Apparently I wasn’t prepared for therapy

Jul 15, 2019 2:23 AM

Been on imgur for several months and this is my first post.... I know a lot of people here says something like “expect this to die in user sub” or something like that, but honestly I’m hopping to receive some form of support, hopefully some encouraging stories of getting through hard times in dealing with past traumas.

Long story short I grew up with a borderline sociopathic mother who only wanted me around because she was receiving child support from my father, and I became aware of this somewhere around the age of 8/9. Because of child custody laws and practices I had to wait until I was 13/14 (can’t exactly remember) before I was able to live with my father full time, and even that process took about a year to complete.

Since then I have tried to maintain normal relationships with people but have always felt something was off in how I perceived my personal relationships. I finally started going to therapy earlier this year and it has unearthed so much more than I was prepared to deal with. It has forced me to re-examine and rethink the motivations for many of my habits and actions, and emotionally and mentally I feel so much worse than I did before starting therapy. For example I used to partake in self harm as a coping mechanism and while I haven’t done that in years I keep catching my thoughts gravitating towards engaging in that again.

I’m hoping that other people on imgur have experienced similar “setbacks” in their lives while trying to make positive changes.

TLDR; therapy has opened up a much larger can of worms than I ever imagined, hoping others can share positive stories of how therapy got them through dark times

Edit: wow, thank you everyone who has commented and messaged me with support. It has been helpful to hear similar stories. To everyone who messaged me: I wasn’t expecting so many messages and I will do my best to respond to them all!

I am so proud of you OP it gets darkest before dawn, the work you put in now will help you blossom soon, I know it's hard but you got this!

This is normal, but it’s only temporary. If you do the work, it will get better

On "talk" therapist #3. So many factors I can't find a professional able to put it into perspective. I understand where you're coming from

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Own your story. Trauma happens to everyone and you’re not alone. It’s good you’re getting help and reaching out. Keep it up!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Be gentle with yourself as much as possible. Every time you feel like self harming and you don't do it, that's a win, and you can be proud.

7 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

that's good advise

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In the same way you find bad feelings you never knew were there , you’ll be given amazing tools you never knew existed and they will help !

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Surgery is painful and bloody, but it can save your life.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

its like trying to bandaid something that needs more care. ripping it off is gross, but a start to the real healing.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Dude same! But I never got the choice to change custody and am still living with mother at the age of 22! Sorta twinning! <3

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Listen to me, it gets worse before it gets better. KEEP GOING!!!! Eventually you’ll have the tools to help you thru this, and future issues

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's not a set back you are processing all the emotions you pushed away back then It's hard work but you'll come out the other side better

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It sounds like you might be doing PE. It gets worse before it gets better. If it helps, know that others have walked this road, cheering you

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Like everyone said, it gets worse before it gets better, but make sure to let your therapist know it’s getting worse, they can help you cope

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was feeling the same way you were feeling as far as “things getting worse after therapy” my EAP sessions are not enough and I’m broke. =(

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Some therapists have programs for lower income patients, such as a sliding scale or free therapy. It's worth looking into, good luck!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you. I will look into it. =)

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You're taking such a valuable step by asking for help on here. Talking with others who've gone thru it is so helpful. You're doing amazing!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hey, you're taking steps towards wholeness, and that is HUGE! Have you told your therapist about this? Being overwhelmed isn't productive.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And they should be willing to hear that and adjust the pace/plan for you so that it can be a positive and productive experience.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I would love to listen and share my own experiences with you, please do not hesitate to reach out. You do not have to go this alone.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I’m sorry you had to go through this. Everyone’s trauma is unique, but once you hear everyone else’s story, strangely familiar. You’ll 1)

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

2) feel alone in your pain, but once you realize that you aren’t, slowly but surely it will get better

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

One of my friends is going through the exact same and having more frequent PTSD flashbacks. Its tough, but we can all get thru it together!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Have a calming activity lined up for after. I used to get tea after.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Pets can be wonderful for therapy. I have a cat, and when I'm feeling down, I'll go over and pet her. Does wonders.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My experience has been that you have to do the work if you want to heal the wounds. Tough but worth it.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's work. I did counseling grad school, but I'm on SSDI for my PTSD. Been on both sides & it's exponentially more draining on the client...

