Hopefully this will give those people trying to make changes in their life a different perspective on how to go about doing it!

I disagree. You need a balance, that approach can make you forget why you're even doing it

Ehhh motivation and discipline aren't mutually exclusive. Discipline without motivation is an empty, mirthless existence.

Iv been trying to figure out how to put this in words for a while now

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"force yourself to-" SURE SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING YOU NEED MOTIVATION FOR TO ME GUYS

10 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

This person does not understand what motivation is.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I do my job cuz i hate. Bees

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I rack diciprin

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I would use the word "habit". If practicing every day is just something that you do, like brushing your teeth, you don't even think about it

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I use a little bit of both. Motivation to start something new, then discipline for when you want to binge Arrested Development.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks. This helps. But I'm gonna go back to Imgur anyway though

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fuck dicipline! SPITE is the answer! FInd a spiteful reason to work out, train or work and you will NEVER lack for the will for it!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We talkin bout practice man

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The answer is simple- motivation now comes in a bottle. It's called adderall.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ugh, I needed this. Getting up to go for a run

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is awesome. Currently struggling with motivation at my job.

"Do not strike while the iron is hot. Make the iron hot by striking."

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Okay okay I'll do it! Geeze.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It a sure way to greatness, but it would kill all the love I had for the subject. Without that, what is it really worth?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Just my 2 cents, but maybe after you've gotten good at your passion, you can look back and see how far you've gone with discipline (1/2)

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

and you could confidently say to yourself "Damn, I still love what I'm doing but now am fucking great at it!" (2/2)

Or create a white hot hatred that fuels you

As a musician who struggles with the motivation to practice, thank you for the new take on practicing.

I started piano grades with a view to go do a Masters. I do it in hopes I can leave my factory job.

What's your career goal?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ideally to be involved in something that makes me and other people happy. I loved working in live music. 1

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Watching it all come together and being a part of that made me happy.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Aspiring OUtdoor leadership, theater, acting college student. I want to make music so badly, but I can only have so many majors. Good luck

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Best of luck, it will be a rewarding journey

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Soooo I don't have to be motivated to do a Lord of the rings and hobbit marathon. I just have to do it. *cue shia*

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I needed this. I've been having motivation issues as of late with school...

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So. . . how?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

handy for me, i always lose something half way through what's it called.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

+1 since I needed to read this. Thanks for reposting it!

All of us violinists are angry inside. That's what drives the discipline. Anger at that fucking flat and the finicky little sharp after.

10 years ago | Likes 231 Dislikes 2

A fucking men

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I feel you

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

O god yes, and I'm not even a professional violinist. Fuck those nasty sudden sharps and squeaks

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And those of us who aren't angry enough become violists.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Occasionally cellists, those are the primarily sad ones.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well said

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"That's my secret. I'm always angry."

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That discipline of not throwing it against the wall.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

That's why percussionists are usually angry, they can throw sticks if they want.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Force yourself to do things. You know. Motivation.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

I mean motivation seems like more of a "want to do" thing.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But what's my motivation for disiplining myself?

10 years ago | Likes 66 Dislikes 2

Success.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Because you are a naughty little monkey and you deserve punishment.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Getting some ladies.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Shut the fuck up and just go and do it.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Shame.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Scratch out "motivation" and find a reason instead.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

self abuse

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is a terrible abuse of language. Motivation is a reason for doing something. Force of habit *is* a motivation. Motivation is not urge 1

10 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 4

alone, but that is perhaps the most compelling motivation to an undisciplined person. Happiness is perhaps the ultimate motive. 2

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

What about things that make you happy, but are extremely difficult and frustrating to get to that point. This advice is awesome. You can

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Motivation is not synonymous with impulse or urge. This advice uses language wrong in a potentially harmful way.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

There is irony in the reply serving as a rhetorical piece of motivation intended to change the questioner's behavior... 3

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

No, that's just how lazy people get to keep blaming lack of motivation for their short comings.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank you. I hate this quote. It's nothing but a person who's already motivated pretending they've found some secret to self-discipline.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

2... motivated all you you want, but discipline is what ultimately gets you to your goal.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Good advice - go for habit loops over motivation every time.

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

Habit loops are very under-rated. Feedback and adjust

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Trying so hard to develop habit loops. Stay in the moment, don't stress about the rest, just do the thing, adjust as needed. It's not easy.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But once you develop a new habit it is much easier to stay with it, and you feel weird when you aren't doing the thing daily.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's the goal! I have very little discipline as it turns out, so I stumble. A lot. But I get back up & keep working at it. I'll get there.
