WHAT A PITY
snuzzbobble
You can apply for a certificate of exemption for a dog that's a banned breed. Have to keep it muzzled in public and get special insurance.
Also I think it's worth noting that most of the main animal and dog organisations in the UK campaign against the blanket ban of certain
breeds as it doesn't take into account temperament of the individual and also implies that other dogs are inherently safe.
cptunderpants
There are no bad breeds, only bad owners.
threeblackkittens
Or good owners who unfortunately have a naturally aggressive dog and struggle to manage it as best as they can knly to get comments like 1/
this one hurled at them calling them bad owners because their dog is aggressive. 2/2. (Also **only, whoops.)
dexterousgek
Seems like an awesome dog, but that doesn't mean certain breeds aren't more aggressive than others.

As a pit bull owner, this makes me so sad. My girl is harmless. I could be getting stabbes and she would just look at me with her dumb face
katsrulz
**stabbies** omg laughing so hard
I was terrified of them until I started fostering. Each and every dog is different. Don't get size a dog you can't handle.
ThePyroknight
This band on specific breeds is ridiculous. it is not the breed that causes a dog to be aggressive. it is aggressive because of the way 1/2
You train or treat the dog. so if you train your dog to be violent or overprotective then yes it will be aggressive same if you treat 1/2
the dog like crap or if the dog was abused before you adopted the dog. No dog is ever born violent EVER.
MadeOfSteel
That makes me sad and angry. I would never move to a place I wouldn't be able to bring my pit. She is one of my kids
Hadespuppy
Me too. I can't even bring him home with me for a visit because they're banned in my old city.
She is my daughter's best friend
draughtvader
I cannot stand the stigma against pits. The people who abuse pitbulls into killers are the ones who should be banned from this planet
What about the dogs who are born aggressive and have never been abused? Because they do exist. And good owners struggle to work on them 1/
but are judged harshly by strangers because "it's not the dog, it's how it's raised" which isn't actually a true statement.
here2laugh
He should move and take his money that'll show them
trippingthelightfantastic
GravitySmellsLikeCheese
I see videos of playful lions and tigers, awww they are so beautiful. An animal that is capable of easily killing is not OK in urban situ
XplodingUnicornGlitter
So... All dogs should be banned then?
I'm a dog owner, but a large breed dog that can crush a child's head is not applicable for an urban environment
tomalt
That's a Staffy bull in my opinion. Staffordshire bull. Like the place in the UK. Jesus "authorities" need to learn their fucking dog types
The worst any Staffy I've ever met has done is bump into me too hard because they're giant goofballs. They love people.
Individualsocksinthewashingmachine
It's identified as a pit bull by the foster home ie: a vet. So it will say on the dogs paperwork it's a pitbull. Normally paperwork>opinion
Reading some of the American Kennel club I didn't realise they consider the Staffy so close to 'pit bulls' as I know them.
Should have mentioned I'm in Australia and this is what we call Staffy's. Pit Bulls to us are only the American Bull Terrier really.
Staffies and pitbulls are two different breeds, identified as such around the world.
That's including the America and the UK

