I will now spend the next 45 minutes telling you why this movie was trash. FP edit! Thank you guys for reassuring me that I'm not insane for thinking this. I will now give my aforementioned rant for the uninitiated. Sorry for formatting and grammar, I'm on mobile. ***spoilers*** What I liked - If you aren't a fan of the anime/manga then going in this is just another American supernatural teen drama. Nothing particularly special. It has some funny moments that stand out like meeting Ryok. It's well directed and well shot. The scenes with Ryok make the movie worth watching. The plot is thin compared to the anime but if you read into the implied motives and into the lines like Mia saying she's "just a cheerleader" which is why she's so enamored with all this power then you get a more complete story. What I didn't like - literally everything else. The first guy he kills is just some douchebag kid. They refer to him as a sociopath to justify it but that feels more like flavor text than reality. This was completely unnecessary emotional high school drama. Light (why the hell did they keep his name light for an American audience?) is a smart kid, but a mastermind he is not. Ryok seems more malicious in this adaptation which is the only reason I can see him giving Light the book. He's smart enough to not get caught for a little bit but eventually he's gonna get caught. Speaking of being smart...you're going to invite knock-off Kristin Stewart to accompany you on your murder spree five minutes after meeting her? My eyes got damaged from rolling them so hard at this. I haven't watched the anime in a while but I'm fairly sure several book rules are ignored. Notedly the "heart attack" rule. The way L "figures out" its Light works (sort of) but has no TRUE logic to it. What if Kira was setting light up? What if Kira was the dad? What if Kira was simply misdirecting them again like he did with the "Japanese" name? Nahhhhh, must just be light. And the coup de gras of garbage that this movie is...I didn't get to see light die at the end. This little shitbag deserved to die more than Light in the anime and i didn't get to see it. Shame. In summary - there's a lot more nit picking I could do but I'll just say this...they could have changed just a feeeeeew more things here or there and made this into a seperate story set in the same universe with Ryok tying it together. That would have been immensely more satisfying than the heap they tried to pass off as an adaptation.
hentaiprincessluvsimgur
It felt like really expensive, but poorly written, fan fiction. If you're a fan of the manga or anime watch so you can complain with others
hotdognachos69
cspb
I enjoyed the movie, the anime was way better. My favourite part was the screaming scene meeting ryuk that had me in stitches
newrecord
We all need a death note
Polarbit
Oh neat I just watched that earlier as well. It was pretty not good.
SluppyB
Thank you! It was so disappointing :(

THEY DIDNT HAVE THE AGGRESSIVE CHIP EATING SENE
PorneliusHubertII
They ignored rules but added a shit ton of unnecessary ones to make the plot work. Iirc light said there were like 95 rules in the Note.
ImKimJongUnAndEverythingIsFine
Yeah the burning page rule wasn't in there. And writing Ryok's name in the book I don't think would work to begin with.
PorneliusHubertII
In the manga it was stated that you cannot kill a shinigami by writing it's name. And it is Ryuk.
ImKimJongUnAndEverythingIsFine
I'm pretty committed to spelling it incorrectly at his point, so I'm just gonna roll with it.
PorneliusHubertII
Lol fair enuf
cogs
Unfamiliar with both the manga and anime, so no preconceived notions going in. It was still annoyingly weak. A one-shot popcorn movie.
ImKimJongUnAndEverythingIsFine
Yeah agreed. It had no clear direction between wanting to be its own thing and an adaptation at the same time.
cogs
Shame, too, it's a great concept regardless of the provenance, but L was about the most idiotic character I've seen, (1/2)
cogs
and Ryuk came off more like Green Goblin than his own thing. This whole movie was phoned in. (2/2)
Cereaza
Everything involving L bothered me (and I've never read the Manga).

