Zoos don't do this. If you see them interacting with the wild animals this way, they are not accredited and probably not doing a good job of caring for the animals.
Small-clawed otters, like this fellow, are on the endangered list largely due to the illegal pet trade, motivated by social media 'influencers' exactly like this. I really wish Imgur would stop giving these people the attention they want, at the animals' expense.
I mean... Not to 'support' the illegal animal trade at all(I Think we should be hands off)... the animals that humanity has adopted as their companions have done ABSOLUTELY amazing as far as the survival and successes of their species. Even applies to those we use for food(Not really like they have a 'good' life though, so that is a diff argument) - But dogs and cats? Tremendously successful from an evolutionary standpoint. If we did adopt more animals as mainstream pets, we may actually HELP.
This is Chandler from Chandler's Wildlife. He owns a zoo. His otter will be used for educational purposes and eventually maybe even conservation. He has a YouTube channel and a bunch of venomous snakes
Then he should really know better than to post a video like this that makes them look like awesome, adorable pets. It's only going to help increase demand for them.
Look man. You're trying to have your cake and eat it too. If you want people to be interested in conserving different species, they have to see them, they have to feel a connection to them. How do you do that without making people go to a zoo or go on a safari? You make a video and upload it to tik tok or YouTube, the two largest easily reachable audiences on the planet.
It's a compromise. Life isn't all black and white.
I've seen tons of videos from conservationists that stress that while the animals are very cute, they aren't easy to care for and do not make good pets, and that it's harmful for the animal to do so. It's not difficult.
Better safe than sorry. We literally don't need to see otter footage with people to live our lives. Don't give them attention. If you want to see otters watch nature shows and visit/support rescues.

I do get tired of the experts spouting out about how someone is doing the wrong thing. This could very much be equal to the dog with cropped ears. He could work for a zoo or rescue and is saving this little ones life. But no, immediately a bad guy that has it as a pet.
I think the core of the comment is not to attack the person. As you said, we don't have the context. But the way stuff like these is show will make other people want one of these as pets (the OP wanting it or not), thus stimulating more illegal pet trade.
I mean, at some point, people are responsible for their own actions. I couldn't even count the number of animals the internet has made me want. All the way from cut little weasel to great big giant elephant. But I know it is best if I stick to the ones domesticated. Even then, I realize certain dog breeds are not for me. You need to think about pets before you get one. If you can't do that, a pet probably isn't for you anyway.
