That gear is a pretty thick piece of steel, you'd need to heat treat the entire thing in an oven to harden or anneal it. Just welding the perimeter and flipping it as you go wouldn't be enough.

I watch some of these guys weld cast differentials and cast front axles back together. On one the differential was cracked in half and they put it back together. Put it on a super heavy duty truck.

Those welds would not be as strong as the original, which already broke under torque. The new threaded insert, welded onto place is much more capable of withstanding torque. The gear teeth are the expensive and hard to replace part.
it didnt break it was cut, you can clearly see over cuts from an angle grinder in the corners where the perfectly straight "breaks" meet. Also they contaminated the weld when they used oil to screw them together
Nice and all but that piece clearly got cut out for this demonstration, that and I've never seen a gear break that didn't involve like a fifth of the teeth ripping off.
I don't mind them damaging a gear for a demo, but, yeah.. not exactly a realistic demo to repair a break in a way that would never happen while having all the pieces in a way that would then require no extrapolation when creating the finished product
that would be much harder and more expensive.. for one, it's a spinning part.. therefore it needs to be balanced.. doing the work to figure out the exact correct steel to replace the original part to make sure the density of the old material vs the new material line up would be astronomically more expensive than just replacing the the entire center with a single uniform piece (not to mention the uneven, compared to the center, welds would throw off the balance even if you did that) /cont