QuackQuackAttack
I had a border collie as a kid. It would run circles around the kids and "herd" us. Not trained, just instinct. What is a pit's instinct?
A border collie is a breed with genetic coding. "A pit" is a descriptive word, not a breed. What we call "pittbull" is a mutt w a big head.
createduser
American pitbull terrier: https://www.ukcdogs.com/american-pit-bull-terrier
https://www.today.com/pets/what-pit-bull-it-s-not-actually-dog-breed-t118066
American pitbull terrier is included in the description of "pit bull" but they aren't the only breed in that description.
They were originally bred as nanny dogs. Fuck face assholes use them for fighting which is where their unjust stigma comes from.
MissAizea
The nanny dog is a fallacy, they were used for bull baiting/hunting
Okay so then it's humans fault. Circling back to animals respond to the way they are treated. But yeah, let's entirely blame the animal.
Munchman347
I want a pet Alligator! 'You can't have one, they are inherently dangerous', Oh sure, blame the animal!...
I don't blame the breed, they were never really human aggressive, just dog aggressive. I like pitbulls, but like any powerful breed, 1/2
They need a responsible owner and training. Though, my dad didn't train his, and he was gentle with everything regardless 2/2
That said. Dobermans were specifically bred to be efficient at killing people (long jaw and shaped to go for throat). But they shouldn't 1/2
Be banned either. I love both those breeds and a lot of the aggression has/is being bred out completely. 2/2
Which actually kind of sucks in some ways because Dobermans are becoming very shaky now. Makes them bad for protection sports.
xXxHulaHamsterxXx
I'm in the UK and the legislation is they take the dog and do multiple tests to see if it can be a social creature (walk with dogs, have 1/1
Ransoms jog by etc) and if they pass they can go back to the owner but have to have a muzzle when out on a walk. Unfortunately as people 2/3
Say if they did suddenly snap there isn't really a way you can stop them and they can do a lot of damage if they did go. Thats the sad part
SgtMjAlex
And then keep them in a 1x1 cage for 3 years before having them killed.
RobertNAdams
Goodness, what a nanny state the UK has become.
Dravit
I love dogs but I support the ban on pit-bulls here. They can be unpredictable and extremely dangerous.
The problem is that if they decide to go postal, they're nearly impossible to stop and at best will do serious damage - at worst; kill
Bustee27
I thought in the U.K. You could register them to live here
Yeah you can apply for a certificate of exemption
TwinkleTeal
Yes! https://www.gov.uk/control-dog-public/banned-dogs
ButteryCommissar
He tried and researched, and found there was no 100% safe option for Ginger. He really looked into it.
You have to have them speyed , tattooed and neutered and have them muzzled at all times. You only register them if the police take them.
soulfuldog
Not tattooed, but microchipped. Which is now true of all dogs in the UK since 2016
They are illegal. If Patrick brought the dog in, the police would take it, and he would have to prove it harmless and appeal. They could say
No and destroy ginger, or say yes, and return the dog at his expense for neutering and court costs
tozemarreco
tattooed?!?! wtf brits?!?!

It's basically the same as chipping.

Question is if it is a race/breed thing or per individual.

If you're not a citizen or permanent resident, you can visit and live in the USA for a few months, but you cannot stay longer.
I'm aware of this. But it's a relatively simple task to apply and become a citizen. Especially if you're a millionaire celebrity.
Simple but not quick. The line to get a green card (if you don't get a business-sponsored visa) is something like 10 years long.
upending his life to try to become a major businessman is a worthy trade for a dog.
As far as I am aware, the millionaire exception is for people who plan to invest in a US business. That could be an option, though I doubt »
transientarchitect
I have noticed personally that pitts can be very sweet but they’re also are more prone to aggressive temperaments if not handled correctly.
JoshJitsu
They strongly pack bond and don't always react well to 'outsiders'.
In which case the ban isn’t assuming all pitts are bad, but instead assumes that most people don’t have the training to handle these animals
LarryFine
Fair enough, and probably true.
They may be more prone to aggression, but the real problem is if they get aggressive they can easily kill an adult human, moreso a child.
Most dogs can easily kill an adult human, moreso a child, if they get aggressive.
Fair enough, but for whatever reason many people are afraid of pits. Sad but true. Maybe due to dog fighters and other bad owners.
So are Chiuauas and Yorkies, even more so. Should they be banned too?
Chihuahuas and yorkies cannot physically do the same catastrophic damage that a bully breed inflicts.
You can punt a small dog, not so much with a pitbull.
TayTay051
I'm sorry, but If a chihuahua or Yorkie gets aggressive it's a lot less likely to kill you. Its a more manageable situation than with a pit
No, as much as I would love to never hear that godawful yipping ever again in my life...
Chihuahas and Yorkies don't attract lowlife thug owners and dog fighters. Sadly, American Pit Bull Terriers do.
That doesn't mean those little dogs don't attack people.
It means they don't kill people. If a little dog attacks me, I'll just step on it.
Uberdude100
Every pit ive met is so ridiculously full of love. I love them. Its such a fucking shame they have such a stigma against them
itsmejetzt
What you say is true. Yet my bulldog got attacked out of nowhere by a pit bull with owners . He almost died. It was traumatic to watch
Merwini
Pits will do anything for their family. Unfortunately, this means that shitty people can turn them into monsters.
gubbstrut
Was a breeder in my town, a lady that seemed to be in her late 40s. She walked 5 of those dogs without any problem. Happy and friendly.
"But can't you see?! It's an ASSAULT DOG!!"
"Assault-STYLE" dog, thank you very much.
koreanegg
I know not all pitbulls are bad but when I was 11 one attacked me and a friend on our bikes when we rode by and there was no fence/leash. :(
nipplepanties
it's also partly the overmixing of dogs with pit genes. Becomes a problem too
jasonddgs
It's such a shit storm when it comes to people's opinion about pitbulls
Mockingbirb
They're often abused and trained to fight, and shitty people use dogs as a weapon, London had a problem there I heard. The dogs aren't bad.
it's an attempt to stamp out dog fights in the uk and it's not all pitbulls just purebred pitbull terriers
AngurProne
When I was 18th I met a co-worker who had two pitbulls I reacted the way most do. He had me come visit his dogs my opinion changed.
Also if you ask Animal Control Officers the only dogs they are afraid of are Chows.
RuneFang
It’s not the breed but the people that raise the individual animal we have one and is absolutely nothing but a complete love bug.
outdoorswithjess
Generally, they, and staffys, absolutely love and will protect their family/owners. usually aggressive to other dogs/people they dont know
UpvoteFairy3001
I was attacked by a pit when I was 12. I still love pits. Doesn't say anything about the breed. It says everything about the owners though.
Cosmogonic
see, with ex-fighting breeds, it's the same problem as a gun. there's a good reason why guns are banned. bad owners.
Guns cannot escape from their backyard and kill an elderly person.
Sep 22 2017
FernandoRumdebum
Yeah same, dude came out and beat it over the head with a hockey stick.
svenmack
I don't think the stigma lies with the dog but with the irresponsible charvas who overbreed them and use them as fighting dogs.
SimmaSinger
First time I’ve ever seen “Charva” on imgur. Upvote for ye like.
none of this southern chav business
They WERE bred originally to be fighting dogs. Whatever your opinion of them now, that's an inescapable fact.
**"Pitbulls" today aren't even really descendants. It's not even a breed, it's a description with no genetic ties to bull baiting dogs.**:)
AltHorrorPunk
I've got one. She's the cuddliest, most loving dog I've ever known. She's the biggest scaredy cat as well.
saaaaaaaame!
ExTechOp
It's a bit like BMW's and Audis: it's not the car/dog itself that is a problem, but the irresponsible owners who really shouldn't have one.
furriephillips
The cause is the lowlife "humans" that used this breed as a dog-fighting and/or an attack dog, to intimidate people & resulting tragedies.
LoudBirb
How about instead of banning specific breeds, we just make those breeds' owners directly responsible for their dog's actions. Motivate...
... people to properly train their dog by having them charged with assault and battery with a weapon if the dog bites someone. If you're...
... not willing to take at least that level of responsibility for the dog's sake, then get a different dog.
Promethianfire
My friend has one and she's super sweet with people, but wants to murder every other dog she sees.
fuckingtnuc
I made sure that didn't happen with my frenchie pit. Doggie daycare as soon as she had her vaccinations

