We would make big cities, and fill it with dozens of frogs. We would have them elect a mayor (the best jumper) and designate jobs for each of them. Radio hosts, construction workers, bankers, everything. One time we tried a colluseum, but the frogs had little lust for blood (or that's what they wanted us to think), so it turned into a rock venue.
After not seeing a childhood friend for about 20 years, I mailed him a yellow Ferrari identical to the one we used to fight over. No letter. No sender name. Nothing but the car. He called me the moment it arrived.
I used to build army bases and pill boxes for my plastic army men in my parents garden. I was gardening 15 years later (I was maintaining my mother's garden) I unearthed a pill box with 4 british paratroop toy soldiers. I carry them in the glove box of my car. No-one gets left behind. I'm 50, But inside I'm 10.
As a kid I was at the county fairgrounds digging in some out of the way dirt to run cars down a slope and some bastard cop came over and tried to say I was destroying public property. Haven't trusted anyone in uniform since.
I remember piling stones up for bridges, digging holes for tunnels and all the fun of car chases with my neighbour. I still remember an accidental collapse of a bridge that put a dent in a police car, and I even found a buried corvette 20 years after I lost it.
I actually tried playing with some action figures alone in my bedroom like 7 years ago and it's really fucking weird. What I miss is the feeling I had as a kid when playing, it really doesn't feel like that anymore.
I still have mine actually, they're just store in a box that I haven't opened for like 5 years along with other old toys that for some reason I can't get myself to throw them away.
My friends and I would steal some cement at the concrete factory and mix it with water at my house, pour it on the rocks and spend literally hours designing "the city" we were making
And using old bottles and cans to make skyscrapers and building. Probably got close to catching a few nasty disease but eh that's what vaccines are for
That's not how vaccines work. If you were being exposed to rabies or smallpox or polio or mumps or something, sure, but they're not going to stop basic infections.
It didnt happen often but my dad would always buy me two of the same car. One to play with & one to keep in the box. I still have about 40 of them all in the original boxes.
just a few days ago, my son said how he can’t wait to take his 1 yr old son to the beach this summer to build a track just like this. Such a strong memory from his childhood
I just recounted the time I was doing this in a giant dirt pile. I was digging and in the middle of the dirt pile I felt something soft. So as a kid with no fear I put my hand back into the hole and grabbed and pulled it out. It was a toad the size of my fist.
We would put those tiny fountain fireworks in the mouth of a toy dragon it would demolish the army men. We may have been a bit like sid from toy story in hindsight. But shit it was fun!
I sold my 50 year old Matchbox cars, they were played with every day like this. Potential buyers seemed to feel an 8 year old should keep them in the original packaging, never played with.
Somewhere at Home I've got a tub and at the top is my favorite, a 69-72 Cutlass 442, yellow with black hood stripes. I loved that as much as the deLorean that lept out of the back of my dad's Jeep on a New Jersey turnpike back in 2000. Sad times indeed.
My Dad's only task at Christmas was to hand-pick several Hot Wheels or Matchbox cars and one Matchbox Road King for me. They all got taken out of the package but they were never to go outside. It's been 50 years and I've still got 'em all.
Probably trying to complete a set, as I did in 1968. They were numbered, there was a dump truck with snow plow I never got, was discontinued just as I started collecting
I don't get posts like this. I don't feel nostalgia that way. Yeah we don't have that sweet innocence anymore but we have so much more. We have discovered love and art and being happy because you're not a douchebag. We understand science and relationships and our own selves, and the natural world in ways kids can't even dream of. Yes we pay taxes and our backs hurt now and we're not as pretty as we used to be. You can look back and appreciate the past for what it was without feeling sad about it
That’s right. Might be even more enjoyable! I just got a 1/2 speed remaster of Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers. Brought it to a lunch meeting upstairs from the record store and felt like a little kid at show and tell!

