Want a guide? If its "smart" expect it to give you the stupidest failures. If it needs wifi: don't let it in your house it is a security risk. If it requires an app: you are renting a machine as the app will stop being serviced and your machine will die whether it still works or not at that point.

Learning to maintain a washer and dryer, replacing worn parts yourself, is far more important than brand.
Notably, stay away from Samsung because they do not have service centers outside of Korea and Japan maybe, so parts are stupidly expensive and for some reason they also fail at basic engineering, leading to multiple failures.
Washing technique is also necessary, like using a bit of dish soap to clean dirty rags or work clothes before using laundry detergent, then bleach to remove stains

I have a top loading Kenmore washer that's over 20 yrs old. rebuilt it in 2020 when it had a leak. cost about $140 on the rebuild. replaced stuff that might leak. didn't want to risk having to take the thing apart again. So with amortization the repair has cost about 9 cents per load or less >> 6 years x 52 weeks x 5 loads/wk. The laundromats around here cost $2 per load at the time. probably higher now.

I bought an inexpensive maytag washer in '99 right out of grad school because that's what I could afford at the time, and it was "large capacity".
That bastard survived until 2025 when we did an interstate move, and went to a new home, and is probably still happily washing clothes with only the basic functions.
The place we moved to came with a fancy new washer, and it performs no better despite having a shit-ton of bells and whistles.

Our bare bones dryer stopped drying. Wife and daughter were complaining about needing to replace it. They got mad when my son says, "probably just need to lint out," because that obviously isn't the problem. We pull it out, clear a big lint clog from the exhaust, and the dryer works fine. Neither of them bothered to tell my son sorry, lol. We got to be smug for a few minutes, though.

They're generally pretty easy to fix. There's only a few components that go bad and those are often cheap to replace.

They count on you either buying the same brand or going ofF reviews. The problem is, all of the big brands have stopped providing quality. It's all flash and water savings.
Speed queen has been great but you can always find a local repair shop you trust and ask what they recommend. They will tell you what has expensive electronics, what's hard to get parts for, etc

I've yet to actually hear about any appliance from a reputable company that *requires* either an Internet connection or proprietary app to perform functions similar to a "dumb" appliance. And I just bought a full set of new appliances for my house last week. The one your grandma bought in 1972 that still works is just an example of survivorship bias, and uses triple the energy with half the capacity of anything modern.

Unfortunately youre describing the $2000 washing machine, the $2500 washing machine is the one with zero fancy features, real knobs, no touchscreen, and real metal parts for everything cuz its just a small commercial unit.
Just like how you can get a non-smart tv thatll last forever, but itll be $500 more for the same size WITH smart features, and will be 4x as thick and have not silent cooling fans cuz it was meant to be a menu screen at McDonalds or something not a TV.

Re: toilets. Plumber quoted me $800 per toilet plus labor, so I got $200 toilets from Lowe’s and installed them myself (I actually did have to get a male gym rat friend to help because toilets have to be picked up and placed down precisely right and I can’t accomplish that)

I have an ancient top loader whirlpool, one big knob for machine controls and a smaller one for water temps and a third for how full the water level you want ( with a secret reset feature)... Basically when it stops filling, you twist the knob to reset and it keeps filling untill you let go. Also if you keep the lid open, it will do the wash cycle and stop, you just reset the wash cycle, restart, close the lid and do a second wash cycle, no extra water. Basic, durable, simple and it works

Whether noise is a factor depends greatly on where the machine is located. In the US it's common to put them in basements or, in climates that don't freeze, in attached garages, where not as much noise gets into the living space. Sometimes in older homes you'll find the washing machine in an enlarged bathroom or, European style, under the kitchen counter, because the plumbing was already there. And increasingly there's a trend toward having them in the living space near the bedrooms.

If the noise issue could be mitigated it sure does make logistical sense having laundry upstairs between the bathroom and bedrooms where people keep and change their clothes mostly instead of schlepping it all over the house.

Speed Queen’s warranty is great until you actually try to use it. You are probably fine if you live in a city with authorized service nearby. A buddy of mine fought with them for about a year and eventually got paid only the depreciated value of the washer, even though he had used it only a handful of times. As I remember it, they calculated the depreciation through the end of the claim instead of from when he first reported the problem. I think he also had to sign a NDA to get paid out.

I got an LG washer/dryer a few years ago. No failures so far, but the controls are STUPID. Just one example, of many: for most of my clothes, I want a cold wash with an extra rinse cycle, otherwise normal. When I turn it on, the dial defaults to "Normal" cycle, and there are "Cold Wash" and "Extra Rinse" buttons on the right-side panel -- but they're disabled until I turn the dial at least a little (which doesn't actually move it off "Normal"...).
Why? Why would they limit it like this? Aargh!

I've had decent luck with my stacked LG front loaders with a few caveats. The built in delicate cycle on the washer always throws an error about inadequate water pressure, but I downloaded one and that one works fine. What I would REALLY like is a stack of all in one heat pump washer/dryer combos. Most of them are so efficient they run on 110 and no vent to clog up.