DuckyofDeath123
So does my South Caucasian sheepdog. As does my sister's German Shepard, and my friend's Labradoodle. That's not breed-specific.

SuburbanCommando
They're very instinctively protective of the ones they love. That said, my parents had two dachshunds. WAY more aggressive than other dogs.
subatomicmom
My pit is afraid of my in-laws' dauschand because he's aggressive.
Yeah, they're aggressive little shits, but the bond they form with their master is pretty respectable.
Daddyfinger
That's every pit I meet. So sweet but first to go after another dog.
My yorkie is like that too.
0_o unfortunate about the latter
killernerd
then your friend is a bad dog owner and part of the problem.

It really comes down to training.. Like any breed.
iampandahearmeroar
And a fuckton of socialization, which typically goes hand and hand with training
demonic
My friend had a border collie anytime I'd knock at his door the dog wanted to murder me but after going inside he turned into a big baby 1/?
In short all breeds are good dogs, pitbullls are the best tho imo. 2/2
DTomUSAF
That's bad socialization with the dog at a young age... that can be fixed very easily and isn't just a pit related thing.
famousoverdose
Is it really an easy fix? Would love to know how!
dothedu
Meaning that it's not a problem if you socialize your dog when they're young. Fixing them after the fact probably isn't easy
LegacyMuse
My mom's pit used to be super sweet with other dogs until he got attacked by another dog. Now he's super protective of her.

