hold grudges towards Destiny 2, and those grudges manifest TENFOLD towards the toxic side of Bungie's fanbase.

They should've just kept Overwatch as it was, ESPECIALLY since it's just "Overwatch" again in it's namesake, and if they ACTUALLY WANTED to make a separate game mode that is more PvE & purely co-op focused: they should have JUST done that.
Also would have allowed A TON of development in the world's lore, and character stories and interactions, too.

It was a full, fleshed out story.
Each class/race had different start zones and slightly different story perspectives, and the Traveler was more of a parasite in the end, feeding off the societies it "helped"

The "no Disc" Debate may promote the sales of the standard PS5 with discs. As Sony made it clear that buying a PS5 with Diskdrive is the cheaper option as it is the only way to buy used games and sell your old games.

God I hate the Game-Key Cart, but Nintendo isn't to blame for them.
Since 2015? companies have been putting minimal data on the disc and require you to download the rest of the game.
Which lead to the creation of https://www.doesitplay.org/ which tells you if the game needs the net or can be played off the disc.
One of the biggest offenders was Doom: Dark Ages which had an 8MB file on a Blu-Ray which just told the system to download the game. At least Nintendo made the warning label prominent.

I don't care about physical media. If the software on the disc is written to be online-only, then access to it can still be disabled remotely.
The actual policies and their implementation are what matter.
To that end, I have no problems buying games on Steam because Valve has earned my trust over the last nearly 23 years. Games I own have been removed to the store, but they've stayed on my account. Games I own have been broken by OS updates, and I can mod them.

My main online multiplayer games in the 90s/2000s were Quake 2 and Counterstrike (beta Half-Life mod all the way through CS:Source). With those pretty sure you could host a dedicated server even without buying the game. And yeah, modding was pretty common, I even ran a Gun Game server for CS:S in my dorm room so students could play against each other, cause the connection to the outside was bad.

Under devs' agreement, they're allowed to sell copies of the game on their own website where they keep 100% of the proceeds, as long as they don't undercut the Steam price.
An extreme example: imagine a dev listing their game on Steam for $1000, then saying "if the game looks good to you, it's on our site for $10".

Yes but that extreme example is not what is happening. How is any other store supposed to have any chance at success if Steam is one of the only places to get real traction for volume sales so they can essentially use that weight against devs to force them to always give them the same sale price so Steam can get that 30% slice as much as possible. Like that does not sit well with me and I don't think its healthy for the gaming landscape. Arguable if a law was broken but still.

Wolfire isn't using a third-party store, their alternative to Steam is the Humble Store, when Humble as a company was legally spun out of Wolfire.
Overgrowth is listed on Steam for $20, and they wanted to sell it on their site for less than that.
