The thing is it's not very durable which is why you shouldn't touch them. The Ashmolean in Oxford, UK has a demonstration of this.

Use a drying medium if you want to work faster with oils, some paintings can take years to completely cure.

i can attest to this, i made my own impasto medium once with sawdust and mixed it in with some linseed oil and spirits into oil paint, 1/

Oil paints don't really "dry", there's no solvent used, its the oil polymerizing into a plastic-like solid, which takes time.
