The FT-85

Rounded and polished spine

Rounded and polished spine

Rounded handle

Tek Lok compatible Kydex sheath

After molding, draw lines on.

Molding in press. Heat Kydex to 325, let it soak for 3-5 minutes, wrap around knife and apply clamp. Let sit for 20 minutes.

I do two layers of painters tape on the blade. A stick is added to the tip for drainage.

Finished handles and blade, ready for Kydex.

After grinding to shape on belt sander, hand finish everything to 500 grit. This'll take a few hours.

Cut and grind the front of the handle scales after matching up holes. Use a two part epoxy to hold everything together. Clean off the front of the handle scales with a paper towel that's lightly soaked in acetone.

Grind to shape, finish up flats with a worn 36 grit belt, and grind bevels. I use Cubitron II 36+ followed by Trizact Gator A300 and A160. Then put masking tape on the flats and polish with fine Scotch Brite. Buff with Noxon 7 Metal Polish.

A blank I cut from barstock and had heat treated last summer. Grind to shape with 24 grit Norton Blaze belt being extremely careful of heat.

Thanks for looking guys! I'd love to hear what you think and answer any questions you have about handmade knives in the comments.

I like your work. About how much would one of these cost? How did you get into blacksmithing?

Mitch, I need your help, I recently bought a sword (tipsy buy from a renaissance fair ) and it not a sharpened sword- but i need it to be.

Norton economy stone. Use the coarse side to rough in the edge and the fine side to finish it. Just be fairly consistent about the angle.

okay, next question- is there a oil, or something you could point me to using to keep it from rusting? can I use my gun oil on it?

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

WD-40 is great at keeping things from rusting. You can use water to lubricate the Norton stone. 3 in 1 oil or honing oil would work too.

thank you- I appreciate the time! have a good one.

WD-40 gives no long term protection, it's solvent based and evaporates pretty quickly. its fine while you work on it, but finish with 3-in-1
