My tiny human wants to help!
Loofah grow on a vine. We put ours on a cattle panel. The darker ones are dried out.
With the skin removed. Ready to cut to size and use.
Seeds from inside the loofah. These are from a single loofah!!
Goku
I harvested one when I was like 15. I brought home, had no idea what it was and my mum told me to let it dry in the sun, then peel it

Quads4theGods
Ooooo! I did a learn! Thx
DancingButterfly
I remember my grandma had a plant like this in her gard and anytime we would visit we would go home with loofahs. ☺
jbilly90
Yup gma used to grow these. I remember playing with em as a kid
woderwoman
ActuallyAPirate
What the fuck
paanallu
My Grandfather had a loofah farm. I still have the last one he gave me the last time I saw him. Can never bring myself to use it.
ilovecosmetics
Mind blown!
ediblepain
Woohoo! I'm growing Luffah too. Great job OP
ennuihippie
Thank you! Good luck with yours!
SlappySamsonite
BioniCrinse
My dad grew these when i was a kid and currently is now as well can't wait to have one again!
StalkerMagnet
So neat! I have a few vines but all the flowers seem to drop off instead of becoming fruit.
ennuihippie
I live in the southeast US and they did well with the climate here. Do you think maybe it was temp? Do you live someplace fairly warm?
LupusLilium
Now you have to start up an online market '100% organic loofahs'.
Flash635
Non GMO, fair trade. Glute free.
LupusLilium
All of that adds up to $200+ per loofah!
appatheflyingbison
iamnoman378
New hipster trend. Do you BUY your loofahs? I grow my own.
Flash635
Non GMO, organic, fair trade.
Fzoid
#1 Honey, I shrunk the kids
Gufysk8er
Holy shit, you meant like a loofah loofah. Didn't know they were grown.
UrKungFuNoGood
I always assumed it was a type of coral...
DeathsDeathOfRats
Me too!
NervousKneeGrow
I thought they were a sponge
SpitefulRed
Every time I hear loofah I think about that ridiculous transcript in which Bill O'Reilly told some woman that he wanted to bathe her
SpitefulRed
naked body with "a falafel sponge"