Get a basic dryer that has an easily replaceable heating element that costs little. Most of the time the heating element is what fails, and can be easy to replace. $25-$50 and 30 minutes of your time, good to go for a while

Unfortunately, Speed Queen is owned by Private Equity now, and suffered the same fate as everything else that PE touches - it turned to shit. The current products they produce are not good, nor are they reliable, nor are they easily repaired. I will second the comment about Samsung being crap, but LG is legit. At least these days.

Nah LGs are fine other than the washer/dryer all-in-one. Our first LG front loader lasted 18 years and would have gone longer if we replace the tub's "spider" when it started making noise at year 12. But we put it off until it destroyed the bearings 🤣 and replacing the bearings was like $400 in parts and lots of effort so we just got a new $800 LG washer. Same thing happened to my parents, their bearings died at year 17 because they didn't get the spider replaced either, and they got a new LG.

I've very good experience with the german brand Miele. Last one died after 25 years, I didnt want to repair it, wanted one with automatic detergent and more economical with power and water usage. My current one is 5 years old, never had a problem with it, it cost around 3 times of the cheaper options but is build to last.

I am sure speed Queen are amazing, but I've had an LG for 8 years now, and both the washer and the dryer work amazingly well. I used to have LG appliances in my kitchen and my previous home, and they were fabulous. I never had a problem with any of it.

Just here to reinforce the Samsung comment. Their shit doesn't last and repairs sometimes cost nearly as much as the unit. Imagine buying a microwave for 200 and then having a cheap latch piece break. Couldn't replace the piece, but instead have to replace the door for 130...straight to the trash.
Ive had decent dealings with LG, but maybe I just got lucky. I had to replace the motor on my LG washer once after 8 years of service. It was $184 usd for the part and the job was relatively easy.

It happened to a TON of people. If you read reviews on the unit a couple years later, there were several 1 star ratings specific to the latch breaking. If you aggregate that % rate of failure out to how many of they sold, it has to be thousands of units. Many of which would be occupying a land fill now.
Their quality control is either shit or nonexistent.
I wouldn't buy a bottle of water from Samsung if I was dehydrated in the desert. They'd probably bottle from nuclear coolant water.

My LG pair is 11.5 years old. It has an nfc smart communication feature for diagnostics/cycle downloads. But I only ever used it a couple times. The only issues I've had are a jammed drain pump impeller (got wound up with some crap, cleaned it out and good). Also, a hose on the tub came loose from vibrations (I guess), so I added a zip tie around the rubber part to hold it better.

I have a Samsung washer and dryer - last about 8 years before the dryer needed its' first repair, but repairs are easy, and non-OEM parts are cheap on Amazon and generally work about 3 years or so before I have to replace it again; the washer was about 12 years in before I needed to replace the drain pump, i'm guessing it last three more years before I need to replace it again.

I have experience with both brands and no issues. If you need a repair on any appliance and need a repairman it will require two trips and parts. Factor that in before repairing an old appliance. If you have an ancient refrigerator you are spending more in extra electricity cost than a new on would cost. It's a throw away world much of the time.

I ordered Speed Queen commercial machines, without the coin boxes. I went to the appliance repair company and asked what they have at home, that's what they all had. Big white boxes, no high efficiency, no Wifi alert when a load is done. They just wash clothes and will never break.

I can't see how an electric dryer could be "high efficiency", other than stopping when the clothes are dry. The PTC is near 100% efficient, just a matter of the getting the cycle to end earlier. There are some heat pump dryers but they can't get very hot so unsure how well those work. Anyway, I also wish to get a speed queen some day

From my understanding, heat pump dryers aren't so much meant to get hot as they are meant to condense the water out. Kind of like how dehumidifiers work. But I do believe some come with resistive heating, in case you want a faster dry sometimes.

I was lucky and inherited my parents speedqueens when they downsized. They were considered old when I got them. It's been 8 years since then and the only issue I've had with them is the buzzer on the drier stopped working. I fully expect them to both outlive me.

If you want to get the 7 year, you have to buy their flagship model which is around 3-4k for the set.
Not to mention they give you a lifetime warranty on the drums.

I’ve had both, I prefer a top loader. The front loader has a huge rubber gasket that got mildewy if the door was closed, so we would always have to keep the door open. It was a laundry closet along the side of a hallway, so the door was always sticking out in the hallway. Annoying. So after that we went back to top loader. More capacity too.

I adore our combined appliance. They're more common in the EU, but awesome. A laundry room becomes downright roomy when only one giant box goes in a space for two.
Granted, we hang dry nearly all but towels. Faaaaar less damage, less fading, & if you put the drying rack in sunlight it'll break down stains, lighten whites, & deodorize. And free.
It's at best a half-ass dryer, though. Takes at least 4 hours.
