For the most part, they can actually be domesticated unlike other wild cats. Which is part of the reason the trade in cubs is so bad.

Hollywood was the reason for their massive population decline in the 20th century. Especially in the 20's and 60's.

Poaching mostly seems to be for cubs though. There isn't nearly as much of a demand for Cheetah fur as Marilyn caused in the 60's.
