i work at a .gov acronym agency that designs and builds robots. our bipedal walking robot has a safety cage, safety cables attached to the ceiling in case it falls, and a tech whose job is to be ready to smash the big red E-stop button. not to mention all the power and data cables suspended above it. we are a long long way from a self-contained humanoid robot that can navigate a dynamic environment full of people and be trusted to not fuck shit up.
.....Uhhhh I think you have that backwards, you can fuck all the robots you like (get permission from the assembly line foreman first), but a real person has to say yes first.
Yeah, an actual robot would move with unnaturally synchronized moves, rather than moving only one joint at a time. More like a low quality 3D animation.
Actually... you just reminded me, many modern biped robots use machine learning, and they're just kinda creepily natural in their movements, like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tF4DML7FIWk. But some others just take many small steps constantly, like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYFfn8bBUek
Very interesting, thank you a lot!! I guess the second one keeps taking small steps because he seems to fall over whenever he stops. The first one is quite fascinating, but it seems like it traces a human who'd walked this track previously. I wonder how it would do in a foreign environment. It can stand on its own tho! That also reminds me of these yellow dogs from Boston Dynamics (Spot) and those new ones that have additional wheels on the ends of their four legs and move like a Metroid Emmi.
Please don't use outdated bigoted ableist terms. I know people say that those terms don't hurt people, but I worked with folks who understand what that term means and understand that it applies to them. Whether you mean it to or not. That word is hurtful. I know it used to be used, but it really hasn't been used anymore. Please consider updating your vocabulary. Thank you for your time and consideration.
A cheat method is to be in a room where the air is very still. I've gone 5 min without blinking during a staring contest, but 91 minutes is very very impressive (and probably super bad for your eyes)
Not only not blinking— more impressive to me, is that she didn’t move her irises.
Not even one millimeter.
Imagine not flicking your eyes to the side, or up or down, not even a little tiny bit on accident, while looking at things. Never getting distracted. Always locking your eyes in the precise same exact position.
Would have to be an extremely shit robot to only be able to move one axis at a time. Imagine the lack of precision and wasted movement she demonstrates in a production environment.
Oh yeah, it's a good performance. And acting like an actual robot would be boring, some of them even blink because we perceive not blinking as weird and humanoid robots are being designed to look *not weird*

24 seconds and not a single blink of the eyes. My eyeballs feel as dry as shriveled raisins thinking about it. That's dedication.

Holy shit, I just assumed it was an actual machine. Even knowing that, it looks like some kind of mask or suit or something. Downright creepy.
wheredoisign
I think it is a mask on her face
BaklavaWearingBalaclavaWhilePlayingBalalaikaOnBlackLava
I've gone as far as 31 minutes without blinking. World record is 91 minutes. 24 seconds is nothing if you practice
AimingForAdorkable
Just curious— don’t your eyes dry out?
And isn’t it miserable? Like not scratching an itch?
JustAnotherRabidToaster

Yeah. Dude it’s probably so bad for their eyes.
Also bad if they’re doing it regularly/frequently to practice.

Oh yeah, it's a good performance. And acting like an actual robot would be boring, some of them even blink because we perceive not blinking as weird and humanoid robots are being designed to look *not weird*