mully19
Had a Doberman... amazing baby. My mom has a yorkie/wants mix who bit the neighbours infant.... who the dog belong to is key.
Wants * yorkie/Satan mix sorry by bad
IProvideFakeContext
They do tend to be slightly more aggressive with other dogs by nature, but heres the thing. they are so fucking EASY to train to have no
problem with those dogs. They are incredibly eager to please, meaning that training them is an absolute breeze. My uncle has a pibble who is
dumber than a box of rocks, but she is the sweetest thing. After my own dog, of course.
I would not call prey drey "so fucking easy" to train. Prey aggression one of the harder things to deal with, and you never completely 1/
Get rid of it, you just manage it and avoid dangerous situations to prevent aggression. 2/2
Correction, easy to train out if you start from a puppy. Early socialization is key in this, but I guess most people adopt gorwn up dogs.
SomeoneStoleMyNameLol
It's a shame they kept ripping people's faces off
All big dogs have this capability. Pitbull type dogs are just way more prevalent and asshats that want to look tough don't train them.
Before I get crucified I understand it's the owners fault if dogs are aggressive
Or genetics. No good owner can fix bad genetics in a poorly bred aggressive dog.
With the case of pit bulls it's uneducated people fear mongering. They are super easy to train, loyal, and sweet to all people.
But... No. Not really. They were uilt to be strong for the purpose of fighting so they can do more damage than other dogs. They were also 1/
Fawksy
Exactly, Different breeds react to abuse differently. All dogs can be good, Not all dogs will rip off a face...
About 80% of the pits I've met have been absolutely fucking lethal weapons. They're banned for that reason, people in the UK were using 1/
Don't be a smarmy cunt.
What the fuck are you talking about ? It was a real problem in UK, and a law was brought in to curb it.
@ashgrave's reply was https://i.gyazo.com/b2177963b4b1ec29303f6795bb29a88d.png. Stand by your words if you're gonna be a prick
2/ them as literal weapons and it got really bad. I grew up in a rough area, there weren't any nice pibbles. You seen em, you ran.
Fuuuuhhhhck. That's really fucking unfortunate :/
Aye it sucked. They then moved to staffies, which royally pisses me off because pits do tend to be aggressive dogs naturally, but staffies >
2/ aren't so quick to it and the coaxing used isn't nice. Assholes will always use dogs as weapons in some form or another, it's a shame
Tokimeki
My ex-friend used to own two. She didn't give them a lot of attention, kept on chains outside in dirt, dirty water bowls, etc. 1/2
I couldn't even get near one of them without them trying to jump on me and bite. He would fight his chain at every person besides the friend
So owners really do matter
memepolice420
I think the love and general rambunctiousness of them is a concern for people
Yep, my 65lb pit will run at you full speed just to get to you quicker then stop on a dime so you can pet her. Full wiggle butt.
SexyVaginalDilator
yeah, because they just came with the ban out of the blue, right?
What v
I get that. My pit doesn't realize she's pure muscle. So I keep her away from small humans, she knocks them down just trying to lick them
AVeryTinyGyrados
They were often fighting dogs which, as you can imagine, made them violent.
Dennarro
They are not born violent, only forced to act that way by shitty people. But any dog will do that if you abuse it enough.
That is false. They were specifically bred for aggression. Yes, they can be raised well, but only if you don't ignore that fact.
Well thats kind of what I meant.
DoubleNubbin
But they are powerful, which is really the concern. A violent chihuaha is probably not going to kill. A violent pit is a bit more serious.
I understand that, but a put bull is not the only bully breed that's like that.
TroelsyTwo
Maybe it's cos of what they were bred for? Specifically to be dangerous. Not every pit is good. When you have a bad one it's extra bad.
ContactFrunt
You sure about that, jack
Out of here with your ignorant shit.
It's not ignorant, it's genetics. Just like retrievers retrieve, herding dogs herd, and pointers point. Pits are genetically inclined to 1/
dog aggression. They were bred to be physically built for killing too, which makes them more dangerous than other breeds.
Like, 50% of dog breeds were bred to kill things in various ways.
But not for dog aggression.
3Hamswillkillhim
Your progenitors were bread to be mammoth hunters, does that mean I can't trust you around my elephant?
I wouldn't trust any human around my elephant!
CaptnMurica88
Valid question
ZimGenzko
Looking at what we're doing to elephants probably not.
If you have an elephant I'm coming over
A bad dog is a bad dog. Its slightly akin to blaming races of people for individuals actions. Id say blame the training or lack of.
A bad dog is a bad dog. Yes. But a little rat dog isn't life threatening when it's bad. A pit is.
Emkat6114
I have a pit and work with a local pit bull advocacy group and I still share your sentiment.
Ill admit, solid point. But, i still dont think its worth the stigma or breed specific legislation. Liability is on the owner. My 2 cents
TheBroble
Other dogs are just as dangerous but don't get the same stigma. People are more prejudiced against pits.
No. If anything (especially on imgur) pits gets a free fucking pass, whereas other breeds won't. One guy on here had a rescue pit attack /1
danceswithdogs
That is true for any dog breed. What a stupid thing to say...
ThePiedPiperofRuination
Except maybe chihuahuas. Who knows why those things were bred?
Chihuahuas are actually the only native dog species in the Americas. Efficient rodent hunters that we, ironically, inbred unto rodents
CC2332
Bred as a food source for the aztecs if memory serves me
yourCleverUsername10
But not as many other breeds were specifically bred for fighting. It's like how humans have almost always enslaved each other, but the most
I'm seeing a worrying trend actually. That cos of the pit rep people will make extra excuses for a bad pit than if it was any other breed.
recent occurrence is the most well known.
Ehh rubbish. I’ve met some pretty mean dogs and none which were a breed bred for fighting.
Nucas
my cousin lived with her sister and her sister's pitbull about 10 years ago. it mauled her face. she still have the inkvine scar.
saxomophone
Here's some other anecdotal evidence: I was bit by a Cocker Spaniel
so that's great and everything but the stigma exists for a reason and statistics are hard to ignore.
Least get your facts straight.
justarandomfandom
Should we ban all dogs because of that? What about smaller dogs like those little shaky rat demons, they're usually pretty nasty too.
Statistics state that smaller breed dogs I. E Chiuauas are more prone to attack people. If you're going to state something like this, at
ShadyVermin
The statistics are also inaccurate. My dog is a border Collie duck Toller mix, and you would not believe now many ignorant people just (1)
Well I'm not sure about that, the pitbulls that have killed people were pitbulls. I don't recall there being dubiety about the breed
Assumed she was a pitbull. The number of attacks that get reported as "pit bull" is largely skewed by people who can't identify a breed (2)
So they assume it's the one the media made them fear. (3)
OKay but what was the situation around the attack? How well was the dog trained? How was it cared for? Any dog can attack a person.
Any dog can attack a person, yet it's most often Pit Bulls who do. You can argue about reasons all day, but that will remain true.
Those statistics are based on reporting. People report wtf they want when it comes to dog bites. Someone probably isn't going to report (1/2
MyVoice
Sauce? "Truths" will have research to back it up. I've heard golden do b/c more ppl have them as pets so they're around more ppl. Truth?
NoBeardTheIrate
And? My friend had a small terrier that tore a chunk off a neighbourhood kid. My grandma had a poodle who bit through my dad's thumb. 1/2
My sister was attacked by a husky. It's a large dog problem, not a pittbull problem. Thank you for realizing that!
My pit doesn't even bark. My hound, however, once tackled a woman, pulled her pants down, and bit her ass. She swung on me, but still...
Any dog can bite. Any dog can be aggressive. It's people who raise them without knowing how to see and react to the signs that are a problem
We could talk about Dobermans, Rottie's, even Great Danes too. Big dogs that can really hurt you. But we only target pits. Just asking why?
Any dog can bite. A few breeds can kill you when they do. Poodles and terriers are not gonna rip your arm off.
If a linebacker raped someone, you're not gunno persecute everyone who's 6'3" and 230lbs. I always emphasize good training.