You're just making shit up.
Khaleeeeesi
Bro I googled it it's real
ProfaneSanction
Believe half of what you hear and none of what you read on the internet
MechaGandalf
grow some yourself. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Package-of-45-Seeds-Luffa-Gourd-Luffa-aegyptiaca-Non-GMO-Seeds-by-Seed-Needs/618432966
ProfaneSanction
I'll just grow them in my fungus garden and add unicorn fertilizer
mydadhasaharrypotter
I'm going to need a banana here, for scale!
ennuihippie
I totally thought about that haha! I'm gonna say it's two or two and a half bananas long.
mydadhasaharrypotter
That's a big loofa!
kkaranc
This is a vegetable here in India. High fiber, needless to say
Taliska
Too cool! where and how did you get seeds to grow that?!
ennuihippie
I ordered them from amazon. They were in an odd, non-descript package and took foreverrrrr to arrive!
Taliska
Oh Cool... I looked at some web sites but they all want credit card details for payment and I dont own a credit card... :(
Taliska
Where are you based? what kind of climate do those things prefer?
Chrispybobispy
I always thought it was so sorta weird sea sponge until some buddy of mine grew them
kittymack
I think you've legitimately educated a shit tonne of people today. Happy washing +1
ShinyMatador
There should be an imgur award for this.
kittymack
I agree!!! Educating the masses award.
ennuihippie
Would gladly accept an award haha
lurkeylurkeychickenturkey
+1 for correct spelling of tonne
kittymack
Thank you. I didn't realise it was spelt another way?
lurkeylurkeychickenturkey
+1 again for correctly spelt. Tonne is the British way.
Elfalpha
Tonne is metric, Ton is imperial. Neither is wrong, technically.
kittymack
I'm all about the metric :)
lurkeylurkeychickenturkey
I just say tonne is British because why the fuck not
ieatpiecesofshiplikeyouforbreakfast
What zones will these grow in. Pretty awesome.
ennuihippie
I live in the southeast US. I think they grow in Asia. They have to have a long enough warm season to mature and then dry out.
MoreAwesomerDan
I was just checking this: zone 6 if you start with a plant, zone 7 from seeds. Not the easiest to grow.
MoreAwesomerDan
See comment below on growing zones, replied to wrong comment accidentally
EclecticEccentric
I always thought a loofah was a coral or sea cucumber... well TIL it's a plant
AntaNce
you really thought you were scrubbing with a dead animal? I guess sponges are, so......
lurkeylurkeychickenturkey
Sponges are a sea animal.
chillFlamingo
Same boat!
DreadPierateRoberts
Yep I remember reading that
KittyDreams4Real
Scoot over, I'm getting in too.
tinyruin
Interesting! are they like pumpkins?
TheMajesticHarpyEagle
Same family of plants, yes.
Nimafox
Yes kinda, the luffa is in the cucurbits family. This includes cucumbers, water melons, and squash.
arcticdemondog
Like cucumbers! We have recipes for them here in the PH. If it dries out, it becomes loofah.
ennuihippie
I didn't ever taste it but I believe it has a consistency between zucchini or cucumber.
CatsReallyDoTasteGoodInStew
I've eaten some before, and they are squishy and slimy when cooked and taste BITTER
BowDown2Me
If it goes out of season it gets bitter. usually picked when baby arm size. Asians love em. I stir fried it with neckle clams. It is sweet!
CatsReallyDoTasteGoodInStew
I'm Asian, but I absolutely despise them :\
CatsReallyDoTasteGoodInStew
And, when peeling the skin off, the puss or slime makes the loofah hard to get a grip of, and leaves a residue that smells horrible
davebeastly
Are you describing foreplay or eating loofahs?
CatsReallyDoTasteGoodInStew
And hard to get rid of
davebeastly
Definitely sex.
BlastTheStrongestHero
Loofahs are a plant!? What the fuck. I've been a professional gardener for years.
mechasd
Clearly not a very good one...
crcinau
Agreed. I'm nearly 40.... don't fuck with my world view!
MichaelHames
Makes sense if you think about it a fibrous material is usually plant related
probshouldntsayitbut
VinnRhodes
loofah, otherwise known as "pashte"
SpitefulRed
They're in the gourd/squash/melon family
ennuihippie
Video I made about harvesting: https://youtu.be/Uuljknm2Qgk Heads up- my accent is terrible and I'm not gorgeous
lgshort
If you harvest them young, they are tender and delicious
wellthatsjustyouropinion
growing pot in your mom's basement does not a professional gardener make.
kittymack
I grew these as a child on our hobby farm. We all had mass amounts of loofas :)
davebeastly
What's a hobby farm? Is this what rich people call a regular farm?
kittymack
My understanding is that it's small and something you do for fun vs actual farming for income.
davebeastly
So a garden then.
kittymack
We owned 1 breeding pig, 3 eating pigs, 20 chickens, 1 rooster, 10 ducks, 1 turkey. Our garden was about 20m x 30m. So yeah a 'garden'
yummmmm
that's funny. i would make a big ole ginormous pile of them and jump off the roof of my house onto it
dtvetter
Right! I thought loofah came from a sponge from the ocean.
beachbetty
Same!!!! Thought it was from the ocean!!
canibFrank
So did both my wife and I. How is this not a sea sponge?
BlastTheStrongestHero
I just thought it was extruded plastic of some kind.
MackdomblesDarbleChaiseBarga
It's often a polyester mesh. Depends on whether you're talking about natural loofah sponges or shower poufs.
revcleo
No, this is an ocean sponge: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0223/1005/files/Sea_Sponges_-_Edited.jpg?4467

ennuihippie
I thought the same thing!! Saw a buzzfeed article last year that told me different so I had to try it myself!
sharkhugs
Do they work well?
ennuihippie
I haven't bathed with one yet but when I was cleaning them, it felt great. Softer than a store bought one. Can't wait to exfoliate!
Sugarbritches21
So are these the ones you can shower with? If so, will you send me one?
ennuihippie
Yes and yes. Send me your address.
yummmmm
cool!
mdm8036
Me too? You're awesome.

ennuihippie