That first one is me when people start talking about GoT. Incidentally. Fuck. That. Movie. Jesus fuck it was so bad
Dickweed4206969
I couldnt make it through the first minute
RenaissanceFaireMan
Wow, first minute? How do you watch ANY movie?!
IThinkYouGotAFineBrainJack
You guys made an American version movie? Why don't you just watch the Japanese one? It's old but it was pretty good.
breakingcode
Because most Americans are appallingly stupid when it comes to things like this and need americanized (ie ruined) versions of everything.
ImKimJongUnAndEverythingIsFine
Japanese live action one was pretty terrific IIRC. This was bad, even if you'd never seen the anime.
DaveGrohlsBrokenLeg
I'm really sorry everyone, I have watched the film but never seen the series and I thought it was really good
allibaster12
Same
Emby
It's okay if you don't know anything about the original cast. Everyone was much more... cunning. The netflix counterparts are so...
Emby
disappointing. So stupid and emotional. Light was a better liar, and didn't freak out over everything in public. L was extremely logical.
Emby
But yeah, you don't miss out on anything by skipping the original. I treated the film as an original story w/ borrowed concepts. It's... OK.
ImKimJongUnAndEverythingIsFine
That's understandable. If you enjoyed it watch the anime. It's muuuuch different so depending on WHY you liked the movie you may not like it
TamalesDeMiAbuela
If you liked the movie, try watching the first episodes of the anime. If after that it's not your thing then thats okay too.
DaveGrohlsBrokenLeg
Yeah I'm going to try it. I really like the premise of the film so if everyone is saying the anime is better then I really need to try
Deevanx
The series is way more a battle of wits between L and Light, and Light in particular is way, way better in the series. I recommend it!
FizzleBurger
I agree with your assessment that they should've changed enough to make this a separate story altogether. The last line of the manga (1/2)
FizzleBurger
was, "Thus concludes this story of the Death Note." THIS story. So make another story, one that isn't about Light and L. (2/2)
pres2pond
The original Japanese live-action adaptation is better than this schlock and arguably better than the anime and manga itself for how it ends

Don't forget about Ghost in the shell.

ChloePrice
I knew it was going to be trash when I saw it was a mishmash. You either stay faithful to the source or make a new story out of it. Not both
dobbythehouseelf
I'm planning on watching it with my old roommate while drinking and complaining how bad it was.
kccoig14
I enjoyed it, BUT, I haven't read/watched the original. What made it so bad to the people who have read/seen the original? Just curious...
kccoig14
because everyone's opinion who knows the source material says it trash.
hentaiprincessluvsimgur
It's because the original was such a masterpiece. Like it was so popular and even the anime held true to the original manga so...
hentaiprincessluvsimgur
...this was just a watered down version of the story. And it left out what made it compelling and memorable in the first place
ImKimJongUnAndEverythingIsFine
Watered down is putting it mildly.
JayPapy
For me the film suffers as they're trying to compress 11ish hours of story into 90 mins so the pace and subtlety goes to the wayside.
ImKimJongUnAndEverythingIsFine
They turned a masterful battle of wits into a high school drama, long story short.
imposingelephant
THANK YOU! dafoe was great but I was wtf the rest of it.
emealiowest
Anyone notice how Ryuk said that no one had been able to write more than 2 letters of his name down before he killed them? But 1/2
emealiowest
In the margin, it clearly says "Don't trust Ryuk."?? I mean... That's a name... 2/2
ImKimJongUnAndEverythingIsFine
It's almost like this movie is terrible and doesn't make sense 90% of the time.
FizzleBurger
He didnt ask Mia to join his murder spree "5 minutes after meeting her." Only 40 sec passed between "Im Mia" and "Do you really wanna know?"
ImKimJongUnAndEverythingIsFine
Sorry I got mixed up. It was 5 minutes after meeting her that they were banging each other after murdering someone.
FizzleBurger
Haha, A+ recovery. And solid review.
capnsebastian
Dude I'm a huge fan of both the anime and the manga and the anime, but I knew from the start they weren't trying to stay loyal to the source
capnsebastian
So I went in with low expectations and I had fun watching it. Americanizing it till it just became a black comedy.
Sheepyhead
I don't think people understand what "reinterpretation" means
Musoukadake
They do, but it was just bad.
Sheepyhead
It was bad, not because it was different from the source material, but because it was a terrible movie lol
Musoukadake
And that’s most of what they’re saying lol
Sheepyhead
Not back when I first posted that comment, back then it was mostly "DIFFERENT BAD" lol
MichelGoussu
And what about the anime ?
capnsebastian
and the manga and the anime and the manga and the anime and the manga and the anime and the manga and the anime and the manga and the anime
hentaiprincessluvsimgur
Watch the anime or read the manga.
MichelGoussu
It was a joke : the guy said and the manga twice.
hentaiprincessluvsimgur
lol definitely read it twice
Primaltiguere
It's really worth a watch. Only about 37 episodes.
MichelGoussu
It was a joke : the guy said and the manga twice.
Primaltiguere
Didn't he say anime twice
MichelGoussu
Yeah that's what I meant, now the joke is on me
aleister94
its okay to not be perfectly loyal what is not okay is to turn a philosophically fascinating battle of wits into a highschool drama 1/2
aleister94
2/2 romance slash gore porn bullshit
RawSuger
stopped watching when his first kill was some random teen not a criminal, the kid kinda an outcast not an elite.there was no moral ambiguity
aleister94
he was basically a school shooter
RawSuger
i couldnt fit that in the 140C but yes exactly!
monadi
I didn't know anything about Deathnote before watching it and I loved it. I'm thinking it was made for people like me, not true fans. Soz.
hentaiprincessluvsimgur
Yeah most likely an American audience that didn't have any real knowledge of it besides that it was some popular story
Gegenschein
But I was all ready for your rant! I even rescheduled some things. Now what am I gonna do for the next 45 minutes?
ImKimJongUnAndEverythingIsFine
I edited and have now ranted. I hope you can set aside the time to read it. Ty for your up its none the less <3
ImKimJongUnAndEverythingIsFine
*vote not its
BoyOhBoyHereIGoKillinAgain
You're already on the internet, you'll figure it out ;). What you do with the other 44 minutes will be the real decision