No army men, but we’ll let it pass…
AnoukdeR
I vividly recall prolly the last one I built in my sandbox. Semi garage-ish thingy, two floors, nice ramps. I miss those days.

Micromachines for the win.

The suspension on some of the luxury models was top notch. I had a Benz 600SEL that was buttery smooth on dirt roads.

My cars are still buried in the yard. Dad decided to do some work and didn't see my secret base.

The good old days can be now. Throw away your societal conditioning. Play with yourself. But not in that way. The other way. No. never mind.
Fauxcused
I watched my kid when he was young spend over an hour discovering different ways to destroy clods of dirt.

So…. Anyone know WHY it’s the underground tunnel and bridge? Vs above ground bridge-arch? I kid you not I’ve always done that same dig too.
cronkey
You can still do this if you want
dilgar2000
Not if you want to be able to get up afterwards.

Anyone else thought this was an aerial shot of a quarry for a minute?

As a 65+ year old male lost count how many times did that as a kid

I remember spending all recess digging the track and never having time to drive the cars on it.
marquizzo
My kid and I could spend an hour building train-tracks together. Once they're done, we only play on them for about 10 mins before moving on.
echonite
Sometimes building the tracks were more fun than actually using them.

Then there's me, who got in trouble for digging elaborate Egyptian tombs into my aunt's raised flowerbeds after coming home from primary school.

Grew up in a trailer park. Best dirt city under those trailers

Those are a lot better cars than I had in my dirt.

I'm 33 and I still want to do this. I'm sure I'll feel very stupid after trying it, but at least I'd get it out of my system.

Just have fun! There's so little joy in the world, go experience it without shame

Ah, I can see that. I hope you find some sweet, sweet serotonin soon, friend!

May I send you matchbox cars for the occasion?

I can distinctly remember the feeling of my hand breaking through the other end of the tunnel and feeling like a million bucks
esparadrapo
My brother and I dug from opposite sides and breaking through and touching was like rescuing a miner. "We got you! You're gonna make it!".

"Dirt... dirt... dirt... WIGGLY BITS! THAT'S MY FRIEND'S HAND!"

That's a memory I didn't realize I had forgotten for three decades until just now.

A rescue, or just plain digging?
gamer2k4
The digging until you feel your friend's fingers as he digs from the other side.

Just make sure the fireworks aren’t too old. After a couple years, the fuses are WAY too fast.

You're decades too late with that bit of information, that was learned the quickly explosive hard way
Werewolfoflondon
Same. Fortunately, my hand was just far enough away.

That's because you were being asked by "collectors," who believe that literally every chunk of plastic will become worth millions.

My Hot Wheels were set on fire with old school model glue once I was done wearing the wheels off them.
badgesweedontneednostinkingbadges
If you played with your Matchbox cars, they're no longer "collectables", they're antiques. And I'm super glad you had fun playing with them as a kid.

Imagine that, children playing with toys...
JahNoodles
The difference is the word "value".
SeasonedCitizen
I put them on eBay, around 50 of them in the 60s era carrying case. Auction started at $1, with the caveat that shipping might be costly.
fantabuloustimewaster
Too many people confuse value with price.
thisismysociallife
Well I fell like they have more value when used like this then put on a shelf
mybrothersmario
Same, sitting on a shelf they may have a high price, but they are of 0 value.
pixelsnader
Cars new in packaging have high potential value. Cars that are played with have realized value.
jobustevens
I stumbled upon a reddit sub for matchbox cars. To each his own, but the lengths some of them go to find specific models was strange to me.
MarvinSuggsMuppaphone
Some people are looking for the car they once had or their dream car. If they can’t have the real thing, at least they can have a miniature.
Mxlespxles
I want a goddamn Lincoln Mark VII, and a few years ago, I would have paid a lot of money for one.

Doesn't have to be the last time. I may go into my back yard today and build a sweet track for my kids.

May meant as I might or might not do it. Depends on how I felt after work and how much crap I need to do.
