Near-field mixing produces great results if you know the space and have accurate monitoring. I do mix jobs in a room slightly bigger (1/2)

than this on an HD rig for jobs that get mastered and end up in film/commercial/FM/etc. You'd never guess the mix was done in an apartment.

I do audition my work on a few different playback rigs including a giant pair of Klipsch mains, but all the mixing happens in a ~8x8ft area.

Actually the bigger your room is the longer the feedbacks will be. Most important is shape and composition of the walls to absorb the sound.
