They do this for citrus orchards in Arizona as well. It's actually less wasteful than watering daily:

I doubt this is how they're typically watered outside of this location. Anyway, saturating a plant's roots entirely with water will actually kill/drown/rot it. Not usually a good idea, but I imagine the roots stretch quite a ways on these guys.

You flood-water them once every few days. A lot of water all at once so that it sinks deep and the roots have to dig down to reach it.
