There is a rope/string behind him. He went back too far with the board and it caught the string and he hit himself.

I honestly thought they hooked it at first on purpose. You can hardly see it.

perhaps to try to help out if the guy was caught or something. obviously there's little to be done but it looks like he was just reacting.