Me too. I can't even bring him home with me for a visit because they're banned in my old city.
MadeOfSteel
She is my daughter's best friend
draughtvader
I cannot stand the stigma against pits. The people who abuse pitbulls into killers are the ones who should be banned from this planet
threeblackkittens
What about the dogs who are born aggressive and have never been abused? Because they do exist. And good owners struggle to work on them 1/
threeblackkittens
but are judged harshly by strangers because "it's not the dog, it's how it's raised" which isn't actually a true statement.
GravitySmellsLikeCheese
I'm a dog owner, but a large breed dog that can crush a child's head is not applicable for an urban environment
tomalt
That's a Staffy bull in my opinion. Staffordshire bull. Like the place in the UK. Jesus "authorities" need to learn their fucking dog types
tomalt
The worst any Staffy I've ever met has done is bump into me too hard because they're giant goofballs. They love people.
Individualsocksinthewashingmachine
It's identified as a pit bull by the foster home ie: a vet. So it will say on the dogs paperwork it's a pitbull. Normally paperwork>opinion
tomalt
Reading some of the American Kennel club I didn't realise they consider the Staffy so close to 'pit bulls' as I know them.
tomalt
Should have mentioned I'm in Australia and this is what we call Staffy's. Pit Bulls to us are only the American Bull Terrier really.
Individualsocksinthewashingmachine
Staffies and pitbulls are two different breeds, identified as such around the world.
Individualsocksinthewashingmachine
That's including the America and the UK

America is outside the EU, though.

