Then the (probably white) dog screamed "walnuts thrown" and then yelled "I'm bit"(even tho it was NOT bit), which encouraged another dog to react. Both dogs 'reacted' over and over, including reloading their reaction. The imprisoned squirrel somehow escaped uninjured, despite the original dogs (best?) efforts.
There's different squirrel species and some are reddish. But for Eastern Gray Squirrels, you get color morphs--black and white are both possible, and black's really common in some places. Piebald also occurs!
It's actually going the other direction here. They've found that the black ones retain heat better, so even though it's recessive, it's become the majority because of that advantage. I wonder if it'll spread to other cold regions.
We have them in and around Washington DC. They were introduced by Teddy Roosevelt in the early 1900s from Ontario. They are all over the region now, but grey is more prevalent. There are probably 10 black squirrels to 50 grey in my neighborhood in Maryland.