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

You're gonna know you for the rest of your life, best to get know & love yourself well. Good luck fighting that good fight. Stay safe.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You have to open a can of worms to eat it mate. And once it's empty, you'll be able to work on the problems that are at the bottom.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

These are cliches but it’s down before it’s up. Your past isn’t your fault. It fuckin sux but I promit will get better. Write it all down.

Sometimes, something is repeated so much because there is a grain of truth.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*promise

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The hard part for me was the acceptance of becoming a different person on the other side, it's like starting from scratch. 1/2

7 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

such a good point, you're going to change if it works and that's a good thing!

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You made the effort to resolve things by going to a therapist, don't let yourself give up after you've made it this far.

7 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Yes.. I had this too. Dealing with the fact that trauma was such a big part of my internal identity and then losing that was weird but good

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Lurking my ass thru as usual. Whichever form of therapy you are undergoing I hope you find it helps you- there are many ways to approach

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

the horrible things we experience in life. Most comments here confirm you’ll feel more hurt as therapy progresses or something like that

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don’t agree that you have to re live or break through all last bullshit before it gets better. Look into a book called Trauma Stewardship

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

& an approach used by Dr Peter Levine. There’s good stuff there! And pls find a good therapist, counselor to help you. Ur on the right path

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Taking a break is okay. Enjoy your food. Have some wine. Do nothing. Get a tattoo. Go have an abundance of safe sex.

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Funny that you mention that; cooking has always been one of my main coping mechanisms, I already have a couple of tattoos, and well my

7 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

girlfriend was the person who encourage my seeking out therapeutic help. I’ll let her know the Internet advises an abundance of safe sex

7 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

The point is there are plenty of normal things that people forget to do when processing emotions. It doesn’t have to be grim the entire time

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

It honestly sounds like things are going well for you, way better than they are for me atleast. Good luck on your journey.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

she will appreciate that

My SO is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist for the VA. She's super proud of you. She always warns her pts that it gets worse as you...

Is it a good idea to find a new therapist, I made mine cry and now feel like I broke her?

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yes! I have had three therapists in the last two years. First 1 was great, but didn't seem to recognize when needed move to the next topi1/3

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

2nd therapist was terrible. I have a nervous tick of picking at skin, and she googled skin disorders to show me puss covered faces. 2/3

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Really rubbed me the wrong way. 3rd therapist is great!! feeling better and staying better! 3/3 keep at it @OP ! And change it up if needed!

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You gotta through hell to get to heaven sometimes, you'll pull through. It's a process of uncovering and facing what has been there.

7 years ago | Likes 62 Dislikes 1

If you find yourself in hell, keep walking. You might get out before the devil knows you're there.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I mean if you believe in either then thats objectively false. You go to one or the other the rules are pretty set in stone.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I was talking about hardships, the "hell" in which they bring and going through them gets you to "heaven" so to speak.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was just trying to make a 10 commandments pun. Get it? Set in stone.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's a process, trust the therapist knows what they're doing and follow the plan.

7 years ago | Likes 259 Dislikes 1

Or they'll 5150 your ass and you'll be basically earmarked as a felon for the rest of your life

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 9

If you got 5150’d then the therapist probably saved a life. Either yours or a person you might have grievously harmed.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You don't understand how easy it is to be 5150d then

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*And* Tell your therapist about these new feelings because you know that you need guidance on better coping mechanisms. Good luck!

7 years ago | Likes 84 Dislikes 1

Very important. I don’t mean to be a downer but to promote awareness here- I just spent a terrifying evening with a friend that had this /1

7 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

similar reaction to trauma therapy and just dropped out because it was too intense- and then became suicidal. I was able to keep it cool, /2

7 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

luckily, and she got to the help she needed, hopefully- but this is not the sort of can of worms u want to open and then leave sitting out.