Ah, the one thing I don't have an account for!
QuackQuackAttack
I had a border collie as a kid. It would run circles around the kids and "herd" us. Not trained, just instinct. What is a pit's instinct?
katsrulz
A border collie is a breed with genetic coding. "A pit" is a descriptive word, not a breed. What we call "pittbull" is a mutt w a big head.
createduser
American pitbull terrier: https://www.ukcdogs.com/american-pit-bull-terrier
katsrulz
https://www.today.com/pets/what-pit-bull-it-s-not-actually-dog-breed-t118066
katsrulz
American pitbull terrier is included in the description of "pit bull" but they aren't the only breed in that description.
XplodingUnicornGlitter
They were originally bred as nanny dogs. Fuck face assholes use them for fighting which is where their unjust stigma comes from.
MissAizea
The nanny dog is a fallacy, they were used for bull baiting/hunting
XplodingUnicornGlitter
Okay so then it's humans fault. Circling back to animals respond to the way they are treated. But yeah, let's entirely blame the animal.
Munchman347
I want a pet Alligator! 'You can't have one, they are inherently dangerous', Oh sure, blame the animal!...
MissAizea
I don't blame the breed, they were never really human aggressive, just dog aggressive. I like pitbulls, but like any powerful breed, 1/2
MissAizea
They need a responsible owner and training. Though, my dad didn't train his, and he was gentle with everything regardless 2/2
MissAizea
That said. Dobermans were specifically bred to be efficient at killing people (long jaw and shaped to go for throat). But they shouldn't 1/2
MissAizea
Be banned either. I love both those breeds and a lot of the aggression has/is being bred out completely. 2/2
threeblackkittens
Which actually kind of sucks in some ways because Dobermans are becoming very shaky now. Makes them bad for protection sports.
xXxHulaHamsterxXx
I'm in the UK and the legislation is they take the dog and do multiple tests to see if it can be a social creature (walk with dogs, have 1/1
xXxHulaHamsterxXx
Ransoms jog by etc) and if they pass they can go back to the owner but have to have a muzzle when out on a walk. Unfortunately as people 2/3
xXxHulaHamsterxXx
Say if they did suddenly snap there isn't really a way you can stop them and they can do a lot of damage if they did go. Thats the sad part
SgtMjAlex
And then keep them in a 1x1 cage for 3 years before having them killed.
RobertNAdams
Goodness, what a nanny state the UK has become.
Dravit
I love dogs but I support the ban on pit-bulls here. They can be unpredictable and extremely dangerous.
Dravit
The problem is that if they decide to go postal, they're nearly impossible to stop and at best will do serious damage - at worst; kill
Bustee27
I thought in the U.K. You could register them to live here
snuzzbobble
Yeah you can apply for a certificate of exemption
TwinkleTeal
Yes! https://www.gov.uk/control-dog-public/banned-dogs
ButteryCommissar
He tried and researched, and found there was no 100% safe option for Ginger. He really looked into it.
oynsy
You have to have them speyed , tattooed and neutered and have them muzzled at all times. You only register them if the police take them.
soulfuldog
Not tattooed, but microchipped. Which is now true of all dogs in the UK since 2016
oynsy
They are illegal. If Patrick brought the dog in, the police would take it, and he would have to prove it harmless and appeal. They could say
oynsy
No and destroy ginger, or say yes, and return the dog at his expense for neutering and court costs
tozemarreco
tattooed?!?! wtf brits?!?!
plentyofrabbits
It's basically the same as chipping.
vince086
Like a small one on the ear, it's for an identification code.
wilburx
Still though, its a dog, not cattle
asmallcat
Lol, why does that matter? It's OK for cows, not for dogs?

you can, you have to keep it muzzled in public but as long as you can prove the dogs safe i.e. never bitten anyone. and a special insurance