There was no potato chip scene. 0/10
TheMeofYesterday
its been almost 8 years since i even thought about death note and i can still hear the english VA... "and EAT IT!!!!" -music crescendo-
graffitimonkey
There was barely any of the intellectual battles. And L's plan to trick Kira get skimmed through as a passing thought :(
PorneliusHubertII
And light writing Watari's name and controlling him despite having never met him or writing his full name.
ImKimJongUnAndEverythingIsFine
Also minimal amounts of candy eating. Very disappointing.
BruunHero
Did Ryuk eat any apples though?
ZauzzieTheBeast
He wasted those apples!
ImKimJongUnAndEverythingIsFine
I'm fairly sure he ate two. Gotta pump those numbers up. Those are rookie numbers.
Fistdeepinapanda
The movie was absolute garbage but can we all agree willem defoe was brilliant in every way
pizzapartyhard
Oh that. I watched the trailer and it looked stupid, but Willem Dafoe intrigued me.
BlueDsc
Well, yeah that's a given, when I first heard about it my response was "Willem Dafoe will be the only good thing in this movie."
graffitimonkey
What was with Light's scream?! No one else think he sounded like a 7 year old girl? Broke the mood both times.
daverabbich
It wouldve been better if they'd given him actual ryuk to play and not this final destination puppet master role they seem to have given him
styvan
Just wish there was more of him
ImKimJongUnAndEverythingIsFine
Yes agreed. I didn't really like Ryok compared to the anime but Willam acted him well with what the scrip portrayed him as.
dhelsan
yeah but how hard it is to act "otherworldly being who likes apples"
OperationRustysBlanket
I keep scrolling past it. Really not worth a watch?
Golfbob
Honestly Death Note is my favorite anime. If you go into the movie expecting it to be 100% like the anime, it'll disappoint, but that 1/2
Golfbob
2/2 being said, as a stand alone movie, and a re-imagining of Death Note, it's honestly not that bad. Plus, Ryuk looks pretty cool.
Golfbob
Light is a whiny bitch tho. And Turner? Really?? But it's okay.
mattvsinternet
Never really watched the anime but I shut it off after 30m or less. Bad acting, bad script.
Porecomesis
I watched the anime. 'tis good. Never watched the movie and I don't care to.
Juicytoast
My gf watched the movie. I refuse to watch it. She never watched the anime, but now wants to.
Hdrbbz
That's really the only redeeming factor of this movie, the fact that it might get people to watch the anime.
ImKimJongUnAndEverythingIsFine
If you haven't seen the anime and don't mind a b movie, then it's not too bad. Willam Dafoe isn't in it enough to make up for the rest.
MetabolicFlame
Light's dumb as a rock and it's not very faithful to the anime. If you can get past that it's not too bad. It's a different take on the show
Polarbit
Light is mostly a whiney pussy the whole time and only does one maybe clever thing.
SexDrugsBirdsandRocknRoll
I've heard from imgurians that it's trash if you like the anime, but it's worth a watch if it's your first experience with it.
hotstuffburns
It's like any adaptation. Go into it not expecting anything. It's enjoyable, just not anything like it could've been.
SexDrugsBirdsandRocknRoll
And then watch the show