7 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

further evidence, including letter to Supreme Court. http://www.themediareport.com/hot-topics/repressed-memory-debunked/

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

You are right about those kind of “repressed memories”, not sure that’s what OP meant. They prob meant avoidance of an uncomfortable past

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

In an age where people in anti-vaxxing, I believe it prudent to err on the side of caution. I hope OP gets the best possible care.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd strongly suggest OP reach out to a bona fide therapist with verifiable qualifications - the Samaritans would offer better advice.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

It doesn’t say OP is recovering memories. It says OP is having to confront unhealthy coping mechanisms and delve into why they react and 1

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Interact certain ways. Please be more careful when bringing this argument up. 2

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I have heard from a lot of people that with therapy, it gets worse before it gets better—like rebreaking a bone that set wrong. Keep on!

7 years ago | Likes 655 Dislikes 3

Therapy puts to bed all the "unfinished business" emotions from the past that persist in the present. It's an exhausting purge, mind & body.

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

This. But the it gets better part is SOOOO much better @OP. You’re doing great.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Therapy is hard work and an unimaginably painful process in these instances. If this isn’t happening, get a new therapist.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And yes, there is therapists that might not work as inteded with every person. If therapy is working, you'll get eventually feeling better

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I agree on that. Got my own experiences in regards of therapy and first everything seems to break but that’s okay because it will get better

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

THIS. You are very brave and stronger than you know. Weak people don’t allow themselves to be vulnerable, sucks now but it WILL get better!

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Or that could mean his therapist is poorly doing his job.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 7

It genuinely depends what kind of therapy or approach they are using. Most treatment packages encourage the building of coping methods 1/2

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2/2 before treatment begins. This allows for an alternative or replacement behaviour to be emitted instead of the historically displayed one

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have no doubts about that. Thing is, Abusives Therapists exist.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fun fact, going on anti-depressants can actually heighten your risk of suicide. It can give energy to a lot of people but not immediately /2

7 years ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 6

Just so everyone is aware, this is only true for individuals who are starting a brand new anti-depressant and are b/w the ages of 18-24. (1)

7 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 2

User name checks out!

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If you aren't in that age group, you don't have an increased risk of suicide when started on a new anti-depressant. Also, while it causes(2)

7 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 1

an increased risk of suicide in the very beginning of use, the overall reduction of suicide far outweighs the increased risk of suicide (3)

7 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 1

in these patients b/c the alternative is letting your depression continue to spiral out of control which almost definitely leads to (4)

7 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

Improve their life. So they have further capability to self harm but not other benefits. Those kick in, but there is a danger period. 2/2

7 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 7

Looking back, I wasn’t nearly clear enough here, so I should mention that the rewards of seeking help and receiving medication far, far 3/4

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Outweighs the risks. As others have said, it also only affects a few patients groups and meds saved my life. Please seek help if you need it

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

While I appreciate the "fun" fact, I gotta downvote this for people who will be dissuaded by this from seeking help. Talk to professionals.

7 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Ah, apologies. I’m on medication myself and am very happy to be so. I thought I worded it in a more optimistic light, but looking back, 1/2

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I really should have been explicit in how much good medication can do for your life. My apologies for giving off very false insinuations.2/2

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was on antidepressants for 6 years since the age of 12, these worsened my condition and made me like a zombie. Psychiatrist was hellbent /

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Man, that sucks. I count my blessings my doctor is reluctant to add meds or increase dosage.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

that i take them religiously. i lack much personality now and feel very out of place, not sure what to do with being non-zombie.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Have a hard time trusting doctors now too lol. Feel like that was way too young to pump 350mg of zoloft into a kid

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That does seem pretty young, but the zombifying effect can give your brain a break from anxiety enough to repair itself so that when you go