Ummmm STAY IN THE STATES!!!!
Corrodias
You can't just decide to live in a country. Immigration has rules.
Archeantus
This is going to trigger someone.
hardstuffdontgothroughwalls
If he already lives in the states and has to leave the pup behind, why not just stay here? THATs What's best for the doggie!!!
Corrodias
If you're not a citizen or permanent resident, you can visit and live in the USA for a few months, but you cannot stay longer.
hardstuffdontgothroughwalls
I'm aware of this. But it's a relatively simple task to apply and become a citizen. Especially if you're a millionaire celebrity.
Corrodias
Simple but not quick. The line to get a green card (if you don't get a business-sponsored visa) is something like 10 years long.
Corrodias
upending his life to try to become a major businessman is a worthy trade for a dog.
Corrodias
As far as I am aware, the millionaire exception is for people who plan to invest in a US business. That could be an option, though I doubt »
transientarchitect
I have noticed personally that pitts can be very sweet but they’re also are more prone to aggressive temperaments if not handled correctly.
JoshJitsu
They strongly pack bond and don't always react well to 'outsiders'.
transientarchitect
In which case the ban isn’t assuming all pitts are bad, but instead assumes that most people don’t have the training to handle these animals
LarryFine
Fair enough, and probably true.
LarryFine
They may be more prone to aggression, but the real problem is if they get aggressive they can easily kill an adult human, moreso a child.
plentyofrabbits
Most dogs can easily kill an adult human, moreso a child, if they get aggressive.
LarryFine
Fair enough, but for whatever reason many people are afraid of pits. Sad but true. Maybe due to dog fighters and other bad owners.
XplodingUnicornGlitter
So are Chiuauas and Yorkies, even more so. Should they be banned too?
createduser
Chihuahuas and yorkies cannot physically do the same catastrophic damage that a bully breed inflicts.
createduser
You can punt a small dog, not so much with a pitbull.
TayTay051
I'm sorry, but If a chihuahua or Yorkie gets aggressive it's a lot less likely to kill you. Its a more manageable situation than with a pit
RobertNAdams
No, as much as I would love to never hear that godawful yipping ever again in my life...
LarryFine
Chihuahas and Yorkies don't attract lowlife thug owners and dog fighters. Sadly, American Pit Bull Terriers do.
XplodingUnicornGlitter
That doesn't mean those little dogs don't attack people.
LarryFine
Mavgurian
"But can't you see?! It's an ASSAULT DOG!!"
SeeShark
"Assault-STYLE" dog, thank you very much.
koreanegg
I know not all pitbulls are bad but when I was 11 one attacked me and a friend on our bikes when we rode by and there was no fence/leash. :(
nipplepanties
it's also partly the overmixing of dogs with pit genes. Becomes a problem too
jasonddgs
It's such a shit storm when it comes to people's opinion about pitbulls
Mockingbirb
They're often abused and trained to fight, and shitty people use dogs as a weapon, London had a problem there I heard. The dogs aren't bad.
lordshipgryphon
it's an attempt to stamp out dog fights in the uk and it's not all pitbulls just purebred pitbull terriers
AngurProne
When I was 18th I met a co-worker who had two pitbulls I reacted the way most do. He had me come visit his dogs my opinion changed.
AngurProne
Also if you ask Animal Control Officers the only dogs they are afraid of are Chows.
RuneFang
It’s not the breed but the people that raise the individual animal we have one and is absolutely nothing but a complete love bug.
outdoorswithjess
Generally, they, and staffys, absolutely love and will protect their family/owners. usually aggressive to other dogs/people they dont know
UpvoteFairy3001
I was attacked by a pit when I was 12. I still love pits. Doesn't say anything about the breed. It says everything about the owners though.
Cosmogonic
see, with ex-fighting breeds, it's the same problem as a gun. there's a good reason why guns are banned. bad owners.

I don't think the stigma lies with the dog but with the irresponsible charvas who overbreed them and use them as fighting dogs.

none of this southern chav business
SeeShark
They WERE bred originally to be fighting dogs. Whatever your opinion of them now, that's an inescapable fact.

katsrulz
saaaaaaaame!
Motivate...
LoudBirb
... people to properly train their dog by having them charged with assault and battery with a weapon if the dog bites someone. If you're...
LoudBirb
... not willing to take at least that level of responsibility for the dog's sake, then get a different dog.
Promethianfire
My friend has one and she's super sweet with people, but wants to murder every other dog she sees.
fuckingtnuc
I made sure that didn't happen with my frenchie pit. Doggie daycare as soon as she had her vaccinations

I have a pit and he's super sweet with the rest of my dogs and the animals in the neighborhood. But he's a big baby so
CuppyCakesaplenty

DuckyofDeath123
So does my South Caucasian sheepdog. As does my sister's German Shepard, and my friend's Labradoodle. That's not breed-specific.
katsrulz
Thank you.
SuburbanCommando
They're very instinctively protective of the ones they love. That said, my parents had two dachshunds. WAY more aggressive than other dogs.
subatomicmom
My pit is afraid of my in-laws' dauschand because he's aggressive.
SuburbanCommando
Yeah, they're aggressive little shits, but the bond they form with their master is pretty respectable.
Daddyfinger
That's every pit I meet. So sweet but first to go after another dog.
katsrulz
My yorkie is like that too.
Uberdude100
0_o unfortunate about the latter
killernerd
then your friend is a bad dog owner and part of the problem.

