When you thrift shop, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose.

Front page edit: I’m glad people got a laugh out of this.

For context: Normally it pains me to see electronics go to waste. However, the guy who bought the printer is a software engineer and repairs old electronics as a hobby. He’s among the smartest people I know and can repair just about anything. I’ve seen him bring plenty of things back to life with a soldering iron and an oscilloscope. If he decided this wasn’t worth fixing, it wasn’t worth fixing.

I have HP laserjet 2200D - works great.. got it free when non-profit threw it away.

The title is the best thing about this post.

I genuinely thought they were excited to buy it cheap so they could destroy it. The internet has ruined me.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Dude its a printer. Fuck printers.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

When my printer dies, I invite people over, BYOB (bring your own bat) it's fun.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Probably something simple to fix, based on his sophisticated diagnosis.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

my mom still has an HP laserjet 4MP that still works....

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What cartridge costs just $25?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Inkjet

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, FUCK YOU! Those LaserJets were indestructible. Probably out of toner or very likely drivers don't work anymore

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

The rubber rollers dry rot and won't feed paper. They can be overhauled though.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh yeah, I used to clean them with alcohol every half a year or so.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Seriously all the HP models let you print the test page from the menu. Every thrift store has an outlet to test electrics. 1 sheet of paper.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not everyone knows how to print that test page. It’s not hard, just not common knowledge.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

True. It was more of a PSA for anyone buying a used printer at a thrift store. You can google how to print the test page from your phone.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why would you want that printer?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

His middle finger looks like his index finger.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you keep the recipe u have 7 days to return electronics

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Our company must have had hundreds of these damn printers

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you got replacement parts and fixed it, it'd still be cheaper than an ink cartridge,

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wasted? No, invested into mental health care!

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I cannot disagree with you on wasting money. Plenty of parts you could have taken off it first.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just get a Brother HL-L2350DW when it inevitably goes on sale for $80. The toner lasts forever, is dirt cheap, and it's reliable.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I miss my laser jet 4, it was a workhorse

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This happens when you use the “letter” format and A4 paper is in the tray (not “lettterhead”)

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The Goodwill around here allows returns.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Mine doesn't. But I live in a small town so most of the stuff they have is crap. They probably didn't want to accept it in the first place.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm the most tight fisted person I know and I don't think even I would have it in me to try and get my money back from a charity shop.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I found one for $20. Only prints in black & white but it's a laser printer. I buy toner maybe twice a year and it's less than ink cartridge.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I got a free Laserjet 4000 back in 2010. Put in a $25 cartridge. It's still going.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Those things are fucking tanks. It does run, just very slowly and noisily.

6 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

I bought one of those used for University. The used cartridge lasted all 3 years of my bachelor printing thousands of pages without problems

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

laser printers are not noisy

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

the older hp laserjets where abit.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

threw an Office Space event: fellow employees came to blast the hell out of a printer belonging to Most Hated Exec and it was a huge success

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Try turning it off and back on again

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Early lesson...if it’s an electronic there’s usually a reason it got donated. Especially if it’s something with a bunch of plastic parts.

6 years ago | Likes 100 Dislikes 2

I've found plenty good working electronics. They also let you test it before you purchase it.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have a spare PC Monitor from Goodwill I got for $20 and have been using solidly for over 5 years.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They have great stuff in their dumpsters that they don't think are appropriate or worth putting out. My friends and I used to find all kinds

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Of cool and weird stuff when we were teenagers.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I snagged a $600 Paradigm powered sub a few months ago for $25. Works great!

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nice. I picked up a pair of ADS L1290 for $25 as well. Often ppl just don't know what they have when they donate items.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That or they're too rich to care.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Then again another early lesson is people are absolute retards and most stuff that's broken is easily fixed / not actually broken.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Often times they won't know the value of something either. I've found a ton of old hi-fi speakers and audio equipment that get donated.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fully 50% of the time its just dead fuses. The other 50% tho....

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you find literally anything at Goodwill that's not a clothing item, it's broken. Toy? Electronic? Disk/Card/Memory component? Broken.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

that's a lie. i regularly go to goodwill hunting for retro consoles. i've found gamecubes, PS1s and even an xbox there that all work great.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

they were missing cords and controllers, sure. but 20 bucks for a game cube? fuck yeah imma get that.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Not "a lie", but probably depends on where you live. My goodwill doesnt even know what a "game" is and I'd imagine many others don't too--

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

-- but I'm glad you've actually gotten some bargain out of thrift-shopping!

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Me and my friends have actually created a habit of going to our local Goodwill to mock the things we find. We've found 12 pairs of --

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

-- specific eyeglasses, 20+ types of canes/crutches, and literally over a hundred sets of female sanitary products and adult diapers.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

One of my favorite youtubers (BrutalMoose) tried to go to a bunch of thrift shops to find VHS's, and couldn't use half of them because--

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

-- they had private home footage. Who the fuck benefits from you donating a home video of your child's first christmas?

This swipe

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

You would never find a driver that worked for that.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

included with windows most likely

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't goto a Racetrack next time, easy as hell online

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just checked, last driver was for Windows XP. Sorry kids.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It'd be plug and play here.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Damn it feels good to be a gangsta... What the fuck is PC Load Letter?!?!?

6 years ago | Likes 310 Dislikes 3

But I'm not printing a letter, I'm printing a photo!

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I was sure that song played while they were destroying the printer. Turns out it's later during a montage of Peter living his best life 1/2

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

2/2 The printer killing song is called "Still" by the same band, Geto Boys. Blew my mind when I searched the printer video for the song

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Huh. Funny how memory does that. I was sure it was during the printer-cide scene

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Paper Carriage. Load letter sized paper (8.5x11), instead of legal (8.5x17)

6 years ago | Likes 62 Dislikes 1

Much prefer A4

6 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

My dad had this printer when I was growing up and I recall how glorious the Jets of Lazer were

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Best printer message is still "lp0 on fire": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lp0_on_fire

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Does the USA use A4 yet? Really curious.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They don't use A4, they don't use SI units, they don't have a royale with cheese.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

[Laughs in DIN A4]

6 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

DIN A4 = Deutschen Institut für Normung DIN 472

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I know you're just being funny. But RTFM.

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Or we live in the rest of the world and use standard paper sizes like A4.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

If it used A4, it'd say "PC LOAD A4" - still boils down to reading comprehension.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"PC load letter" each word has multiple meanings, none of which obviously imply "out of paper", especially not "letter" if you're not USA.
