Good question. The general rule was if you're under a roof, don't take pictures. I got that vibe everywhere, not just tourist spots.

You can fly on the cheap if you keep a lookout, and backpacking saves money. I suggest Nagasaki prefecture, lots of wonderful spots.

You pick up the basics, other than that, if I had issues getting food, they have menus at the register so you can point at what you want

If I needed to speak a sentence, I would pull out google translate and go from there. Plus a lot of people speak English there surprisingly!