It really comes down to training.. Like any breed.
iampandahearmeroar
And a fuckton of socialization, which typically goes hand and hand with training
demonic
My friend had a border collie anytime I'd knock at his door the dog wanted to murder me but after going inside he turned into a big baby 1/?
demonic
In short all breeds are good dogs, pitbullls are the best tho imo. 2/2
DTomUSAF
That's bad socialization with the dog at a young age... that can be fixed very easily and isn't just a pit related thing.
famousoverdose
Is it really an easy fix? Would love to know how!
dothedu
Meaning that it's not a problem if you socialize your dog when they're young. Fixing them after the fact probably isn't easy
LegacyMuse
My mom's pit used to be super sweet with other dogs until he got attacked by another dog. Now he's super protective of her.

I would not call prey drey "so fucking easy" to train. Prey aggression one of the harder things to deal with, and you never completely 1/
threeblackkittens
Get rid of it, you just manage it and avoid dangerous situations to prevent aggression. 2/2
IProvideFakeContext
Correction, easy to train out if you start from a puppy. Early socialization is key in this, but I guess most people adopt gorwn up dogs.
SomeoneStoleMyNameLol
It's a shame they kept ripping people's faces off
katsrulz
All big dogs have this capability. Pitbull type dogs are just way more prevalent and asshats that want to look tough don't train them.
SomeoneStoleMyNameLol
Before I get crucified I understand it's the owners fault if dogs are aggressive
threeblackkittens
Or genetics. No good owner can fix bad genetics in a poorly bred aggressive dog.
ashgrave
With the case of pit bulls it's uneducated people fear mongering. They are super easy to train, loyal, and sweet to all people.
threeblackkittens
But... No. Not really. They were uilt to be strong for the purpose of fighting so they can do more damage than other dogs. They were also 1/

Uberdude100
Fuuuuhhhhck. That's really fucking unfortunate :/
FernandoRumdebum
Aye it sucked. They then moved to staffies, which royally pisses me off because pits do tend to be aggressive dogs naturally, but staffies >
FernandoRumdebum
2/ aren't so quick to it and the coaxing used isn't nice. Assholes will always use dogs as weapons in some form or another, it's a shame

My ex-friend used to own two. She didn't give them a lot of attention, kept on chains outside in dirt, dirty water bowls, etc. 1/2

SeeShark
That is false. They were specifically bred for aggression. Yes, they can be raised well, but only if you don't ignore that fact.
AVeryTinyGyrados
Well thats kind of what I meant.
DoubleNubbin
But they are powerful, which is really the concern. A violent chihuaha is probably not going to kill. A violent pit is a bit more serious.
Dennarro
I understand that, but a put bull is not the only bully breed that's like that.
TroelsyTwo
Maybe it's cos of what they were bred for? Specifically to be dangerous. Not every pit is good. When you have a bad one it's extra bad.
ContactFrunt
You sure about that, jack
XplodingUnicornGlitter
Out of here with your ignorant shit.
threeblackkittens
It's not ignorant, it's genetics. Just like retrievers retrieve, herding dogs herd, and pointers point. Pits are genetically inclined to 1/
threeblackkittens
dog aggression. They were bred to be physically built for killing too, which makes them more dangerous than other breeds.
ShamnusMcfee
Like, 50% of dog breeds were bred to kill things in various ways.
TroelsyTwo
But not for dog aggression.
3Hamswillkillhim
Your progenitors were bread to be mammoth hunters, does that mean I can't trust you around my elephant?

Looking at what we're doing to elephants probably not.
Individualsocksinthewashingmachine
If you have an elephant I'm coming over
Uberdude100
A bad dog is a bad dog. Its slightly akin to blaming races of people for individuals actions. Id say blame the training or lack of.
TroelsyTwo
A bad dog is a bad dog. Yes. But a little rat dog isn't life threatening when it's bad. A pit is.
Emkat6114
I have a pit and work with a local pit bull advocacy group and I still share your sentiment.
Uberdude100
Ill admit, solid point. But, i still dont think its worth the stigma or breed specific legislation. Liability is on the owner. My 2 cents
TheBroble
Other dogs are just as dangerous but don't get the same stigma. People are more prejudiced against pits.
TroelsyTwo

The statistics are also inaccurate. My dog is a border Collie duck Toller mix, and you would not believe now many ignorant people just (1)

OKay but what was the situation around the attack? How well was the dog trained? How was it cared for? Any dog can attack a person.

Any dog can attack a person, yet it's most often Pit Bulls who do. You can argue about reasons all day, but that will remain true.
